TEXT 1

1. Read the text.

Where are you right now? At home, university, a friend’s house, a cyber cafe?
Look around, what do you see? You see walls, floors, ceilings and furniture. At first
glance it appears typical of interior space and your activities continue. Do you realize
that you evaluate your surroundings and react to them? A positive reaction goes
unnoticed. A negative reaction can affect your mood, health and interpersonal
relations. The physical environment affects the occupants. It’s not just walls, floors,
colors and furniture, it’s an environment that is created through design.
Interior design studies the relationship between physical space and its
occupants. At first glance it might appear negligible, but think of places you like.
Certain restaurants, stores, rooms in your house or even the work place and ask why?
Typically it is due to the design of the space. Design elements work together in
creating an environment that solicits response.
An interior designer learns to understand the design process and its application
in daily life. This is an area in which we are all participants beginning from the colors
in our nursery. What should be recommended? Shape the environment and thus, you
will change the future.

surroundings, environment - окружение, среда

to evaluate - оценивать
negligible - незначительный, ничтожный

TEXT 2

1. Read the text.

The History of Interior Design
In the modern world, human life activities are played out in interior spaces. We
may love being out-of-doors for the sense of open air and sky, for the escape it offers
from life inside enclosure, but the very joy of being outside reflects the reality that so
much of life is spent inside.
Buildings and their interiors are planned to serve the purposes and styles from
the times of their origins, but they exert their influence on the activities and lives that
they house as long as they continue to be used.
The study of interior design, its development and change through history is a
useful way both to explore the past and to make sense of the spaces in which modern
life is lived.
Professional interior designers are expected to study design history, to know
the practices of the past in the terms of “styles”, and to know the names and the
nature of the contributions of those individuals who generated the most interesting
and influential approaches to design.

escape – спасение
enclosure - ограждение
purpose – цель

Part 1
1. Read the text.
Antoni Gaudi
In Barcelona, Spain, although there is a variety of work in the Art Nouveau
style, the dominant figure of Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) stands out as the inventor of
a highly personal vocabulary of flowing curves and unusual decorative details.
His 1904-1906 reconstruction of an older building, Casa Batllу, included a new
facade of complex, bone-like forms with a fantastic roof line and, for some
apartments, remarkable interiors. Paneled doors are studded with small mirrors of
irregular shape; ceilings are of plaster in swirling curved forms.
Gaudi developed fantastic curving, sometimes bone-like, sometimes wiry
forms for furniture designed to be custom made by skilled craftsmen for specific
projects. The Guell Park (1905-1914) and unfinished Sagrada Familia church (1903-
1926) exhibit Gaudi's fantastic and highly personal stylistic vocabulary on a major
scale.

Gerrit Rietveld
The best known De Stijl ("the style") work was produced by Gerrit Rietveld
(1888-1964), whose Schruder House at Utrecht is the most complete realization of
the movement's ideas. It is a rectilinear block made up of complex, interpenetrating
planes of wall, roof, and protruding floor, with voids filled by glass in metal sash.
The (upper) main living floor is divided by a system of sliding panels that
permit rearrangement to achieve varying degrees of openness. Built-in and movable
furniture of Rietveld's design is geometric and abstract in concept. Only primary
colors and black are introduced within the generally white and gray tones of most
surfaces.
Because of its few members, short life, and limited accomplishments, De Stijl
influence in the development of modernism has been less obvious than that of the
pioneers in Germany and France.

movement – движение
rectilinear - прямолинейный
interpenetrating - взаимопроникающий
plane – плоскость
protruding – выступающий, выдающийся
void - пустота
sash – рамка, обрамление

6. Why is the influence of De Stijl in the development of modernism not so obvious?

Part 3
1. Read the text.
Alvar Aalto
The most important of the "second-tier" pioneer modernists is the Finnish
architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976). Aalto's career began amid the
romanticism and Nordic nationalism of Lars Sonck and Eliel Saarinen, with its links
to Neoclassicism and Jugendstil movements of the late 19th century.
Americans were able to see an Aalto design at first hand at the New York
World's Fair of 1939. The box-like interior space of the Finnish exhibit was made
remarkably interesting by the introduction of flowing, free-form walls. There was a
wall of wood strips over the main exhibit space that screened additional exhibit space
on an upper level.

