INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP

ON

TECHNIQUES FOR BAT TAXONOMY, ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION


13th – 17th January 2020

A i m : To impart new techniques for identification, ecology, statistics, phylogenetics, and conservation of bats.

W h o c a n a t t e n d : Research students, teachers, scientists affiliated to Research Organizations, Universities


and Colleges in India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, and persons belonging to
non-academic institutions documenting bats and interested to learn more to help better their understanding about bats.

W h a t w i l l y o u l e a r n : Taxonomy of bats: Morphometrics, identification techniques, capture, handling,


collection, preservation; Bat acoustics: Use of acoustics for bat identification, call analysis, GSM and GPS tracking, and
monitoring bats, their activities and their population; Biostatistics: Introduction to R and how to speak R, data
analysis, and application of R in conservation; GIS, SDM and mapping: Introduction to GIS, mapping and
Species Distribution Modelling, use of QGIS and Maxent for SDM; Phylogenetics: Overview of DNA isolation techniques,
use of DNA markers, basics of phylogenetic analysis from MEGA to BEAST, and data interpretation; Conservation:
Global change biology, ethical practices, IUCN RedList process and conservation management plans.

R e s o u r c e p e r s o n s : Prof. Gareth Jones, University of Bristol, UK; Dr. C. Srinivasulu, Osmania University,
India; Dr. Matt Zeale, University of Bristol, UK; Dr. Bhargavi Srinivasulu, Osmania University, India; along with a few
young bat researchers [Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Osmania University; Ms. Lia Gilmour, University of Bristol; Mr. Aditya,
BRaConS].

W o r k s h o p f e e : Rs. 5,000/- (Indian research scholars); Rs. 8,000/- (Indian faculty/scientists); Rs. 8,000/- (Indians of non-
academic organizations documenting bats), and Rs. 10,000/- (for International participants). Workshop fee will
cover food, accommodation, field visit, and workshop kit.

T r a v e l : Participants have to make their own arrangement to travel to the venue and back, local transport will be
taken care by the workshop organizers.

Note : As the seats are limited (up to 35 participants), the participants would
