I had the privilege of witnessing the gift and grace on Andy at
Planetshakers Conference. Not only does he have an incredible
preaching gift but his love for people and the next generation is inspiring.
‘Jesus Over Everything’ is the overflow of a life in love with Jesus. This
book speaks to the cry of every believer who knows that there is more
in God for us and that our true joy is not found in holding on to our lives,
but losing them for the sake of Christ.”

Just a couple of quick things you should know before digging into this
book:

● Firstly,IamfromthegreatestnationonEarth, Australia.
So for all my American friends, just a heads up that
this is all written in proper ‘Queen’s English,’ and
you might see some spelling you don’trecognise.

● Secondly, this is written to coincide with

the planetboom album, Jesus Over Everything.
(Quick! Go get it and listen now
if you haven’t already!) Each chapter matches with
one of the tracks on the album and is an explanation of
the message behind that song. It’s the Word and
worship put together.

● Unless otherwise indicated, all Scripture quotations

are taken from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation.

● Lastly, this is really a collection of messages preached

to and with the young people of planetboom. They
were so powerful for us that we wanted to share
them with you.

Ok, you ready? Let’s go!

L EMME T EL L Y A 10
onestly, this is one of my favourite songs that we have ever done in

H planetboom. It’s not just because it’s crazy and I like the drop, but
because the words are straight truth from the word of God and
declaring that is really powerful. The lyrics are just all about who He is
and so is this first chapter.

We’re going to start by just looking at who God is and getting to know Him
personally, because there’s nothing more important than that. Before we
find out all the amazing things God wants to do in and through our lives, we
need to zone in on really knowing Him.

I don’t want you to just know about Him or know what He does, I want
you to really know Him for yourself — by personal experience. I know this is
God’s desire for you as well. He’s waiting behind the words on these
pages, with a personal invitation for you to know Him in a deeper way.
Planetshakers has always been about this — leading generations into
personal encounters with God where they come to know Him and are
empowered by Him to change their world. And now as the next
generation — you’re up
— it’s your moment! I’m praying that as you read this, you will have
your own God encounter that changes everything. So, if you’re up for it,
then let’s go.

TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM

This chapter is all about falling in love with God, which is actually really
easy to do. To know Him is to love Him. In other words, the more you begin to
know God for yourself, the more you will fall in love with who He is. Simple.
It doesn’t have to be too complicated because when you really begin to see
Him as He is, there is a reaction and stirring in your heart because you were
made for Him and He really is so amazing!
11

I love preaching to young people and I love telling them about what God
wants to do in their lives. I also love to stir people about what our
response to Him should be. I really believe we should praise and
worship with all our hearts, we should put Him first and He does deserve
our best, so I’m definitely not afraid to challenge people about all that! But
to be honest, I LOVE just talking about who He is! When we talk more
about who He is, we probably need to talk less about what we’re
supposed to do in response. The right response comes a lot more
naturally from our hearts when we really get to know Him.

In other words, I could tell a generation how they should be

worshipping, or I could talk about the power and love of Jesus and watch
as their hearts begin to fall in love with Him for themselves. That’s what
this first chapter is all about. I want to start by just talking about who
our God really is and what He says about Himself because it is so
powerful. Faith is ALWAYS stirred in response to the truth of who He is. Our
hearts are always stirred too. I believe that as we look at this together, we
are all going to fall in love with who He is.

LET IT GROW, LET IT GROW

Real relationships grow. That’s how they’re supposed to work. My wife,
Susannah, and I have been married for nearly 6 years now and we are
definitely in love! Back before we got together, we had only known each
other from a distance. I always thought she was really pretty and amazing,
but then one day it just kind of clicked. I was like “Wow, what am I
doing? I need to get to know this girl!” Or … “I gotta make her mine!” It
took a little bit of convincing to get her attention if I’m honest, but
eventually it worked and we started dating.
L EMME T EL L Y A 12

The point is, I knew about her and I liked her, but when we started to
actually get to know each other, that’s when we started to really fall in
love. We didn’t just know each other through other people or because
we were in the same friendship group anymore. It was deeper than that.
We were hanging out together and building a personal relationship and
honestly, it was really simple … the more I got to know her, the more I
loved what I knew. I didn’t have to watch some YouTube tutorial on how
to love a girl, my heart was just responding to what I was learning about
the girl I loved. The more I knew, the more I loved and the more I
wanted to know. And fast forward a few years — I am still learning, I’m
still falling more in love and we are still growing closer. That’s how a
relationship is supposed to work.

