Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Study habit is buying out a dedicated scheduled and un-interrupted time to apply

one’s self to the task of learning. Without it, one does not grow and becomes self –

limiting in life. Study habits tell a person that how much he will learn and how far he

wants to go, and how much he wants to earn. These all could be decided with the help

of one’s study habits, throughout the life. Stella and Purtshothaman (1993) opined that

the researchers have analyzed the pupil’s achievement with reference to the

classification high, average and low achievers, in this conventional classification, the

point of reference in the average score of group or a standard norm, but study habits

differ from person to person , hence in an attempt to help the learners progress by

developing suitable study habits, we need a different set of parameters that takes into

account of the individual capabilities.

According to Palani (2012) reading habit is an essential and important aspect for

creating a literate society in this world. It shapes the personality of individuals and it

helps them to develop proper thinking methods, and creates new ideas. However, the

developments in the Mass Media had continued to influence interest in reading books,

magazines and journals, among others. Issa et al. (2012) recommended that everyday

reading activities in which students engage influence their studying skills and

subsequent academic performance. There is a general sense in which one appreciates

the link between good habits of reading and the academic performance of students

generally. Deavers (2000)

1
believed that reading is a process of thinking, evaluation, judging, imaging

reasoning and problem solving. Reading is an essential tool for knowledge transfer and

the habit of reading an academic activity that increases skill in reading strategies. To

know about the world and its environment a child helps himself through reading book,

newspapers and other magazines. Once the child has been taught to read and has

developed the love for books, he can explore for himself the wealth of human

experiences and knowledge through reading. Children, who miss the opportunity of

getting in touch with books in their early stages of life, find it hard to acquire good

reading habits in their years.

Background of the study

Study habits is the habitual practices one uses to help them study and learn.

Good study habits can help students achieve and/or maintain good grades .A habit is a

settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up. Alex

(2011) described a habit as something that is done on scheduled, regular and planned

basis that is not relegated to a second place or optional place in one’s life. It was further

stated that a habit is what is simply done, no reservation, no excuses and no

exceptions. Thus, the habit formed can be improved upon by constant practice; and it is

very hard to give up a habit once it is formed. According to Alex (2011) to study is to

buy out the time and dedicate self to the application and task of study, and to become

engrossed in a process of learning, practice, enlightenment and education of one’s self.

2
Therefore, study habit can be derived from the above as buying out a dedicated

schedule and uninterrupted time to apply one’s self to the task of learning. Study habit

is an action such as reading, taking notes, holding study groups which the students

perform regularly and habitually in order to accomplish the task of learning. Study

habits can be described as effective or ineffective depending upon whether or not they

serve the students well. Parents can certainly play a major role in providing the

encouragement, environment, and materials necessary for successful studying to take

place at home. However, at school, library provides a quiet, well-lit study place and

environment that is conducive to mental concentration.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the Usual Study habits and preparations for the

test of the elementary students of Saint Alexius College. Specifically, it answers the

following questions:

1. When do they study for the test?

2. What environment do they prefer when studying?

3. What mode do they use in taking and processing info?

4. What strategies do they use to boost their selves in studying?

5. what result are they aiming?

3
Significance of the Study

The findings of the study provide the habit and preparation of Elementary

students of St. Alexius College towards studying. Furthermore, this research can

contribute new knowledge. The results of the study would be beneficial to the following:

To the students this study may serve as awareness to them towards the usual habits

when studying. This study will also give learnings about what can they possibly do, to

have better and easier way when studying.

To the teachers this study would help the teachers to guide the students on how will

make it easier for them to study. They will also know the attributes of the students

towards their habits when studying.

To the Parents this study could help the parents to have more elaborative ways when

helping their children on studying. They will also know what are the habitual ways on

how their children cope with their study.

To the future researchers the result of this study may become their guide when doing

a quantitative research. This study may provide more information for them to use a

reference.

4
Scope and Delimitation

The study will investigate the usual study habits and preparation of elementary

pupils. The study will determine what kind of habits and preparation do the pupils do

before examination or quizzes . This study will benefit and give knowledge to other

pupils on how to improve their study habits. The result of this study will give other pupils

knowledge or give them certain idea on what is the effect of having a good study habits

and how it can help them to be more efficient and to be more productive to their study

The study will be delimitate only to the elementary pupils who are enrolled in St.

Alexius during school year 2019- 2020. The extraneous variable which might affect are

variable which adequately are not under our control The schedule for survey depends

on the availability of the respondents. The answers accumulated for this study was kept

confidential.

Review of Related Literature

This section provides an overview of previous articles, journals, dissertations,

and the like on knowledge sharing and internet. The researchers presented analyzed

literature to put this study into context and to also show background knowledge of

discussed topics.

Study Habits

Study habits act as another variable connected with distance learners’

performances. Study habits reflect students’ usual act of studying and also call forth and

serve to direct the learner’s cognitive processes during learning. Study habits includes a

variety of activities: time management, setting appropriate goals, choosing an

appropriate study environment, using appropriate note-taking strategies, choosing main

ideas, and organization (Proctor et al., 2006).

