Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter shows the systematic methods that will be done in order to make this

research a reality.

Research Design

In order to see the general picture of the effects of super typhoon Yolanda to the

mentality of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students towards

typhoons, phenomenological research design will be used. As a phenomenological study,

data will be gathered from a variety of sources and by using several different methods (e.g.

observations & interviews). The research may also continue for an extended period of time,

so processes and developments can be studied as they happen. The researchers decided to

use this design for they will be in an in-depth investigation of a specific group which is the

STEM students of Leyte National High School (LNHS). The researchers will use a

naturalistic approach for this study because the study will be conducted in the respondents’

natural environment.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at Leyte National High School (LNHS) at the Lino

Gonzaga Ave 50-D , Downtown, Tacloban City, Leyte. The researchers chose to conduct

their study in Leyte National High School for this school has a variety of students from

different provinces.

Sample or the Respondents

In choosing the sample or the respondents for this study, the researchers will be using

purposive sampling. This is because only STEM students will be chosen as respondents for

this study. Specifically, the respondents for this study will be students coming from both

grade 11 and 12 under the STEM curriculum of Leyte National High School. The researchers

will use purposive sampling beacuse the respondents, who experienced typhoon Yolanda,

will be chosen only from STEM.

Research Instruments

In this study, the researchers will use a structured interview so that the data can be

easily gathered. In view of the researcher’s readings, past studies, professional literature,

published and unpublished thesis relevant to the study, the draft of the questionaire for the

interview will be drawn out. In preparing the research instrument, the researchers will ensure

that the requirements in designing a good data collection instrument is considered. The

researchers will also be using cameras and recorders for the interviews. They will also be

using field notes that will be recorded by the researchers during interviews and observations.

12
With the help of these instruments, evidences will be provided that will help the researchers

understand or give meaning to data that they will be able to gather.

Data Collection Method

The resarchers will conduct their interviews during vacant periods in order to avoid

disruption of classes. They will personally administer the research instruments and explain

the significance of the study to the respondents properly. The respondents will be given

enough time to answer the questions form the interview. After the interviews been done, the

results will be carefully recorded. These data will be the basis of analysis and interpretation.

Data Analysis Procedure

In order to determine the effects of super typhoon Yolanda to the mentality of

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students towards typhoons, the

responses to the questionnaire by the STEM students will be analyzed with the data

requirements of the study. The researchers will carefully analyze the responses of the

respondents to see if there is a certain pattern to their responses. The researchers will use

thematic analysis to full understand the response of the respondents. With this type of

analysis, patterns or themes in the response of the respondents will be pinpointed and

emphasized.