18
A balcony restaurant with provision for film projection from a startling
suspended free-form projection booth completed the exhibit. In spite of its small size
and somewhat obscure location at the fair, Aalto's design attracted highly favorable
critical comment.

Pierre Chareau
Pierre Chareau (1883-1950) is best known for his 1928-32 Maison de Verre
(House of Glass) in Paris that made use of steel framing and large areas of glass block
and plate glass.
His furniture designs included both chairs of rich woods and heavy upholstery
and simple folding seating with metal framing and wicker seats and backs, suggesting
a move from Art Deco to the International Style.

Philip Johnson

In 1949, aware of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth house, Philip Johnson
designed his own house at New Canaan, Connecticut, as an all glass-walled box with
only a small cylindrical brick enclosure to house a bathroom and to provide a location
for a fireplace.
The kitchen was a counter with lift tops giving access to equipment. The
furniture was all of Mies's design, using brown leather on chrome frameworks, while
major works of art introduced a variety of less rigorous forms into the space. The red
tiles of the floor and the outward view into surrounding greenery establish color.
This "Glass House" has become a famous example of the possibilities of an
open plan carried to its logical, extreme conclusion.

Walter Gropius
The direct influence of International Style modernism increased hugely when
several of the European leaders of the movement arrived in the United States.
Walter Gropius was the architect of his own house at Lincoln, Massachusetts
(1937). A fine example of International Style design, it has a typical flat roof, large
glass areas, and such details as an entrance supported by tubular columns, an external
spiral stair, and generous use of glass block.
The white walls are, surprisingly, not of concrete or stucco but of wood boards
typical of vernacular New England building. The interiors are of elegant simplicity
and display many pieces of furniture by various members of the modern movement.
The house is now landmarked and open to visitors.

TEXT 4
1. Read the text.
What colors are the rooms in your house painted? Would it surprise you to
learn that the colors around you can affect how you feel? Well, it’s true, color can
drastically affect your mood. So it makes sense to surround yourself with colors you
like and ones that will put you into a positive frame of mind.
Red, for example, is a strong color, so too much of it in a room can be
overwhelming. But, in small amounts, red is energizing and can make us feel active
and excited. Red is best used outside or in a room where we spend a short amount of
time each day.
Orange can make us feel enthusiastic and talkative. Extroverts usually prefer
this color because it makes them feel adventurous. Orange stimulates our appetites
too, so it would be perfect for the kitchen or dining room.
Yellow is an uplifting color and can make us feel cheerful and happy. However,
it is a color that should be used sparingly because too much can make us feel
impatient.
Blue is the color that is most universally preferred, and blue rooms instil
peacefulness so it is a good choice for studies or doctors’ waiting rooms. Blue can
also help us feel calm and confident, but it suppresses our appetites so it’s only a
good choice for the kitchen if you are on a diet.
Green is often used in hospitals because of its soothing properties. It has the
power to make us feel relaxed and refreshed. Therefore, don’t paint a work area green
because you won’t get much work done. Green is a good choice for bedrooms.
White is often used in doctors’ offices because it gives us an impression of
cleanliness. However, it does nothing to relax us – we just feel cautious and nervous.
It can also make us feel isolated and withdrawn.
Therefore, we should think carefully about our color schemes when the time
comes to redecorate because different colors can affect how we feel in a number of
ways. That said, though, we should rely on our taste and surround ourselves with the

24
colors we like and feel comfortable with. Use your favourite colors to create a color
scheme you know you can live with.

drastically – круто, резко

a positive frame of mind – положительный настрой
overwhelming - подавляющий
sparingly – скупо, нечасто
impatient - нетерпеливый
to instil – внушать, вселять
confident - уверенный
to suppress - подавлять
soothing - успокаивающий
property - свойство
cautious - осторожный
isolated - изолированный
withdrawn – сдержанный, замкнутый
to rely on – полагаться, рассчитывать

