Why fish farming ( Biofloc )
 Population growth is challenging our ability to produce sufficient quantities of protein

to match expected population increases.

• Aquaculture is the only alternative to continued depletion of natural fisheries because

we have reached capacity and increases in capture fishing are not expected.

• Aquaculture must double within the next 15 years in order to keep pace with demands

for food resulting from population growth.

• Farmed fish is a major way to increase protein.

 Aquaculture must double within the next 15 years in order to keep pace with demands

for food resulting from population growth.

• Farmed fish is a major way to increase protein.

• Failures in aquaculture are most often linked to unsustainable development, poor

practices and improper farm management.

What we can achieve?

 Reduce poverty by creating employment opportunities.

• Increase the range of choices in protein sources.

• Encourage sustainable production practices and skills among trainees.

• Improve business practices tailored to local settings.

List of things required

 One labor
 Source of water (borehole, river, tap water etc.)
 Hatchery (tanks, WRS, aerators, oxygen cylinders etc.)
 Tanks (6 Radius, 4 Ft deep and 8 tanks.)
 Feed production unit with store
 Store (nets, water pumps, bowls, water quality kits, weighing balances, microscope etc. etc.)
 Source of power supply (PHCN, generator)
 Aeration system

Processes involved in fish farming
management
 Water management - Important for Water quality parameters and desirable concentrations for
fish growth

 Tank management –

o Temperature: 23 – 35 Degree Celsius

o Transparency: 20 – 50cm
o pH: 6.5 – 9 units
o Dissolved oxygen (DO): > 5mg/lit
o Nitrate: <10mg/lit
o Nitrite: < 0.1 mg/lit
o Ammonia: 0.05mg/lit
o Phosphate
o Free chlorine: < 0.01mg/lit
o Conductivity, < 350 µScm-1
o Colour: non-intense green/dark green colour
o Heavy metals: copper < 1.0; lead < 0.1; chromium < 0.05; zinc < 0.5mg/lit etc.
o Faecal coiliforms: < 1000 cells/100ml of water

 Feed and feeding management-

o Feed is crucial to success of fish farming – takes % of operating costs

o Floating vs sinking feed
o Intensive vs semi-intensive vs extensive operation
o Feed ingredients should be free from contaminants. Purchase from reputable dealers
o The nutrient requirements of the cultured fish species should be taken into account
during feed formulation
o Feed should be purchased fresh and stored under good hygienic conditions at the right
temperature, in air tight containers etc.) for a few months.
o Avoid overfeeding and underfeeding: Feeding frequency; feeding amount – feed at 5%
of fish body weight which is determined through sampling; feeding time (stick to a
particular time schedule); particle size- fish fry of wt. <0.1g, mm feed; fry <0.25g, mm
feed; fry of wt. 1g, 1.5mm feed. Adjust feeding regime as fish grows
o Medicated feed should be used to control of a specific disease(s)

 Fish health management

o Regular observation for any abnormality (sluggish fish movement, skin de-colouration,
broken head etc.)
o Random sampling and observation for clinical signs
o Remove dead fish and fish with any abnormality

2
o Disinfect the equipment’s in a saturated salt bath
o Cover the culture facilities with nets and fences
o Handle fish with minimum stress
o Provide nutritionally balanced diet and a correct feeding regime
o Restrict the entrance of visitors and vehicles
o Prevent the entrance of predators (Birds, snakes, wild fish etc.)
o Prepare periodic fish health report

 Harvesting and marketing

o Ready market for harvested fish – advertise before harvest if necessary

o Partial or total harvest
o Time of harvest – early morning (b/4 12 noon)
o Sorting of harvested fish, counting and weighing
o Post-Harvest Management and Processing – This is very important because it prepares
the products for sale after harvesting and any laxity can lead to heavy losses. Processing
involves drying, salting, fermenting, freezing etc.
o Fresh fish deteriorate in quality very quickly once they are harvested so sell immediately
or freeze
o Try and understand opportunities to sell, barter or trade them is important.
o Understanding customer tastes, seasonal trends and cultural norms is important.
o Keep live fish ready to sell in small enclosures so that customers will be attended to
immediately

 Record keeping

o Record keeping is a very important activity for successful farm management and
involves keeping records on:
o Culture Activities – Brood stock and back up stocks; nursery and grow out; holding, sales
and packing area; date of harvesting; stocking density and ratio, mortality, survival rates
and discards for each tank; target and actual production records; daily, weekly, monthly
productions; feeding records and growth rates; water quality parameters etc.
o Disease problems – date of occurrence of disease, type of the disease, disease
symptoms, severity, applied treatments and success of the treatments etc.
o Records on environmental parameters – rainfall, temperature, wind, humidity and
natural disasters.
o Management activities – Cash book, inventory records, stock book and ledger should be
maintained (Sales records, expenses) for cost analysis.

 Labour management

Market and Understanding
1. Assured back ( Sanjay )
2. B2C
3. B2B

Target Segment-
New age couple and mothers who wants to re assure what they are feeding to their family and most
importantly their children. Mostly everyone is going to be knowledgeable one in the market they will
check and calculate the calories they are feeding to their child.

Opportunity-
Fish as portrayed in the market is seriously not good for the market that’s why 60 % of the
production we export to US and Africa.
We need to refresh the fish industry and make it another living opportunity for people looking for
jobs. Fish was never marketed properly due to its drawback like

 Cost of the fish

 Food odor
 Bones not safe for kids
 Question on quality and freshness
 Availability
 Limited Recipe
 After food smell
 Unhygienic Market

We have to tackle 80 % of the problems mentioned above to promote Fish

Almost 60 % of Indian people are non-vegetarian and they have only option like chicken and egg (
commonly) Huge market gap we can see here. There is market need but there is less supply to the
common Indian market. Healthy food is right of everyone we will fill up the nutritional gap in today’s
generation.

Missing Nutrients from Daily routine –

1) Omega 3

2) Vitamin D

3) High Quality protein

4) Iodine

4
Scalability and Future
Post first or second harvest we will be
dedicated to move to the customer directly
to control the pricing.

Reaching to customer will allows us to get real

time feedback on the product and the
services.

Post one year we will try to invest our time

and effort to start veggies or plantation.

Veggies and Fish will be avialbale in the market

Post 2 years we can think of putting our time

and money to open our own Fish Truck. Point
of sell
•We can also open a food truck
