1. EARTHING

The following must always be ensured in earthing system.

- All earths must be interconnected at the earth pits. This includes generator neutrals, transformer neutrals,
transformer body, lightning protection system earths, UPS earths etc.
- Distance between two earth pits shall not be less than 3 meters.
- Inspection chamber with covers shall be provided.
- Extraneous conductive parts such as gas pipes, other service pipes and ducting risers and pipes of fire
protection equipment and exposed metallic parts of the building structure.

2 The Contractor shall get the soil receptivity test done at his own cost of the area where earthing pits are to be
located before starting the installation.

3. RESISTANCE TO EARTH

The resistance of earthing system shall not exceed 1 ohm. In normal good soil. Calculations of individual
earthing shall be submitted for approval before supply of material.

4. Earthing Electrodes

Earthing electrodes shall be designed as per the requirements of IS: 3043. The number and size of earth
electrodes shall be calculated so that under fault conditions ,no electrode is loaded above its maximum
permissible current density. The resistance of earth system shall not exceed one Ohm in normal condition.

The number of earth electrodes shown in the drawing is indicative. The Contractor shall provide required
additional earth electrodes to contain the ohmic value at no extra cost.

Earthing electrodes (solid rod) type shall be used. The dia of electrode shall be decided according to the
anticipated fault level of the network and local soil conditions. Pipe in pipe electrodes are strictly not allowed.

All grounding electrodes shall be tested with earth meggers and grounding resistances are recorded.

4.2 Maintenance free grounding electrodes.

The Maintenance Free Earth system shall consist of a) Earth electrodes b) Highly conductive and eco friendly
backfill compound, c) Earth termination clamps to facilitate connections to the equipment and d) poly plastic
earth pit cover

4.2.1. Earth Electrode:. The Earth electrode shall confirm to the following specifications:

Prateek Grand City Electrical Specifications

 The electrode shall be a solid steel rod and coated with copper on the outside as per UL 467.
 The thickness of the copper coating shall be at least 250 microns
 The electrode diameter shall be 17.2 or higher.
 The earth electrode shall carry UL marking
.
The length of the electrode shall be minimum 3 mtrs based on the soil conditions.

4.2.2. Highly conductive and Eco friendly backfill material:

The backfill material shall be highly conductive and should be nonpolluting and safe for use near potable
ground water systems. The backfill Material shall be of low resistance, non-corrosive, highly conductive
carbon based powdered material that improves grounding effectiveness, especially in areas of high soil
resistivity such as rocky and sandy areas. This material shall be suitable to be installed in either slurry or dry
form. The backfill material shall confirm to the following specifications:

a. Shall be highly electrically conductive and non-soluble.

b. Shall not leach into ground.
c. Shall have a resistivity of less than 0.12 ohm meter as per clause 14.5 (d) of IEEE 80
d. Shall be compatible with all copper grounding systems
e. Shall contain a corrosion inhibitor to mitigate corrosion of copper
f. Shall not contain hazardous chemicals
g. Shall not be affected by drought and shall be stable between -10˚ to +50˚ C temperature.
h. Shall not depend on continuous presence of moisture for conductivity.
i. Shall be suitable for any kind of soil.
j. Suitable quantity of this backfill compound shall be used per earth pit. Calculation to be submitted by
vendor before supply of material.

4.2.3. Earth termination clamp: The earth termination clamp shall be made of CU/Brass / SS and shall be suitable
for terminating strips. Care should be taken to tighten all bolts and nuts to ensure a proper connection.

4.2.4 Installation of Earth system: The earth electrode shall be installed in a bore made by auguring 3 or 4
inches hole up to the required depth. Where ever auguring is not feasible, pit shall be made and suitable size
of PVC pipe shall be used to fix the electrode. At the center of the hole the electrode shall be driven and
around the electrode the highly conductive and eco friendly backfill material shall be filled. The highly
conductive and eco friendly backfill material can be poured in either dry or slurry form. The PVC pipe shall be
removed simultaneously as the backfill compound is poured.

8. No of earth pits per site:

The number earth pits sets required for the respective site will be arrived at based on the soil resistivity of the
respective site . Vendor shall propose number of earth pits and connecting strip required based on this data.
All the individual earth pits shall be interconnected to form an earth system.

.
Precautions

Earthing system shall be mechanically robust and the joints shall be capable of retaining low resistance, even
after passage of fault currents.

Joints shall be welded, bolted or double-riveted. All welded joints are painted with cold zinc galvanizing paint.
All the joints shall be mechanically and electrically, continuous and effective. Joints shall be protected against
corrosion. Advanced welding such as Thermo welding may be applied to extremely critical joints and
connections.

Testing

On the completion of the entire installation, tests on the earth resistance of the earthing system shall be
conducted using an earth-testing Meggar.

All meters, instruments and labour required for the tests shall be provided by the Contractor. The test results
shall be submitted in triplicate to the AE / Owner for approval. Tests shall be conducted in the presence of
Engineer in charge / Owner.