Architect Yury Andreev says he likes simple things and simple, ordinary food;
but VILLA, the restaurant he has designed on Moscow's Myasnitskaya street, offers
only refined European cuisine. He also says he does not like to travel doing so only
when absolutely necessary and preferring a little evening reading, especially of
architectural albums, to a change of scenery. But since the disappearance of the
Soviet Union, he has spent his life travelling between two countries: Russia and
Latvia. Yury is convinced that an interior decorator is simply an architect in truncated
form, and for this reason never engages decorators to take part in his projects. He
designed and decorated VILLA, his latest creation, from start to finish entirely on his
own in the best traditions of Art Deco. The simple, but elegant furniture combined
with the exotic decor; the abundance of sculpture in the interior; the beauty of line;
the expressiveness of the materials; the blue, red, brown, and gold: all this is evidence
of style. Add the genuine smell of money in the air and what you get is Art Deco, a
style "whose main goal was the creation of prosperity and luxury in the years of the
lost generation," as Soviet art critics used to write. They, of course, hated Art Deco as
a class enemy — but we love it.

Gareth Williams, London’s trendiest museum curator, speaks about the Victoria

“The Victoria and Albert Museum was established as a collection showcasing
industrial design; it was never a museum of fine arts. The driving idea is to inspire
designers and the industry in general to create beautiful things. Today, we are

The twentieth century is the first century of self-conscious, total design at
every level of our living and environment. Care and vision in application of design
are demanded in every aspect of modern life - from our kitchens and bathrooms, to
our factories and workshops, from our clothes and domestic objects, to the packaging
of pocket calculators or the structuring of plastic dining chairs.
Although the word has been used since at least the fifteenth century, when
Italian writers spoke of 'disegno' in describing the quality of line possessed by an
image, in all essentials 'design' is an industrial or post-industrial concept. With the
introduction of mass-production, the people who invented ideas for objects became
separated from the people who made them who, again, were separated from the
people who sold them. The industrial revolution also created the concept of the
market. Personal need was replaced by a more abstract demand: the tastes of a large,
amorphous body of consumers.
The modern designer came into being as an intermediary between industry and
the consumer. His role was to adapt the products of industry to the mass market, to
make them more useful and durable, perhaps, but to make them more appealing and
commercially successful, certainly. Commercial success is the touchstone of
achievement in design, although designers in different cultures have often taken
different views as to how the achievement is measured or the success validated.

Design in business and advertisement means much. The story of style in the
applied arts since the mid-to late fifties has been dominated by various new forces,
including social and economic factors and certain aspects of technical and scientific
progress. Now we have computer design, web design, advertisement design (for
example consumer-product branding design) and the whole fashion of different types
of ad, colors and so on.
The late fifties saw the birth of advertising as we know it today, a high-
powered business dedicated to the development effective marketing techniques; it

39
involved new design concepts and a whole new professional jargon of product
packaging, market research, corporate images and house style.
The Pop Art movement embraced the work of a new generation of artists of
late fifties and early sixties of both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain, in addition to the
Independent Group, there were Peter Blake, Allen Jones. In USA Jasper Johns, Tom
Wesselman, Claes Oldenburg and other formalized the language of product
packaging, from beer cans to Campbell's Soup tins of strip cartoons, fast food,
advertising hoardings and pin-ups.
Pop Art at once reflected and glorified mass-market culture and injected a new
vigour into the applied arts. Pop Art suggested a new palette оf colours and gave a
fresh, ironical edge to the imagery of popular culture. Pop Art positively encouraged
designers to exploit vulgarity, brashness and bright colour, and to use synthetic or
disposable materials in contexts in which they would formerly have been
unacceptable. Pop Art has had a lasting effect on design in a wide variety of media,
including interiors, graphics and fashion.