So here’s the thing … God wants a relationship with you! That’s why He
sent His Son to die on that cross. He doesn’t want you to know Him
through someone else or just because you’re hanging around ‘God things’
like church. He wants to invite you to really get to know Him personally.
I’m pretty confident that the more you know, the more you will love and
the deeper and closer your relationship will grow.

Now, of course it’s not just all about being in your feelings. In other
words, ‘falling in love’ with God can’t just be about the way it makes
your life feel. No good relationship can be built on that because feelings
change. Actually, let’s be honest, when you’re a young person, feelings
change A LOT.

Forreal,therearedefinitelytimesinanyrelationshipwhenyou don’t feel like

loving, but that’s when you have to understand that love is a choice and
not just a feeling or emotion. I have found from my own experience that
the more I choose to love, the more my feelings line up, and it should be
the same
13

in our relationship with God. The more we choose to know Him, the
more our feelings will line up and the more our love for Him will grow. We’ll
talk more about some of this in a later chapter.

BY EXPERIENCE
Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” This means to
experience the goodness of who He is for yourself, through your own
life and not just from someone else’s story. That’s what your God
wants for you because He knows that without experience, it’s just
theory.

And that’s where my journey of putting Jesus over everything kind of

began. I grew up in a really blessed Christian home with great parents
who taught me about God and modelled a great standard of living for
God. I went to a Christian school, had Christian friends, had Christian
teachers, I knew a lot of verses and stories from the Bible because
other people had taught me, and I even started drumming in church at
a very young age. I guess I knew a fair amount of stuff about God — but
it wasn’t necessarily real for me personally.

I’ve discovered that there are so many other young people growing up
like that around the world too. You can be surrounded by ‘God things’
and still not have God. And it’s not that there’s anything wrong with the
environment that you’re in. It can be giving you heaps of opportunities to
know Him, you just might not be taking them. Going to church or coming
from a Christian home doesn’t mean that you automatically know Jesus,
it just gives you a great platform to get to know Him. It’s like what Ps
Russell says, “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, just like
going to McDonald’s doesn’t make you a hamburger.”
L EMME T EL L Y A 14

Knowing about Him was a great start for me and I really value the
upbringing that I had, but I had to make a personal decision to get to know
God through Jesus Christ for myself
— and so do you!

I didn’t realise that I didn’t know Him until I was confronted with it as a
13-year-old. I went to a youth camp and to be honest, I didn’t really
even go there for God. I went because it was the middle of summer and
my friends were going, and there was a girl I liked who was going as well.
You know how it is. If I wanted to spend my summer with her — or have any
chance of holding her hand — then it meant going on this camp. I didn’t
go with the intention of meeting Jesus — but Jesus went with the
intention of meeting me where I was at. AND I didn’t come home in a
relationship with that girl lols, but I did with my Saviour. Way better
deal!

It was in one of the sessions, during the middle of worship that

something really hit me. Although I’d seen it millions of times in my life
before, I was just watching other people worship God. I don’t know if it
stood out to me more because most of them were my own age and it
brought it home a bit, but all of a sudden I realised I was missing
something.

It just became clear that I knew a lot about God, but didn’t know Him for
myself. I knew the ‘facts’ — but it wasn’t truth to me. I was used to church
and the things of God — almost like God was familiar, but still a stranger.

All at once I knew that I was far from Him, that I needed Him and that I
wanted to open my heart to Him. I needed Him to be more than a good
story, more than religion,
15

more than tradition from my family, more than just polite prayers
before eating food. I needed to know Him personally and by experience.

I prayed a simple prayer, asking Him to forgive me of my sins — the things that
held me at a distance from Him — and I asked Jesus to be the Lord and
Saviour of my life. I wanted to live to know Him. It’s hard to explain what
happened next but it felt like God went from being ‘a reality out there
somewhere’ to ‘right here’ — filling my heart and my life with His love and
presence. I knew that my sin and everything that held me back from
God, was washed away by His grace. I knew that I was right with Him. I
knew that He loved me and was so real to me, and I knew that I wanted
Him for the rest of my life.