Study habit is the pattern of behaviour adopted by students in the pursuit of their

studies that serves as the vehicle of learning. It is the degree to which the student

engages in regular acts of studying that are characterized by appropriate studying

routines (e.g. reviews of material, frequency of studying sessions, etc.) occurring in an

environment that is conducive to studying. Study attitudes, on the other hand, refers to a

student’s positive attitude toward the specific act of studying and the student’s

acceptance and approval of the broader goals of college education (Crede and Kuncel,

2008)

7
A student who has good study skills may carry out the same learning task. A

student with poor study skills mat carry out the same learning task, but may use

inapprpriate techniques in an ineffective mannner.(Lyle,2006)

Effective strategies

Eysenck (1995) found that students who are more extraverted prefer to study in

the library near other students, and like to have their study punctuated with frequent

breaks and opportunities to socialize. On the other hand, some individuals may prefer a

set time and a set place (such as at a desk) where they can absorb themselves in study

without distraction.

Importance of effective strategies and attitudes on academic performance, some

researchers have proposed strategies that will help students develop effective study

habits and attitudes. For example, the study of Demir et al. (2012), which examined the

effect of development of efficient studying skills curriculum on academic achievements

and studying skills of learners, found that students can acquire efficient studying skills

by means of curriculum for developing efficient studying skills. The students were able

to organize the study environment and use specific methods effectively, such as

efficient reading, listening lectures, note-taking, efficient writing and doing homework. It

further revealed that those students where the curriculum was implemented have

increased academic achievement as compared to the group of students on which the

curriculum was not implemented.

8
Preparation

Adeninyi (2011) maintains that good test preparation allows students to study

independently at home and aspire for higher educational career. The formation of good

preparation for test level further serves as the basis for students’ performance in

external examinations

The traditional student success curriculum is founded in behaviorist philosophy

that “learning is any…permanent change in behavior which is the result of experience.”

(Jarvis, Holford, and Griffen, 1998, p. 21) The experience of the student success course

is intended to modify or enhance the students’ behavior by imparting the skills that they

need to enhance success: notetaking, time management, critical reading etc.

Depending on the delivery method, this approach also may reinforce the

traditional roles of student and instructor, which invests the instructor’s methods as the

“right” ones and rewards those that conform to the strategies defined in the curriculum.

When positive outcomes result with appropriate choices, positive reinforcement may

also be used to encourage the change in the learner’s behavior. However, some

instructors might also present the same material within the context of problem-based

learning situations, which reinforces the learner’s freedom and choice, thereby

promoting self-efficacy.

9
Definition of Terms

The following are the important terms found in the study are defined operationally

by the researchers.

Study habits are the behaviours used when preparing for tests or learning academic

material. The action or process of making ready or being made ready for use or

consideration.

Preparation is the process of making something ready or of becoming ready for

something. The action or process of making ready or being made ready for use or

consideration. Also, the action of making something ready for use of getting ready for

test.

Locale of the Study

This study will be conducted in Saint Alexius College located in Gen. San. Drive,

City of Koronadal, in the province of South Cotabato. St. Alexius College is a private

educational institution in Koronodal City, South Cotabato. The school traces its roots

to The Doctors' Clinic & Hospital, Inc. founded by Dr. Arturo Pasaporte Pingoy, Sr. and

Dr. Amparo Yusay-Pingoy in 1961. Ten years later, the couple established The Doctors’

Clinic & Hospital School of Midwifery. As years passed, the school offered more

bachelor's degree courses and added technical and short-term courses to the list of

their programs. The academic institution renamed itself twice: The Doctors’ Clinic &

Hospital School Foundation, Inc. in 1994 and St. Alexius College in 2009.

The college offers various undergraduate programs that are divided into four

departments: Nursing & Allied Health, Business Education & Management, Arts and

Sciences, and Aviation. The school also provides TESDA courses, like Cookery, Front

Office Services, and Health Care Services, all of which lead to a National Certificate

(NC). Aside from these programs, St. Alexius College also has an Integrated School

Department and a Senior High School department. The SHS department has available

strands from the Academic and the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) tracks.

Research Respondents

In conducting a study, The researcher utilize the sampling called the systematic

random sampling. The researcher will give questionnaire to the students and survey

about the researcher study. The respondents will be limited by 100 respondents only

and the respondents will be the elementary students of Saint Alexius College.

Research Instruments

The researchers used survey questionnaires to gather information and data

about the chosen topic. The questions are self-made by the researchers that dealth with

generating information that will answer to the stated problem above mentioned. The

questionnaire that have been made was a checklist survey questionnaire that intended

to know the level of the respondents of the community. The checklist survey

questionnaire have been printed on a half-page of long bond paper and it has been

approved and validated by an expert in the field of research.

The questionnaires were consisting of statements that were answered by the

elementary students. The researchers used closed-ended questions limiting the

responses to the scope of the study.

Data Collection Procedure

In order to meet the goals of the study, the researchers will follow the protocol in

collecting the data. Before conducting the survey, the researchers will provide a letter of

permission. The researchers wrote another letter for the respondents asking for their

15
permission to let the researchers conduct a survey and in order to distribute the

questionnaires. The survey questionnaires were distributed to the elementary students

only. After the respondents finish answering the survey questionnaires, collection of

data will follow. The survey questionnaires are use to gather data to determine the usual

study habits and preparation of the elementary students of Saint Alexius.