Part 1
1. Read the text
Tricia Foley, author, editor, and product designer loves natural colors and
vintage linens. She employs a simple decorating style that is both practical and

47
personal. Showcased in the book, Designer In Residence, her house is a study of
simplicity and restraint. It was constructed from stock lumber and easily available
parts. The room welcomes guests all summer long with an interior in white, beige,
tan, and other natural colors and accessories. She notes; "A classic neutral color
scheme creates a soothing background for the life you lead in your home, surrounded
by the things that have meaning to you." If you love the idea of simple vintage decor,
you will want to hear what else Tricia has to say about decorating...

Q. What are some of the common decorating mistakes made by homeowners? What
is your advice on how to avoid or correct those mistakes?

Tricia Foley: "I think that many people try to copy what's trendy rather than trusting
their own personal style in decorating a home and then the look doesn't last. If you're
really not sure about making decorating decisions, keep a file of pictures of favorite
rooms culled from books and magazines to help narrow it down.

"In terms of color for walls, I always do a test patch and live with it to see how the
color responds to the light and with the existing furnishings. It's also important to put
it all together and make sure that your color palette is compatible and that you're not
acquiring furniture and accessories in bits and pieces that don't work together."

Q. What would be your recommendation for "what to do first" in a decorating

project?

Tricia Foley: "It makes sense to follow the architectural style of the space. Determine
the function of the room and really think about how you will use it. Then furnish it
appropriately for those uses. Finally, layer of your own personal style – not someone
else's. Aim for personal comfort as well as visual appeal level."

Q. What tips do you have on themes, fabric and color choices, window treatments,
furniture, etc. when decorating a long lasting room for a young child?

Tricia Foley: "First I would consider the existing style of the home. When working
with a traditional home, I would tend to use a softer color palette that works with the
rest of the house or apartment. If the family has a more modern sensibility, a clean
bright color palette would be more in keeping with their aesthetic. There are so many
wonderful choices available from mail order catalogs these days. You'll find
furnishings that are affordable and have classic styling that can be used in children's
rooms or family rooms."

Q. What trends do you see in room décor for kids in colors, themes, furnishings, etc.?

Tricia Foley: "I see children's rooms as part of the home, not so much a separate
world. I would design the space so that it visually belongs to the rest of the family
spaces. It should also be a comfort zone for children and a place for them to express
themselves with their own things — there are lots of great storage units, armoires,
bins, etc. that are perfect for kids rooms."

Q. Many people like the idea of updating their interiors for the seasons. What
techniques do you use to transition your home from winter into spring/summer?
Tricia Foley: "I have a simple shades of white interior in my little country house that
is a great backdrop for the changing seasons. In spring a bucket of bright yellow
forsythia is usually blooming. Summer brings piles of shells and stones from walks
on the beach. I also love to have jugs of roses from my garden all over the house. I
roll up the rugs and put away the flannel sheets and comforters. Fall brings out wool
throws draped over chairs, a fire in the fireplace, and bittersweet branches to bring a
little bit of the outdoors inside. The holiday season is always a white Christmas for
me. Amaryllis and paperwhites are potted with moss. Then I use greens and simple
white lights on the tree."

Q. What decorating techniques/ideas/projects would you recommend to a homeowner

who wants to rev up the look of a bedroom or living room for spring, without
spending a fortune?

Tricia Foley: "I find that all my friends are simplifying and just having the things
they love around them. I find that clutter is so distracting and high maintenance.
When you have a simple backdrop, it is easy to change a look with sheets, flowers, or
54
arranging a collection in a new way. Sometimes, you don't even appreciate what you

Q. Most of us are always eager to know what are the "latest" color, design, and
furnishings trend. Can you comment on what you see in trends and how homeowners
might create interiors that are up-to-date but classic?

Tricia Foley: "Again, it's never made sense to me to create a Southwestern style
home or a farmhouse look in a high rise apartment building in a city. My main
objective is to design a space appropriately so it makes sense. Then everything seems
to fall into place visually. A classic neutral color scheme creates a soothing backdrop
for the life you lead in your home. Surround yourself with the things that have
meaning to you. Although I've seen beautiful red living rooms and soft pink
bedrooms that I've loved, I don't think I would want to live in them every day. A

bunch of red tulips or bouquet of pale pink peonies in a neutral room does the trick
for me!"

