Rational Method Equation
The Rational equation is a method to determine peak discharge from drainage basin runoff. It is
the most common method used for sizing rainwater drainage systems.

Rational equation: Q=cIA

The Rational equation requires the following units:


Q = Peak discharge, (l/s)
c = Rational method runoff coefficient, adimensional
I = Rainfall intensity, (l/s, m2)
A = Drainage area, (m2)

The Rational method runoff coefficient (c) is a function of the soil type and drainage basin slope. A
simplified table is shown below.

The Rainfall intensity (I) is typically found from Intensity/Duration/Frequency curves for rainfall
events in the geographical region of interest. The duration is usually equivalent to the time of
concentration of the drainage area.

The total flowrate of 313 l/s consists of:

- 216.86 l/s flowrate that will be used for WCs, urinals and bib taps (for cleaning
purposes) water supply and
- 95.83 l/s flowrate that will be directly discharge into the drainage/infiltration system
(collected from the green roofs/terraces).
