CRUCIFIXION (on wood

canvas):
Thru ancient beliefs

I noticed that almost all

sculptures that are displayed at
the Museo de Intramuros is
related to religion. I think it was
mainly because of the Spaniards’
influence of Christianity in early
times. So far, out of all the
museums I’ve been to, this was
the hardest for me to pick this
type of art that I like. Also, the
statues there are very limited since it is only a small museum. Religion themed is very common even
nowadays because of the widespread of Catholic Christian, so it wasn’t new to me. So instead, I
looked into its meaning, representation and uniqueness despite a common theme. I noticed this
carved sculpture is very intriguing that made me think what is the meaning behind it.

When I read the description it said “A rare portrayal of the Holy Trinity showing God the
Father seated wearing both crown and papal tiara.” This was the detail that captured my interest the
most. I didn’t see anything that was alike the way it was carved. Then, I noticed that the meaning
behind is a summarization of beliefs since early times that is still practiced up to now. It showed an
image of God the Father, which I think is very controversial in a way no one knows what our God the
father looks like but rather it symbolized using the crown and a holy papal tiara. The Holy Trinity is
placed in a triangular way in a low key manner which is a good representation. Another detail that
amazed me is Adam’s skull depicted beneath Jesus’ cross. It showed the sins of the people are
rested beneath the cross of the Lord because of the sacrifice he made, which impressed me in a
way the audience have to think deep on what that detail is about. The details of the people stated,
John and Mary was done in a professional manner which impressed me because I know it is Above
all holy people and symbols is the holy spirit that showed great power amongst all. The way all
representations were placed is very accurate and a great way of summarizing what Catholics
believed in a way it is understandable once the audience think about it. I didn’t think of it as a
complicated one but rather a complex variety of symbols that is interconnected to form a sculpture
that has meaning, uniqueness and beauty within it.

Overall it wasn’t new in my eyes but the way it was portrayed made me peak interest at the said
sculpture. Through this activity, I realized that despite common themes, every art really has its own
uniqueness. Its a way of portrayal by the artist and understanding of the audience that made every
art have its property of uniqueness. In a way, the audience have to deep dig down the meaning
behind every small to big details of the said art. Overall, I realized my way of seeing art and it is
through its meaning.