Q. Bookshelves are a wonderful place to display everything from collectibles and

photographs to books and boxes. However, many homeowners find accessorizing a
bookcase somewhat intimidating. Do you have any tips or advice for someone who
would like to avoid the straight rows of books?

in groups makes more of a statement, instead of being scattered around on shelves."

for example, they do not know if they should buy a blue sofa, paint the walls blue, or

order blue carpeting. Can you comment on using our favourite colors and ways to
incorporate them into home décor?

Carnival Spirit's interior design, celebrates world's great architectural styles.
From art nouveau to postmodern to funky to Egyptian, the public rooms on the
newest ship, the Carnival Spirit, celebrate a wide variety of architectural styles in
their interior-design themes. As the Carnival Spirit represents a new class of "Fun
Ship", its interior design reinvents the traditional central thematic idea by creating a
mood of diversity through a synthesis of highly divergent décors.
"Although the central idea for this ship could be called 'noteworthy décor
styles,' it's really a very abstract unifying theme," said Joe Farcus, interior architect
for the "Fun Ship" fleet.
"There is a main decorative style used in each of the public rooms - Chinese in
one, art deco in another, for example - however, the styles are not necessarily
executed in a traditional manner, but rather are more interpretive," he added.
The Spirit Lobby and some public areas are decorated in the art deco style,
which uses sleek, graceful lines and slender organic forms. The lobby houses two
grand staircases, a bar with dance floor and the information and tour desks. Rich
wood and antiqued copper are used extensively in the lobby, stairwells and elevator
bays. Railings are a lacy cast copper, stained glass domes in the ceiling provide
diffused lighting, and the walls and elevators combine wood, handmade etched plates,
marble inlaid frames and embossed copper trimmings.

The Spirit has several rooms not found on other Carnival ships, perhaps most
noteworthy among them the dining venue, the Nouveau Supper Club. It is located at
the top of a soaring nine-deck-high atrium and housed under a red tinted glass dome.
Art nouveau is characterized by dense, winding floral forms in a linear arrangement.
It incorporates organic shapes – vines, leaves, flowers, branches – into abstracted
architectural elements.
In the supper club, pillars are shaped like flower buds in a Tiffany-like design
using antiqued copper for the stems and leaves. The floral pattern is carried out

68
throughout the room in hand-painted wall murals, the stained glass balcony on the
upper level and the bud-shaped bar stools. On one side of the room is a beverage bar,
and on the other, a display cooking area with bar stools, so guests can watch the
cooks at work. The circular, two-level room has a stage for entertainers, as well as a
dance floor.
There is the Chippendale Library on board the Carnival Spirit. Named after
Thomas Chippendale, the 15th-century English style of furniture is recognized by its
graceful lines and rococo ornamentation. The room's main features are columns
shaped like giant Chippendale table legs. The mural of an English garden overlooks a
traditional secretary and bookcases mounted on desks, which hold computer
terminals offering internet access for guests.

The three-level Pharaoh's Palace Lounge is decorated in Egyptian style.
Sarcophagi designed after that of the golden King Tutankhamen are situated between
the windows and stone walls which are decorated with hieroglyphics. Twenty-foot-
tall stone figures flank the stage. A circular staircase and elevator provide access to all
three levels of the lounge, which has a retractable orchestra pit, turntable stage and
loft for scenery, lights and stage props.
The ornate Versailles Lounge is located one deck below the Egyptian Lounge,
and, as its name implies, is richly done in the elegant, highly decorative manner that

entertainers and the audience. Since the room is on a lower deck, there are no
windows. However, faux windows have been created using ornate frames around
French skyline scenes of chateaux with starry skies lit by fiber optics. With a large
dance floor, the room has been designed as a cross between a lounge and an intimate
theater.
"Funky" best describes the décor of the two-level Dancing Club. A large dance

Feng Shui Tips for Your Home Office
Feng Shui is a very popular and intriguing concept in home design today. In
addition to the life benefits it provides, it also offers a roadmap, so to speak, of not
just how to decorate but why. In short, it offers you, the homeowner, design with
purpose.

