Consortium

To achieve its ambitious goals, the IoT Lab consortium

gathers together 7 international academic and research
partners and one SME bringing complementary expertise
and several FIRE-related research infrastructures: CTI
(Hobnet), University of Geneva (WISEBED and Hobnet),
Mandat International (Hobnet and EAR-IT) and the University
of Surrey (Smart Santanders).

Welcome to IoT Lab Objectives Crowd-Sourcing Driven
IoT Lab in a nutshell Research
IoT Lab is a European Research project which aims IoT Lab will research and develop: IoT lab intends to explore “Crowdsourcing-driven
at  researching the potential of crowdsourcing to research” as a new model in which the research can
extend IoT testbed infrastructure for multidisciplinary be initiated, guided and assessed by the crowd. It will
experiments with more end-user interactions. 1. Crowdsourcing mechanisms and tools  to compare it to other models. In this model, the crowd is
enable testbeds to use third party resources (smart invited to:
Addressed topics: phones) and interact with the distributed users
• Submit research topics
through a system that protects the user privacy
• Crowdsourcing mechanisms and tools and provides the identity management, security, • Assess and rank proposed research topics
• “Crowdsourcing-driven research” reputations, mechanisms and data ownership.
• Test and assess research results
• Virtualization of crowdsourcing and testbeds • Propose adaptations and improvements
2. Virtualization  of crowdsourcing and testbed
• Ubiquitous Interconnection and Cloudification  components facilitating the integration and
of testbeds. interaction with heterogeneous components,
including physical, mobile and virtual ones.
• Testbed as a Service platform.
• Multidisciplinary experiments. 3. Ubiquitous Interconnection and Cloudification of
• End-user and societal value creation the testbeds resources to provide an on-line platform
of Testbed as a Service (TBaaS) with user driven
functionalities and interfaces. IPv6 and network
virtualisation potential to interconnect heterogenous
Architecture and distributed resources will be explored.

4. End-user and societal value by analyzing the

potential of end-users and crowdsourcing participants
and researching their interests, drivers, and barriers
to adoption, in order to propose an optimized model
for end-user adoption and societal value creation.

5. “Crowdsourcing-driven research”  as Mision

a new model in which the research can be
initiated, guided and assessed by the crowd.
• Extend test beds with crowd sourcing for richer
and more distributed experiments
6. Economic dimension of crowdsourcing testbed,
by analyzing the potential markets and business • Bring researches and end-users together, with
models in order to optimize the exploitation, costs, pervasive / ubiquitous experiments and closer
profitability and economic sustainability of such testbeds. interactions with the society
Tools for future experiments will also be developed.
• Support multidisciplinary experiments
7. Performing multidisciplinary experiments, • Increase test bed economic sustainability
including end-user driven experiments through
IoT Lab will be promoted through the research community, crowdsourcing, to assess the added value of such • A new approach for experimentation with “privacy
social networks and forums such as ITU. approach. friendly” crowdsourcing technologies
