ABSTRACT

The Aggregates are raw materials in asphalt concrete and Portland cement concrete mixes used in the
construction of roads and highways. Thus, aggregates are subjected to crushing and abrasive wear
during the manufacture. Aggregate abrasion characteristics are important because the constituent
aggregate in hot mix asphalt must resist crushing, degradation and disintegration in order to produce
high quality hot mix asphalt. The Los Angeles abrasion test on aggregates is the measure of aggregate
toughness and abrasion resistance such as crushing, degradation and disintegration. This test is
performed according to ASTM C131 – 06, standard test method for resistance to degradation of small-
size coarse aggregate by abrasion and impact in the Los Angeles machine

The laboratory experiment aims to determine the resistance to abrasion of the coarse aggregates, to
determine the Los Angeles abrasion value and to find the suitability of aggregates for use in road
construction.

The sample coarse aggregates was been sieve and the 5000g of coarse aggregates, combination of
2500g retained on 12.5mm sieve and another 2500g retained on 9.5mm sieve. The 5000g of coarse
aggregates was put in the Los Angeles Abrasion machine and a charge which consists of eleven (11)
steel balls with average diameter of approximately 46.8 mm and each weighing between 390 and 445
grams. Aggregates resistance against abrasion is expressed as Los Angeles Abrasion value (LAV), which
is the percentage of fines passing the 1.7mm sieve after a specified number of revolutions of the drum at
specified speed.

For an aggregate to perform satisfactory in pavement, it must be sufficiently hard to resist the abrasive
effect of traffic over long period of time. The soft aggregates will be quickly ground to dust, whilst the hard
aggregates are quite resistant to crushing effect.

PROCEDURE

1. Wash the coarse aggregate test sample

and oven-dry at 110+- 5 °C to constant mass.

2. Separate the aggregates into individual size

fractions using standard sieves and recombine
to the grading according to Table 7.2.
Record the mass to the nearest 1g.

3. Place the test sample and the charge in the

Los Angeles testing machine.

4. Rotate the machine at a speed of 30 to

33 rpm for 500 revolutions.

5. Discharge the material from the L.A.

abrasion machine and separate the
sample on a No.12 (1.70mm) sieve.

6. Weigh the material coarser than the

No.12 sieve and record this as the
final weight.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA AND RESULT

In this experiment we test the gravel using the Los Angeles Abrasion, from the sample of 5000 grams of
gravel. The L.A. abrasion test measures the degradation of a coarse aggregate sample that is placed in a
rotating drum with steel spheres . As the drum rotates the aggregate degrades by abrasion and impact
with other aggregate particles and the steel spheres (called the “charge”). Once the test is complete, the
calculated mass of aggregate that has broken apart to smaller sizes is expressed as a percentage of the
total mass of aggregate. Therefore, lower L.A. abrasion loss values indicate aggregate that is tougher
and more resistant to abrasion. For our experiment we placed a 11 steel balls to the rotating drum and
5000 grams of gravel and after 500 rotate the mass of the gravel is 3907 grams using 12.5 and 19 sieve
and the Los Angeles Abrasion Value, % is 28%.

CONCLUSION

TABULATION OF DATA AND RESULT

COMPUTATION

LAV = M1 – M2 (100)
M2

Where:
M1 = 5000g
M2= 3907g

LAV = 5000 - 3907 (100)

3907

LAV = 27.9 or 28%