77
Did you know that over 50% of women now run their own home business or
work from home? Get your compass out and find the following directions because we
are going to try and make things run a little smoother for you using the ancient art of
object placement – Feng Shui.
The most ideal locations to situate a home office are the North (the career
sector), the Southwest (the wealth sector), the Northeast (skills and talents sector) or
the South (the fame and recognition sector.) If it is possible, try to locate your home
office in one of those locations.
Here are some other general tips that are thought to bring prosperity to your
business.
Always sit with a solid wall behind your back to ensure that you have support
in your life. Never sit with a window behind you.
In the office place the fax machine, telephone, and computers in the southeast
wealth sector, as this will attract more contacts.
Position your desk to have a clear view of the door. If this is not possible, hang
a small mirror so you can easily view the door's reflection.
Don't put a shelf over your desk. This symbolizes burdens of the world
crashing down on you at any moment. The heavy shelf also symbolizes burdens and
difficulties.
Avoid having sharp accessories, such as a paper cutter blade or the corner of a
Xerox machine pointed at your desk. It is shar chi that symbolizes the cutting knife-
edge or a disapproving finger pointing at you.
Make sure that you can walk completely around your desk in a full circle. The
workload should not cramp you. You should have space to breathe!
Do not have clutter in your office. Desktops must be kept tidy and clutter free.
Avoid placing “In” and “Out” trays on your desk. Try to keep what is in use on your
desktop.
Avoid placing cactuses in your office as the needles of these plants are thought
to create negative shar chi. Shar or sha chi is stagnant or harmful energy.

78
In your office, never have the main door opening into your desk as it causes
you to be faced with unexpected situations to deal with. Never have a door jamming
against your desk, or your prosperity will always be blocked.
Do not place your desk in a room so that it is between two doors because this
causes chi to rush by and pass you by along with all of your good fortune. In other
words, the good energy walks in one door, right past you and out the back door!
Never set your desk at the top of a staircase as chi will roll down the stairs and
cause you loss of opportunity and wealth. If this is unavoidable, place a mirror above
the front door looking in and facing the staircase.
If people entering your business immediately face a wall and a long corridor,
try placing a hanging crystal in this area to allow good chi to accumulate. Also, place
mirrors here to direct the chi into your office.
Do not place large electric equipment, such as photocopy machine or
microwave near to the main door. These are considered to be "hot" items that cause
energy to dissipate. Heat causes the dispersal of good chi.
Do not place paper cutter or fax machines or any machine with a blade next to
the front door. The "cutting" energy can cause staff and customers to be unpleasant
and even possibly to back stab and fight each with other.
Do not place an empty vase next to the main door, as empty vessels suck good
chi trying to enter your place of business. If you have a vase make sure it is full of
flowers!
If you have candles in your office, light the wicks to make sure they are burnt,
even if you don't plan to light the candle. An unlit candle is bad feng shui as it
represents the limitations of possibility.
Place a fish tank or fishpond in the southwestern corner of your office. If this is
not possible consider building a pond in the southwestern sector outside your
building.
To enhance your wealth and prosperity, position your indoor water feature in the
southeast element of your home or office. For career luck, place it in the north. A
tabletop fountain made of bamboo or flat round stones is always good for this purpose.

79
If you have a company signboard or logo, it should be optimally placed in the
southeastern area, the southern area or the northern area of your home office.