That was the single, most powerful day of my life. Even as a 13-year-old I
knew it changed everything. But I can say, nearly 20 years later that
everything since then has been living out of what happened in that
moment. Ever since, I have been learning to know Him more and the
more I know, the more I love, and the more I love, the more I want to
know Him!

If you’re reading this, and you’re thinking “wow I need that too,” then
let’s do something about it right now! Maybe you just realised that you
know about Him, but don’t know Him for yourself. Maybe you feel like
you’re far from Him or you just feel unsure of where you stand with
God. Regardless of who you are and how you feel, you’re only one
prayer away from a close, right relationship with Him. I’d love you to pray
this prayer to open your heart to God and invite Him in, to turn from your
sins and your own way of doing life and to receive a new start in
right relationship with Him.
L EMME T EL L Y A 16

James 4:8a says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”
When this prayer comes from your heart, you can believe God’s promise
that He will come close to you!

Let’s stop right now and pray together. Mean it with all your heart...

Dear God,

I’m praying this prayer today because I want to know You. I might have
known lots about You, but I recognise that
I don’t know You personally andclosely.

God, I am sorry for the way I have lived without You.

I know that I am not perfect, that there’s sin in my life, and that I am lost
without You. Would you please forgive me?

Jesus, I believe that You died on the cross to wash away my sins, and
that You rose again from the grave
to give me new life.

Today, I receive Your forgiveness, and I receive You into my

life as my Lord, Saviour and best friend.

I want to know You, and I am ready to live for You.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen!
17

Amazing! The rest of us are so pumped for you right now! If you did just
pray that prayer for the first time - please tell someone like a church
leader or a friend who can help you with this journey.

WHO DIS?
Now that we’ve all made a decision to live to know Him, I want to
really look at Who He is. This is the part that I’ve been waiting for!

I don’t know if you have ever thought about this or seriously asked
yourself this question, but who do you really think God is? And don’t
give me some smart answer of what you think you’re supposed to say. I
mean, deep down in your heart, who is God to you? This question is actually
really important because so many things in our lives are determined by
our answer to it. I know who the Bible says God is and that who He is
doesn’t change, but who He is to you will determine the way you live, the
way you pray and the decisions you make.

In Matthew 16, Jesus asked His disciples a similar question: “Who do

people say that I am?” They discussed it back and forth, “Some say you’re
John the Baptist, some say you’re Elijah ... ” But then Jesus made it
personal … “ Who do YOU say that I am?”

It’s like when the teacher asks you a question in class and it’s obvious
they already know the answer. Jesus wasn’t asking because He didn’t
know, and He wasn’t asking because He had identity issues or was feeling
insecure and needed the squad to hype Him up. He didn’t need them to
believe in Him so He could feel good about Himself. He knew exactly
who He was, but Jesus needed His disciples to know who He was
because what we believe influences the decisions
L EMME T EL L Y A 18

we make. These men would later be used by God to reshape the world, so
He knew that who He was to them made all the difference. To some, He
was just a good man, but to others, He was the Christ.

So, who is God to you? Think about it for a second, because you’re
actually living out of your answer to that question. I believe we live out
of our ‘perception’ of who God is — so we definitely need to make sure
we get it right! I can’t afford for this to be based off someone else’s
stories or things I’ve just heard about Him. I need my understanding to
come out of what the Holy Spirit reveals in the Word of God, and that’s
what we’re going to look at in just a second.

TRUE OR FALSE
Unfortunately, it’s easy for us to have a wrong perception about who
God is because He has been so misrepresented around the world. Lies
and misunderstandings about Him have been passed on to our generation
from previous generations. No wonder so many young people think they
don’t want to have anything to do with God. It’s because they have no
idea who He really is.

