I. INSTRUCTION. Get into the link below; observe the video as many
times as you need, then answer the questions below.

1. What are the differences between stressed and distressed?

Stress syllables or words are pronounced longer, louder, and
at a higher pitch than de-stress syllables or words
2. What happens if you use your language intonation when you
speak English?
Indicaciones/Instrucciones It may create confusion for the listener.
3. What word do we stressed? What does it mean? Explain.
We stress content words such as nouns, main verbs,
adjectives, adverbs, interjections, Wh-words, negatives. Since
stressed words are the ones which carry meaning in the
sentence, we can still understand the message, despite the
incorrect use or even the lack of grammar.
4. What do we distressed? What does it mean? Explain.
Function words are usually the ones that are distressed. These
kinds of words are related to the grammar or structure in the
sentence. Function words include prepositions, pronouns,
articles, conjunctions, and auxiliary verbs.

the ði:  ðǝ
for fɔ:  fǝ
can kæn  kǝn
him hɪm  ɪm
In order to distress the function words, different phonological
processes are used.
5. How do we create new rhythm in English? Explain.
By stressing some words and distressing others. By doing this
we can maintain the rhythm in the sentence.
6. Give examples of creating new rhythm in English?
I looked in the car but I didn’t see my keys.
I don’t like tea unless it has milk.
Even though the sentences above have a different number of
words, they last the same time when pronounced. This
happens because both of them have four stressed words.