Cheap interior design ideas come in many forms these days: from television
shows to magazines. The industry is trying to teach the consumer how to design
cheap. In the past, ideas such as cheap design would have left most interior designers
horrified. The industry of interior design has changed dramatically over the past few
years in order to better accommodate consumers.
In its early to mid stages of evolution, interior design was an industry of
prestige. Now, due to the demand for design for the average customer, designing on a
budget and cheap interior design has become a topic of much interest and acceptance.
Of course, you will always find the designers who insist that durability and style of a
design is identifiable with the brand name. The brand is associated with the contents
therein, which relates back to the price tag. Most everyday people do not relate to this
line of thinking. A secret tool to marvelous rooms, which are created using cheap
interior design ideas, is a good decision making. By purchasing some slightly more
expensive key items of furniture and by cost-cutting on the smaller items or
accessories you can save big bucks and still achieve the same look that is achieved in
other more expensive, brand name rooms.
The first question that pops into your mind here is “where do I buy the bargain
items?” It can be easily answered! Your hunt for cheap interior design ideas and items
can begin successfully at any bargain-type store. The stores and availability of items
in these stores will vary according to your locations. There are locally known
bargain-fairs or stores at which you can by slightly damaged or used items at a
fraction of the cost associated with similar store bought items. When buying at these
stores, be careful not to overspend. Many of us have a tendency to get overly
enthused and purchase items that are not good bargains or ones that we are not very
likely to use. Save your money for where it counts. You will find the perfect items in
the bargain shop that fit into your lifestyle and space. If you search and search for a
certain item and are unable to find it, try to improvise or select another similar item to

85
take its place. Cheap interior design ideas are abundant to the creative thinker who is
willing to overcome obstacles with unusual, cheap solutions.
Other places where you can find cheap interior design ideas are yard sales,
estate sales, and flea markets. Remember again when shopping in areas such as this
that it is easy to get caught up in the moment and overspend. Take your time and
comb the items carefully for objects of value. Many times in these types of sales the
physically larger items tend to be sold for more than cost value and the smaller
valuable items are looked over in haste. Cheap interior design ideas are not limited to
large items! If you find an accessory or such, especially if it is part of a group or
collection of items, buy it and use it to accentuate your other items.
Cheap interior design ideas are easy to find these days, you just have to know
the right places to look and the right items to purchase. Time is the essential element
in designing cheaply. Patience pays off in most any situation, including interior
design.

Where dreams begin
The Sparkles Hotel in Blackpool, England is a family hotel with difference.
What makes it stand out from all the other hotels in town, is that each room has its
own individual theme. There is the Cinderella lounge, where the chairs are silver
slippers and the Lost City of Atlantis dining room, especially designed to be the
perfect place for you to enjoy your fish and chips. Every detail in every room of the
hotel, even the bathrooms, has been carefully chosen to give it a fun and unique
atmosphere.
In fact so much work has gone into making each of the sixteen rooms special,
it is difficult to believe that just one year before it opened the hotel was a run-down
building with a huge hole in the roof. After replacing the roof and planning a whole
new interior, the owner, aptly named Mrs. Sparkle, began to totally transform the
place. She says, “It was really hard work redecorating each room, making the
curtains, painting the walls and restoring old furniture; but it was fun as well.” Now
that the work is finished and each room has its own make believe theme, she has no
doubt that it was definitely worth the effort.
Mrs. Sparkle always dreamt about living in a doll’s house and she is very
happy that she has been able to turn this fantasy into a reality. “Now I just want to be
able to provide a place where other people’s dreams can come true too,” she says.
There are certainly some amazing rooms to pick from. Guest can choose to
stay in the Teddy Bear’s Picnic room, the Barbie room, the Ruined Castle room, the
Dinosaur room, the Chocolate room or even the African den, which is designed to
make you feel like you are deep in the jungle complete with toy monkeys and animal
prints. All the rooms are stocked with toys and books so your children won’t get
bored, even if the English weather let’s you down.
In addition to the fantastic guest rooms, Sparkles has much to offer its young
visitors. Every time you book a room you can be sure that entertainment, most of

92
which is organised by Mrs. Sparkle herself, is included in the package. To give busy
parents a break in the morning, there is the games hour in the Sparkle’s den, a large
play area, and in the evening, puppet shows and story-telling mean that there is never
a dull moment.
Sparkles Hotel offers a fantasy world for the whole family to enjoy. So if you

