Attendance Policy

Attendance and timeliness at all rehearsals and performances is required and vital to the success of the program. The
band functions as a total unit, and any time you are absent or late it diminishes the result obtained by all other band
members. Every member of the band and guard is important, and you are no less important than a soloist, section
leader, or drum major. All students must make every effort possible to be at every rehearsal the entire time. During the
marching season, if you do not attend or are late/leave early from a rehearsal, you will run the risk of not participating in
that Friday or Saturday’s performance. Due to how much we try to cover in each rehearsal the limited amount of time
we rehearse, it only takes one rehearsal to make a student fall very behind. Excessive absences or tardies for any reason
may result in the loss of your marching spot or being switched to “alternate status”. During the concert season, if a
student misses or is late/leaves early from 3 or more after school rehearsals for any reason, the student will run the risk
of not participating in the following performance.

STUDENTS MUST CONTACT THE BAND DIRECTORS TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE TO BE EXCUSED FROM A REHEARSAL
AND A MONTH IN ADVANCE TO BE EXCUSED FROM A PERFORMANCE.

Attendance will be taken at all rehearsals and performances just like in class and will be recorded. All band events are
inclusive in the co-curricular class setting and will affect all band students’ grades (excused absences and tardies can be
made up by staying before/after school or before/after rehearsal to make up the practice time that was missed). Any
unexcused absences or tardies will immediately drop a student’s grade without the opportunity to receive make-up
credit.

Excusable absences/tardies include:

 Death in the family
 Religious holidays, weddings, or religious family gatherings
 Serious injury (doctor’s note required)
 Sick from school (must notify band directors DIRECTLY prior to the start of rehearsal)
 Athletic events with PRIOR APPROVAL

Inexcusable absences/tardies include:

 Doctor/Dentist Appointments (with the exception of emergency appts due to illness)
 Homework/Studying (learn to manage your time wisely)
 Driving Exam/Permit Test
 Couldn’t get a ride (Contact us in advance if you are having transportation issues, we will get you a ride)
 Work (Post your band schedule at work so they do not schedule you. SCHOOL COMES FIRST!)
 Club Meetings or Detention (Represent the program at the highest level at all times)
 Birthday parties/dinners, informal family gatherings, pop/rock concerts or sporting events, etc.
 Family trips (may be excused in special circumstances if proper notice given)

All band events for the year are scheduled and on the CHARMS calendar for your clarification and to use as you schedule
other non-band events. Any unavoidable conflicts should be listed on the appropriate conflict sheet. Sometimes events
will be added and participation is mandatory. Notice for these mandatory events will be given as soon as possible and
any unavoidable conflicts will be handled on a person by person basis. Attendance at any band event scheduled less
than two weeks in advance will be expected, but legitimate absences will be excused.

By signing below, I agree to abide by the stated attendance policy and understand the policies set forth by the
XXXXXXXXXXX Band Program.
