Industry 4.

0 is transforming the paradigms of design, business,

management and engineering education across the globe. As the
epoch of invention and engineering science wanes, innovation and

ABOUT engineering design that are set to take center stage, demand from
the 21st century engineer, a holistic and composite know-how
on IT, design, business, and management in addition to technical
acumen. The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and
Manufacturing, Kancheepuram, established by the Government of India
to pioneer this constitutional transition, focuses on educating the bright
young minds of the country in design-oriented engineering. An Institute
of National Importance, it is one of the first in India to integrate IT,
design, business, humanities, and management courses in its dynamic
engineering curriculum both at UG and PG level. Our students, chosen
through nationwide competitive testing, are uniquely skilled owing to
3-semester-long product design projects and uncompromising practical
sessions in our state-of-the-art labs. Home to astute and experienced
faculty, the flourishing interdisciplinary design and research projects
are a testimony to the liberal and conducive academic atmosphere of
the institution. IIITDM produces skilled, ambitious and conscionable
graduates who confront challenges and initiate changes in the industry
to propel India’s dream of being a prominent, purposeful player on the
global grounds of the fourth industrial revolution.

Director’s
Desk
Prof. Banshidhar Majhi
Director

At the outset, I extend my warm greetings on behalf of IIITDM Kancheepuram and

on my personal behalf. IIITDM Kancheepuram is a unique Institution of National
importance with a special mandate to produce quality engineers in the field of
Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Smart Manufacturing with a special thrust to IT,
Design, and Manufacturing.

Unlike outputs from other technical institutions, our products are imbibed with
core courses along with special knowledge in IT, Design and Manufacturing. The
unique curriculum is framed keeping Industry 4.0 standard in mind and has
Three IT courses, Six Design and Manufacturing courses across the disciplines.
The students undertake interdisciplinary projects leading to smart products. The
curriculum also supports three months summer internship followed by a semester
duration industry projects.

IIITDM has a strong industry connect with MoUs signed for collaborative product
oriented Research and Development. The strong faculty base graduated from top
tech schools engage the students in R&D activities to make them innovative and
future thinkers. Since inception, IIITDM has been a meeting point of ideas and
congregation of best academic practices.

Overall the students groomed up in a conducive environment are industry ready

by the time they pass out from IIITDM and and I am sure they are industry-ready
and productive from day one. I welcome you once again to realize your experience
with IIITDM faculty and students.

continually identifying needs, generating potent
ideas, conceptualizing and prototyping, and
converting them to viable products.

& Innovate With the current industrial standards and consumer

awareness, it is necessary to design products that are
easy to manufacture, efficient and also become part
of users themselves.

To facilitate such requirements, design has been one

of the cornerstones of the institute, in line with its
vision of ‘Design, Create, and Innovate’.

The students have at their disposal a variety of design

based engineering courses that helps to bridge the
gap between industry and academia and provides
opportunities for increased collaboration.

The plethora of interdisciplinary courses promote

flow of thought across different streams, assisting
students in acquiring holistic knowledge and
thereby encouraging them to become successful
entrepreneurs.

Product Design &
Prototyping
Apart from final year projects, the students at
both UG and PG level explore conceptual design
and product development through self developed
workable models. The design usually begins
with a survey and followed by a visual prototype.
Upon technical analysis and review comments
of the expert committee, a green signal is given
to exhibit the proof of concept. The products are
interdisciplinary and thus the teams are also inter-
departmental. The students are free to use additive
prototyping or traditional model making of material
of suitable choice. This approach helps the students
to understand the importance of interdisciplinary
nature of present and futuristic product design. The
students practice customer interview and house of
quality in the need stage; creative techniques such as

Summer Students take up summer internships in the starting
Internships of their final year which is part of the curriculum to
gain first-hand experience of the professional world.
Internships serve as the perfect platform for students
to sneak a preview into the working of professional life
while allowing recruiters to evaluate a student’s long-
term potential by monitoring their performance in
real-world tasks.

Students gain exposure to real-world problems and

issues that perhaps are not found in textbooks and
cultivate adaptability and creativity in a dynamic
world. The internship gives the student an easy
transition from a student to a professional workforce.
It also increases opportunities within a company for
faster advancement and growth. These internships last
upto 5 months starting from May and extending till
mid of October.

International Relations
In today’s globalised world, the importance of international relations is profound,
especially in the field of education. The scale of educational exchange across
borders is widening day by day.

IIITDM Kancheepuram encourages interactive educational exchange programs

with many established and reputed institutions to provide a globalised and
informative environment to its students. In light of these interactions, IIITDM
maintains active collaborations with various industry and academia of repute,
both within and outside India. Summer internships, scholarship programs and
invited talks by various researchers and professors from these organizations are
main thrust of these engagements.

The Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) for Design and
Manufacturing Education is funded by the Ministry
of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the
Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on
Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) scheme.

The TLC aims to design, develop and disseminate

extremely affordable laboratory instruction modules for
adoption and use in engineering universities, colleges
and polytechnics using low-cost open source hardware
and software with Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and Build-
Your-Own (BYO) methodologies. The knowledge and
experience gained can facilitate innovative projects and
research by students and teachers.
Some of the devices/machines developed in TCL
are desktop computer numerical control (CNC)
mill, lathe, router, laser engraver/cutter, plasma
cutter, and printed circuit board (PCB) machine.

Mobile robots and 2- and 3-link robot

manipulators have also been developed. Three
start ups in robotics, virtual reality (VR) and CNC
machines have been facilitated by TLC.

CNC Mill

Laser
Engraver

3D Printer

TLC is also very active in community and school outreach, and works with government and private high
schools, in setting up and operating student Makerspaces in schools, using curricular materials developed
at TLC. Several students from Japanese universities have interned and volunteered in TLC.

Design Innovation Centre

DIC was established in the year 2016 at IIITDM
Kancheepuram with advanced design and fabrication
infrastructure facilities to support innovation and
start -up. The emphasis of the DIC at IIITDM
Kancheepuram is on three major aspects.

Discovery/ Design,
Development & Dissemination.
Making of engineering education more users
friendly, interactive and practical solution oriented
for development of scientific mind set and engineering
culture. Creation of advanced and precision manufacturing
facility and relevant ecosystem for product developments
and testing, for helping local industry to meet its requirements.
Disseminating the culture of innovation at grass root level by
educating the schools, ITI, polytechnics and local engineering students/
faculty through organization and offering Training Programs / Workshops /
Internships / Design Competitions with focus on self-reliance.
