2. Technology
2.1. What brought about the change from HTTP (Thin client)?
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-1085
DESCRIPTION:
Since ADOC N@vigator v3.0 version, HTTP is used.
SOLUTION 1:
ADOC N@vigator V3 is using Java Web Start technology.
Java web start application are called "smart client".
Client-Server applications of the market are thin, smart or heavy clients.
• With heavy client, you must install manually the client application version on each PC, it required disk for install and most of the time
a good performance client PC. All PC clients must be deployed with the new client version in the same time when a new server
version is installed.
• Thin client is using an internet browser on the client PC like Internet Explorer. It could required a small applet download on the first
connection. The application is deeply linked to the browser, with associated limitation, it required most of the time a small
performance client PC and a good performance server machine.
• Smart client are still considered as a thin client, it requires on each client PC a JRE1.6 (Java runtime environment) and an applet is
downloaded on the first connection, larger than thin client one, and then, the application is running on the "Java" environment on
each client PC. No more internet browser are required and the client is easily portable on any client PC platform, there is also larger
client capability than inside Internet Explorer. It requires a middle or good performance client PC and a good performance server
machine.
• The main advantage of Java Web Start application is the easy deployment: PC clients download automatically new version of
products when required, no need of software distribution, no need of manual install, no need of administrative rights, downloaded
software is digitally signed to avoid hacking and software is executed on a safe area of the client PC (non sensitive PC resources are
used).
The mode of communication between client and server will be HTTP and HTTPS
For information, the first versions of ADOC N@vigator V3 still need Internet explorer on each client PC but only due to usage of Active X
plug-in (Microsoft Active X technology could be activated only on Internet Explorer browser), this limitation will disappear with
replacement of Active X plug-in by new independent plug-in.
Java applets are stored in the user profile (ex. C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application
Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache) this location is included in the users roaming profile. This can mean that on every login to the network
a minimum of 20MB is downloaded on the network for every user.
In addition, there is a quota limit for user profile and once the quota is reached most applications stops working.
Finally, Java cache size and location is managed on the control panel. Airlines can adapt them with their policy. Applet is downloaded
only if necessary (change on the server).
Please note that Airbus is always using the latest version of AirN@v.
For previous version information on JRE compatibility, please refer to the navigator-install-manual.pdf file delivered with the installation
under Chapter 7.4: Software configuration required.
Furthermore, thanks to the java web start technology; there is no more any interaction on the individual desktop between AirN@v and the
other PC software like Internet Browser, other plug-ins... the client software is run on a "sand-box".
So, Citrix deployment will no more ease the administration process.
Currently, Airbus does not support AirN@v on Citrix environment if the issue raised is not reproducible outside Citrix.
also advise if there is a plan to cater for S1000D in any future version of ADOC?
SOLUTION 1:
ADOC N@vigator V3 is fully compliant with any ATA or S1000D data. V3 can handle any data if the associated parameterization is
developed. Developing a V3 parameterization requires test data and presentation specification; it is developed by Airbus for Airbus data
and by a third company for non-Airbus data like Boeing. 787 ADOC N@vigator v3 parameterization can be developed upon request.
3. Install
3.1. How to install AirN@v v3?
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-2534
DESCRIPTION:
How do we proceed to install ADOC N@vigator v3 and AirN@v v3 publications?
SOLUTION 1:
To help you install ADOC N@vigator v3 and AirN@v v3 publications, a C@DETS module for training purpose is available on AirbusWorld
portal. The module is named "AirN@v V3 Installation" or accessible from the link : C@DETS Link
Finally, note that a complete documentation can be found on the DVD provided by Airbus under the path: [DVD_Drive]\doc
This documentation is also available in the installation path as: [Install_Path]\Airnav\doc
SOLUTION 1:
You can install publication on any location. We recommend you to put all your publications in a dedicated folder for easier administration,
and to use the "Manage repositories" function which allows you to set a specific repository, or severals, in which you will your publications
that will automatically be referenced by AirN@v (See below screenshot).
or
A missing license
In case of multiple JRE installed on the computer, the application allows to choose the path of the JRE to use. By default, the installer
uses the JAVA_HOME environment variable.
If a 64 bits JRE is installed, the "CompressedOops" mode will be checked by default. This option is used to improve overall performances
by compressing some data in memory.
3.17. Why the AirN@v v3 installation does not detect AirN@v v2 for upgrade?
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-2600
DESCRIPTION:
When installing AirN@v v3 on a computer/server with an already installed AirN@v v2, the install does not propose to upgrade the
AirN@v v2 version. Why the AirN@v v3 installation does not detect AirN@v v2 for upgrade?
CAUSE 1:
AirN@v v3 is a new version of the AirN@v application and therefore there is no upgrade possibility from v2 to v3.
SOLUTION 1:
As AirN@v v3 is a new application, you will have a phase during which you will need to keep both AirN@v v2 and AirN@v v3 application
installed either on your computer or on your server.