It might seem easy to blame someone else for feeding you some lie
about God, but the truth is, God’s enemy, satan (I’m not even giving his
name a capital letter because he doesn’t deserve it), has been working
since the beginning of creation to distort the image of God on the
Earth. Jesus called him the ‘father of lies’ and said that he has been lying
since the beginning (John 8:44). Satan knows that everything in life starts
from knowing who God is, and if he can keep us from that, he will keep us
from everything God has for us.
19

Everyone knows someone who has an issue with lying or like extreme
exaggerating. Think about it — you know that person that starts telling
you a story and you can’t help but roll your eyes and say, “sure … ” Or
maybe you are that friend. Maybe someone just thought of you when
they read this. Sorry about that. The thing is, when that person —
who you know has a history of lying - tries to tell you something, you don’t
really believe them. Even if what they’re saying seems like it could be
true - you don’t believe it because of who it is that is telling you. It’s kind
of foolish and gullible to believe someone who has a reputation as a liar.

Well just think about that. Why would we believe anything the enemy
of God would tell us about God? It would be super foolish for us to
believe something he says because he has been lying since the
beginning. And even though you might not have been sitting there having
a conversation with satan (I hope not anyway) — you may not realise that
he has been working through situations, other people in your life, your
past experiences and even things you have been taught, to try and distort
your view of who God really is. I don’t know about you, but I don’t
want to see some pixelated, blurry image of God that won’t load
properly. I want a clear, right vision of who He is.

Jesus called satan the ‘father of lies,’ (John 8:44) but He also called the Holy
Spirit ‘The Spirit of truth’ and said that He would guide us into all truth
(John 16:13). I guess He does the exact opposite of the enemy. While
satan has tried to mess up what you think about God, Holy Spirit wants to
show you the truth about God, and He’s really good at it!
L EMME T EL L Y A 20

So, while we look at this right now, let’s ask Holy Spirit to show to us
who God really is so that we can replace every lie with the truth! Pray this
prayer with me:

Holy Spirit, thank You that You are

with me right now and
that You ALWAYS lead me into truth.

I’m asking right now that

You would show me the truth about
who God really is and who He wants to be in my life.

And also, I ask that You would help me identify any lies
that I have believed about God so that we can get rid of
them and
replace them with the truth.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
21

LEMME TELLYA BOUT HIM

L
emme Tellya Bout Him. But man, how do you put God into
words!? How do you sum Him up? He is way too big for us to
truly comprehend and understand. We
can measure the biggest stars in the universe and even estimate how
far away from earth they are, but God has no beginning and no end, so we
can’t even find out how big He is. We can’t compare Him with anything. I
could try and learn, to the absolute limits of human capacity, and still
only be at the beginning of finding out who He is. Just think about some
of these things:

● “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the

Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could
imagine.” (Isaiah 55:8)
● ‘“To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal?”
asks the Holy One.’ (Isaiah 40:25)
● “Look, God is greater than we can understand. His years
cannot be counted.” (Job 36:26)
● “He counts the stars and calls them all by name.”
(Psalm 147:4)
● “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the
earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can
measure the depths of His understanding.” (Isaiah
40:28)

But then think about this … God — this huge, limitless God
— wants to be known by you! And before you freak out and think that
you’re not smart enough for that, don’t worry. Knowing and
understanding God is not about being smart — it’s about believing. In
fact, sometimes the people that think they’re the smartest, miss out on
God because they think
L EMME T EL L Y A 22

it doesn’t make sense. 1 Corinthians 1 talks about how God made this
plan about knowing Him so simple, that anyone could follow it.

In other words … He is so incredibly complex, but makes Himself simple

enough for us to grasp. He’s way beyond our understanding, but makes
Himself understandable for us. This is because He wants to be in personal
relationship with us and it’s hard to have a friendship with someone you can’t
understand.

If you’ve got younger brothers or sisters or if you’ve ever tried to have a

conversation with someone a lot younger than you, then you would know
what I’m getting at. You can’t just jump in and start talking about
everything you’re into because they won’t understand what you’re
saying. You have to talk on their level so you can relate to them. I guess
that’s a bit like what God does with us. We can’t relate on His level
because it’s way beyond us, but He loves to reveal Himself to us in ways
we can comprehend so that we can have relationship with Him. I really
believe we can know Him by experience and that He wants us to get to
know Him.

Knowing God is all about faith, and you’ve got faith! Faith doesn’t
mean that I can’t understand or don’t need to understand. It means
that I don’t wait to understand before I believe! Logic tells me to
understand something before I believe. Faith tells me to believe Him
first, then let my understanding grow out of that. Hebrews 11:3 says,
it’s “by faith we understand …” Knowing God is all about believing the
truth of what He says about Himself.