My home is my castle
How would you like to live in a castle, a tree house or even underground? This
might not be as unusual as you think. It seems that these days more and more people
want to live somewhere special and out of the ordinary, and if they can’t buy what
they want they are quite prepared to build it from scratch.
For John Mew and his wife Josephine, their home really is their castle. They
have built their own English castle in the Sussex countryside. The building is brand
new with all the luxuries you would expect from a house that cost more than
$350,000 to build. However, when you first see it from the outside it would be easy
to think that you are looking at an ancient monument. The building has a lot of the
features of a traditional castle, including a keep, a moat and a drawbridge. “My
choice of house is somewhat eccentric and building it was very hard work, but we’ve
got the perfect place to live,” Mew says. Although some would say that the building
is impractical and may be cold in harsh British winters, he certainly has got a unique
and spacious home.
If you don’t look carefully, you might not even see the home that Jonathan and
Shanon Ridd built at all! That’s because the house is a converted underground water
tank. The only thing that can be seen from the surface is a door leading into the
hillside. “We’ve never wanted to live in an ordinary house,” Shanon says. “Living
below ground means that our home is quiet and very cosy – none of the usual
draughts. It doesn’t damage the local surroundings and has very low fuel bills. Some
of our friends find it dark and feel shut in when they first visit, but they soon get used
to it!”

In search of the perfect home
If an underground home doesn’t appeal to you, how about living in the tree
tops? Dan Garner, a tree surgeon from Gloucestershire, certainly thinks that this is the
way to go up in the world.
“When our family became short of space at home our solution was to build a
luxury tree house in the garden. The tree house is build into a spruce tree six metres
above the ground. It has one main room, a bedroom and a balcony running around
two sides.” Garner is so happy with this practical extension to his home that he thinks
he can convince more people of the benefits of living in the trees. He wants to set up
his own enterprise making more of the deluxe tree dwellings, saying, “Tree houses
are airy, secure and comfortable and the only disadvantage is that they might not be
suitable for people who suffer from hay fever or a fear of heights!”

97
Even people who live in more ordinary settings sometimes can’t resist doing
something to make them stand out from the crowd. One extreme example of this is
Bill Heines’ house in Headington, Oxfordshire. Until one morning in 1986, his house
looked much like all the others in his street, when suddenly overnight a 7.5 m long
fibreglass shark appeared to have crashed through the roof. The shark was a sculpture
by local artist John Buckley. At first some people complained that it might be
dangerous or that it spoilt the look of the neighbourhood, but engineers check that the
sculpture was safe and the “Headington shark” has become a well-known and popular
landmark. It seems that no matter where you live, you can always do something to
make sure your house says something to about who you are.

Digging it down under
The Harper family live in a large, comfortable home. Like many other houses,
it has all modern conveniences. Unlike many other houses, it has no windows. The
Harpers live in Coober Pedy, Australia, where two thirds of the population live
underground.
Coober Pedy is an opal-mining town in the Australian desert. Above ground,
the town does not look very welcoming. The earth is red and dry under the scorching
sun. There is a small number of shops and offices. Underground, however, it’s a very
different story. There are shops, hotels, restaurants and churches, all built
underground to escape from the extreme temperatures and violent dust storms of the
desert.
The underground dwellings range from dugouts to luxurious caverns with
beautiful furniture. The Harper family home has 3 spacious bedrooms and a large
living room. The Harper children, Tom and Wendy, spend most of their time in the
games room or swimming pool! The house is clean and comfortable and the Harpers
enjoy entertaining guests there.

100
The Harper’s beautiful home is a result of their own hard work, as it was once
just a small, two-room cave home. “The advantage of living underground is that, if
you need another room, you just dig it!” says Mr. Harper. “And the advantage of
living in an opal-mining town is that you often find opals while you are extending
your house!” Besides, children can make as much noise as they want, because the
walls are soundproof.
The underground homes at Coober Pedy offer an interesting way of life, as
well as peace and quiet and relief from the desert sun. The Harper family are certainly
content. “Life is so much simpler underground,” says Wendy. “I can’t imagine living
anywhere else.”