Note that you can have both AirN@v application on the same computer/server or on different computer/server depending on your needs.
To have more information about the roadmap of the migration from v2 to v3, please refer to the AirN@v v3 roadmap FAQ.
In AirN@v V2, we can copy and restore several files and folders and the configuration remains consistent.
SOLUTION:
With AirN@v v3, you have specific XML files which gather the options set in the administration console. Therefore, the backuping of the
files will depend on what modifications you have performed and what needs to be kept.
If you would like to keep as much information as you had done with AirN@v v2, below is the list of files which can be kept to what end:
- Publications Path: The file to backup to not configure again the Publications path where the publications are stored is the
server-settings.xml file under [Install]\Airnav\system-datas\server-config
- Users created: The file to backup to keep the users created is the users.xml file under [Install]\Airnav\system-datas\server-config
- Group/Roles created: The file to backup to not configure again the groups (in standard mode) or role (in loose mode) is the
server-settings.xml file under [Install]\Airnav\system-datas\server-config
- Licenses: The licenses provided on the DVD are stored in [Publication_path]\licenses
- Certificates: The certificates provided on the DVD are stored in [Install]\Airnav\system-datas\server-config\identifiers
- Home page customization: The Home page can be customized with the file home-page-extras.xml found under
[Install]\Airnav\system-datas\server-config\ which should then be kept
Please note that, during the uninstallation of the application, a backup folder with all configuration files will be kept in order to retrieve the
previous configuration with a new installation. This backup folder is available in the installation folder: [Install]\Backup
4. Administration
4.1. V2 and V3 Link
4.1.1. Interface compatibility
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-1412
DESCRIPTION:
Will the system prompt for 2 icons on each desktop (one on v2 server and one on v3) for launching the application?
Will there be 2 URL/icons on client side as well?
SOLUTION 1:
As AirN@v v2 and AirN@v v3 are 2 separate applications, if a user needs to access AirN@v / Associated Data v3, he will need to use
a separate icon or URL to connect to the application from the V2 link he already has.
Furthermore, be aware that if you plan to install AirN@v v2 and AirN@v v3 on the same server, you have to choose 2 different port
values for each application or conflicts will arise that will prevent you from using one application or the other.
4.1.2. Configuration
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-2508
DESCRIPTION:
How do we proceed to enable the link between AirN@v v2 application and AirN@v v3 application?
SOLUTION 1:
To enable the v2 to v3 link, you will have to make sure that you have installed the AirN@v v2.8.1 version at least, then apply the
below proceudre:
1. Open the config.properties file under [installation_folder]/ANav/conf and edit the following lines:
a) ActivateAWN3Link=false
to ActivateAWN3Link=true
b) AWN3Link32compliant=false
to AWN3Link32compliant=true
2. Under [installation_folder]/ANav/conf/extcom, edit the AWN3.properties:
Change the line AWN3.interopUrlServer=https://w3.airbus.com/awn-server/consult-client to your server URL. Make sure to keep the
awn-server/consult-client part.
3. Afterwards, stop and start ADOC N@vigator v2 for the changes to be taken into account and try an interbase link (for instance:
Maintenance AMM/IPC => Associated Data CML/SM).
SOLUTION :
To be able to export and import correct document, we advice to unzip the exported ZIP file and re-zip it with 7-zip tool.
4.7. TR management
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-2152
DESCRIPTION:
How will the TRs be managed for standalone installations? Up to now it was possible with simple file synchronization. Will this be
retained?
SOLUTION:
The TRs installation for standalone mode will be the same than for server mode through the "Publication update" menu in the
Administration menu.
This option works the same way it was working previously with AirN@v v2 as described below:
• The TRs are delivered in PDF format
• The TRs are packaged in a zip file
• The zip file contains the relevant anchoring file used by AirN@v to attach the TR to the publication
The publications can be stored in one repository. They will be available on both servers.
If you attach a document to a publication, this information will be synchronized to the second server.
Regarding the implementation of the load-balancing, this part of installation is not managed by AirN@v. Each company has to manage
itself the load balancing. On Airbus World, we use two others tools:
• Apache with a reverse proxy server. This tool allows to use the load balancing. You will find more information on Apache site. This
tool is free.
• Microsoft DNS: this tool allows to link one server name to their IP address. With this tool, we can enter the name of the server directly
and not the IP address.
All relevant information can be found in the navigator-install-manual.pdf file available in the doc folder of the DVD.
Increase the logs size and the number of logs files will allow to save a larger number of information.
