2.0 Review of Related Literature and Studies

Car Rental System Literature Review Paper Over the last 3 years, the car rental industry has come
an extraordinary long way in development and growth. This particular industry continues to grow
and improve from year to year. The old generations have come from a manual booking talking
person to person you always to find the car rental manually which is wasting a lot of time. It's still
difficult to lease a car in the Philippines. There are 3 major issues. The first issue is finding a car
hire company. The big ones like Hertz, Avis or Europcar have only few places and are all in the
mega-cities.

Unlike other service industries, a highly concentrated car rental service provides new
players in the sector with a cost disadvantage due to high input costs and weak economies of scale
at the same time. This industry has become more competitive and a big part of the competition
comes from two main sources within the market chain, which are segments of enterprise and
leisure. The history of rental cars in Germany can be traced back to the early 20th century, when
Martin Sixt started offering luxury cars for hire in 1912, often including a driver. In 1918, with a
fleet of 12 Model T Fords, Walter Jacobs began the first rental car company in the United States.
He sold his business to John Hertz in 1923 who gave the firm the name Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System.

The idea of people shopping online is something that many people in the 21st century is
embracing. Advances in technological innovations have simplified human life and nowadays many
people fancy doing most activities using their electronic devices by clicking on buttons. Likewise,
the mobile car rental system is an online facility that can book cars online in just a few clicks. A
rental car system receives a rental order specifying the rental car model and the delivery location
at which the user wishes to deliver the rental car. The rental car agency delivers the specified rental
car to the specified location and leaves the rental car without the user being in attendance. This
framework is built using JSP as the language of programming, and the oracle as the database.
Designs that cover the system architecture, user interfaces, and database design had been created
to build the real system. It is hoped that this system will help the Cars Online Company handle the
management of car rental.

2.1 Technical Background

The project background of the project is to develop an Online Car Rental System.
This Online Car Rental System is combined of the reservation and informational system.
Hence, this system will be focusing on the customers who would like to reserve cars and
travel individually. It also maintains the information about the customer details, vehicle
details, driver details, booking details and transaction details of the customer.

2.2 Related Literature

2.2.1 Local Literature

2.2.1.1

Car rental hire in the Philippines is popular among inbound tourists looking to
travel around the city and to and from provinces freely and with the privacy of driving
themselves; this is common for both domestic travelers as well as for business trips. In
terms of leisure and tour activities, car rental to be used during the tour is often included in
the travel package. However, in reaching another town or city, public transportation such
as by bus is still commonly used by domestic passengers, mainly because it is usually the
cheaper option and commuting is relatively easy for Filipinos as the local mode of
transportation ranges from buses to tricycles which can drop passengers off to a specific
destination.

This report was commissioned on us to investigate and relate different functional,

operational and technical requirement of a dedicated web application for online car rental
system. This System will facilitate the functioning of web-based Rental Car store. Each
type of car should have a different rental fee per day. Rental fee depends on number of
days, brand and how fast the car runs. The system should have the following
functionalities: Rent: The system equipped to answer Customer's inquiries about the
availability and rental fee of various "types" of cars for certain dates in the future. When
the customer makes a decision about the “type “of car and the dates, the system should be
able to “Reserve” or “Earmark” the requested type of the car for requested dates. The
costumer should be given a “Confirmation Number”.

2.2.1.3

Rental car industry is a multimillion industry which needs proper management for
it to bear good returns. Unlike other service industries, the car rental service is highly
consolidated which gives new players into the business a cost disadvantage incurred from
the high input cost and low economies of scale at the same time. This industry has become
more competitive and a big chunk of the competition comes from two main sources within
the market chain, these are leisure and corporate segments. The major players in the market
have established networks of collaboration and deals with majority of the leisure segments
and corporate leaving only a smaller percentage for other smaller car rental companies. But
that does not rule out the possibility of competition among the major players.

2.2.1.4

Renting a car in the Philippines is still difficult. There are three major problems. The first
problem is to find a car rental company. The big ones like Hertz, Avis or Europcar have only few
locations and they are all in the mega-cities. There are lots of small companies in Metro Manila,
Cebu City, Davao and Angeles City. But their service and the condition of their vehicles are not
very trustworthy. They can be found in the classified ads of the local newspapers. Problem number
two is that you have to bring back the car to your point of departure. Because of the over 7000
islands of the Philippines, you cannot rent a car in Manila and give it back in Davao. The costs of
returning the car would be much too high. And when you found a car, problem number three will
hit you. You will encounter a completely new style of driving and very strange traffic rules.

2.2.1.5

The history of rental cars can be traced back to the early 20th century in Germany, when
in 1912, Martin Sixt began to offer luxury cars for hire, often including a driver. In 1918, Walter
Jacobs began the first rental car business in the United States with a fleet of 12 Model T Fords. In
1923, he sold his business to John Hertz, who gave the company the name Hertz Drive-Ur-Self
System. This company in turn was acquired by General Motors in 1926, and today, Hertz is the
largest airport general-use car rental brand in the world.

This study will introduce a special kind of logistics management problem which exists in
the car rental industry. Revenue management conception has been used for reference in the car
rental industry to develop booking, pricing and inventory strategies. In order to get a high degree
of customer satisfaction and optimize vehicle fleet utilization, logistics managers in the car rental
business approximately adopt three decision-making steps: namely, pool segmentation, strategic
fleet planning and tactical fleet planning. Optimizing resource deployment and reducing the
logistics cost are the targets of logistics management in enterprise. We will review the existing
literature on the car rental logistics problem and identify some gaps in current research. This sort
of research is prospective and useful for future development of the car rental industry.

Asian countries are facing major air pollution problems due to rapid economic growth,
urbanization and motorization. Mortality and respiratory diseases caused by air pollution are
believed to be endemic in major cities of these countries. Regulations and standards are the first
requirement for reducing emissions from both fixed and mobile sources. This paper emphasizes
monitoring problems such as vehicle registration systems, inspection and maintenance (I/M)
systems and fuel quality monitoring systems for vehicles in use. Monitoring problems in
developing countries share similar characteristics such as a weakness in government initiatives and
inadequate operation of government agencies, which results from a lack of human resources and
availability of adequate facilities. Finally, this paper proposes a method to assure air quality
improvements under the different shares of emission regulations in these Asian countries and
introduces an example of an evaluation method based on a policy survey to improve air quality.