The process is the following:
• Quit the ADOC N@vigator server
• Go to the ADOC N@vigator instance installed
• Then, go to [ADOC N@vigator]\Airnav\tools
• Open the file log4j.properties
• Update the value of the line log4j.appender.RollFileApp.MaxFileSize to increase the size of the log
• Update the value of the line log4j.appender.RollFileApp.MaxBackupIndex to increase the number of logs files
• Save the updates
• Start the ADOC N@vigator server
If you update the file log4j.properties with the example here below, you will get 200 logs files of 5000 KB at most:
log4j.appender.RollFileApp.MaxFileSize=5000KB
log4j.appender.RollFileApp.MaxBackupIndex=200
CAUSE 1:
The folder is either in read-only mode or the computer account used to access to the folder does not have write access to the folder.
AirN@v requires to be able to write information in the files of the publication to be able to display it.
SOLUTION 1:
Verify that the publication folder is not in Read-only mode and that the computer account used to perform the administration action in
AirN@v has sufficient rights to write files in the publication.
DESCRIPTION:
In AirN@v V2, we could attach one attachment in various anchor locations but in AirN@v V3, we can only attach one attachment at one
anchor location.
INFORMATION:
A limitation in AirN@v V3 does not allow attaching one attachment to several anchor location.
This improvement is under analyze by our development team.
As workaround, you need to add the attachment to each anchor location.
5. Authentication
5.1. Connection methods
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-2148
DESCRIPTION:
Does every user of v3 need to have their individual user-id and password? This was not the case with v2?
SOLUTION 1:
With AirN@v V3, you have 3 connection methods.
• LOOSE MODE: you define different ROLE with associated rights: users are automatically logged with their windows login and IP and
they must select a ROLE (with the associated password, could be blank). Any user can connect and access to the define ROLE. This
is the default mode requiring a very limited administration. It is highly recommended to choose this mode as it is easy to implement,
easy to maintain with all the advantages of user tracking/logging and rights/access management.
• USER MODE: you define one by one each user, belonging to one group. This mode requires a consequent administration.
• SSO MODE: you can connect AirN@v to your corporate LDAP. This mode requires a specific development from the company.
Note that you may retrieve information related to the connection method also in the AirN@v v3 WebEx presentations which are available
on AirbusWorld portal under the "Maintenance & Engineering Community > Documentation Centre > Get M&E Support > AirN@v V3 and
New CML" page.
CAUSE 1:
The link used to access to the server was not the direct link to the application but to the "Launch client assistant" used to launch AirN@v
with specific options. The "Launch client assistant" is accessible from the link http://[server]:[port]/awn-server/
SOLUTION 1:
To access to the AirN@v publications from this screen you can either click on the "Start Client" button or go to the direct URL:
http://[server]:[port]/awn-server/consult-client
6. Human-Machine Interface
6.1. V2 and V3 Link
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-2153
DESCRIPTION:
Do links work between V2 and V3 databases?
SOLUTION 1:
All needed links from AirN@v v2 databases to AirN@v v3 publications are or will be implemented to ensure non disruptive service.
Details on how to configure and v2=>v3 link are found in the V2 and V3 Link - Configuration FAQ.
The file "pub-choice-header.html" mentioned by default is available under the path [Install_Path]\Airnav\webapp\jws-client\res
The result will be shown in the below screen:
6.6. Error messages when consulting with an old ADOC N@vigator version
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-3239
DESCRIPTION:
When we try to consult and AirN@v publication with a version of ADOC N@vigator older than the one available in the DVD received, a lot
of error messages come up.
CAUSE:
AirN@v publications are produced for specific versions of ADOC N@vigator, and old versions may be no more compatible with the
publication.
SOLUTION:
When receiving an AirN@v DVD from Airbus, please make sure that you are using at least the version available in the DVD of ADOC
N@vigator to be able to display correctly the publication on your computer/server.
7. Performance
7.1. Initialisation is too slow
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-1437
DESCRIPTION:
Compared to the v2 version, initialisation is too slow in v3.
SOLUTION 1:
ADOC N@vigator v3 software is using more memory than v2. On our benchmark, on a PC with 2 GB of RAM, the initialization takes
roughly the same time than v2. On PC with less than 2 GB, the initialization is slower, we are working on that point for next release.
Another reason could explain this feeling: during the first connection, ADOC N@vigator is downloading the full client software on the PC,
it allows easy deployment (nothing to install on client PC at each ADOC N@vigator version), so ADOC N@vigator v3 install is faster than
v2, but it requires the downloading of 20 MB of software on the first start.
SOLUTION 1:
20 MB are downloaded on cache on the first connection and only if necessary (means that if local cache files are up to date, no download
is performed)
8. Training
8.1. User Training - Interface change
FAQ Reference: #AIRNAV_V3-1444
DESCRIPTION:
Total change in interface might require re-training of users.
SOLUTION 1:
The presentation of ADOC N@vigator V3 is now available on the AirbusWorld portal. In addition, C@dets has been updated with V3
features. C@dets is a training application which is available on the AirbusWorld portal. You can access to the module named "AirN@v V3
general introduction" in AirbusWorld from the link : C@DETS Link
