“THE USE OF CELL PHONES DURING CLASS HOURS: IT`S ADVANTAGE AND

DISADVANTAGE TO LEARNINGS OF SHS STUDENTS”

I: INTRODUCTION

Through the yers, cell phones models haave evovlved from it`s basic capacity of

texting and calling to being internet able. It is widely used and becoming increasingly

popular. Cellphones comes in many size and weight and are easy to carry. Offering fast

and convenience service of communication. Nowadays, cell phones have been great part

of peopl`s lives. With cell phone in our hands, we can keep in touch with whoever we

want. Many high school students, have cell phones. As we know, 21st century is a

golden age of information and communication technology. Cell phone is one of the

quickest tools for us to exchange information. Indeed, cell phones have penetrated into

every corner of our lives, regardless of work and life.

Aside of advantages of cell phones, it has also disadvantages to the student or in

the class. Examples, cell phones could be:

DISTRACTION- the most obvious reason is that cell phones can be a distraction

for the students. Whether they`re taking selfies or texting in the class, cell phones can be

very detrimental to a students`s ability to pay attention in the class. It can be very

tempting to check your social media sites during instead of listening to a lecture.
INTERRUPTIONS- not only can cell phone cause distraction for individual

students in class, but they can also interrupt the entire class. The ringing, beeping, or

buzzing cell phones can disrupt a test, lectur, or even in the studey period. You can`t

count on every student to make sure the cell phone is on silent mode at all times, and

there will definitely be interruotions throughout the day.

CHEATING- putting cell phones and test times together can result in student

dishonesty. Cell phones make it very easy for students to share answer, take photos or

quizzes or test, or look up answer in online during texting. Some students may take

photos of their notes or notebook as a references during the test. Cheating can become a

big problem in schools where cell phones usages is allowed, even with strict rule

enforcement.

Cellphones have undoubtedly become an integral part of modern society, and

increasingly common among k-12 children adolescent. According to a recent stude

conducted by a Pearson Education, 82% of high school stydents use mobile deviced

regularly. With the increasingl popularity of cell phones among students comes the

sharply contested debate as to whether pr not they should be allowed in classrooms.

While their is a valid case to be argued by parents an educators that cell phones are

discruptive to the learning environment and can lead negative behaviors such as cheating

on exams, cell phones can certainly enrich and become a useful educational tool in

supplementing teaching instruction (Pearson education 2008).

The institution of this study is t aware the senior high school students of Roman C.

Villalon Memorial Colleges Foundation Incorporated of what could be the possible

effects of using cell phones during class hours to the learning and the benefeciaries of this

study is not only for Senior High Schoolstudents of RCVMCFI but to all students who

use cellphones in the classroom.

II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Accoring to Flanagan (2008), various studies have sought to determine the effects of

the use of technology on student achievement. Studies found both positive and negative

effect of technology on student achievement. The ideal goal for educators is to implement

technology in the classroom and see definite positive effects on students achievement.

Saez (2003), in today`s golden age of information cellular phones have become an

integral part of the day life. People of all ages rely on them fot both communication and

entertainment. However, some people disagree whether cell phonesare appropriate for

certain places, such as the classroom it`s important for parents, teachers and students to

understand the detrimental effects of cell phones in schools.

Texting

Texting in the class has become a serious concern for educators. Dr. Patricia

Fiorellio, moderator of the high school mediator websitr, warns that students can`t focus

on the lesson if they are busy sending message on their phones. It distracts teachers and

students who are trying to concentrate on the lesson.

Sexting

Unlike texting which is nuisance, “ sexting “ involves sending sexuality

provocative picture or message. It is no secret that teenagers are powder kegs of raging

hormones, constantly learning about their sexuality.

Policies

Although the disadvantages of cell phones in the scgool are quiet apparent, the

decision to regulate or ban them is up to each school. Some instututions prohibited

Mobile phones and near the return century. Many schools allow the devices because of

external pressure from parents who claim that cell phones are important for emergency

communication. National school safety aand security services recommends that only

teachers and staff cay cell phones for use during crisis.

Technology in the classroom hast the potential to reignite student learning by offering

more engaging interactive ways to learn course material. However, the benefits of

technology in the classroom may be out of weigh by the costs, particularly of the rise of

all phones in the classroom. Cell phones have allowed students flexibility in managing

their coursework, such as organizing assignment and finding course information, with

little or no effort, Tossel, Kortum, Shephard, Rahmati, Zhong (2015).

The increase of student who use cell phone in classrooms has lead to decreadein

academic performance and satisfaction, Dietz and Henrich (2014). Dietz nad Henrich

(2014) found that since the increase technology in the classroom, there has been an

increased report of a decline in over all grades and decreased seatwork. Using cellphones

in the classroom has been connected with lower recall and decrease in student satisfaction

with instruction Dietz and henrich (2014); comprehension has also lessened when

students use electronic devices for non-educational purposes. Students Elder (2013).

Only 8% of student feel that their cell phone usage in class hinders their academic

performance, Berry and Westfall (2015).

Americans have has a long-held fascination with technoloogy. The fascination continues

unabated into thr 21st century as US consumers are spending an ever increasing amount

of time with technology Grififths (2000), Bremer (2012), Roberts and Pirog (2012), first

it was radio, then the telephone and the TV followed quickly by the internet. The current

day fascination with the cellphones (e.g smartphones) highlights tha latest technology

that, for better or worse, appears to be encouraging people to spend relatively more time

with technology Griffiths (2000). Nowhere is this fascination with technology and less

with fellow humans Griffiths (2000). Nowhere is this fascination with technology more

intense than in young adults college students in particular Massimini, Peterson (2009)

Shambre, Rugimba, Zhawa (2012). Present day cell phones are seen as critical in
maintaining social relationships and conducting the more mundane exisgencies of

everyday life Junco and Poly-avent (2008), Junco and Cotton (2012).

An increasing relliance on cell phones among young adults and college students

may signal the evolutions of cell phones use from a habit of addiction. Although the

concepts of addiction has multiple definations, traditionally it has been described as the

repeated use of a substance despite the negative consequences suffered by the generalized

to include behaviors like gambling, sex, exercise, eating, internet and cell phones use

Roberts and Pirog (2012). An entity that can produce a pleadurable sensation has

potential of becoming addicted Alavi et al (2012).

respondents regarding on the use of cell phines during class hours. They distributed the

survey questionnaires 15 to the Grade 11 Earth 15 also to the Grade 11 Mars 10 to the

Grade 12 Venus and 10 to the Grade 12 Saturn.

purpose.

b. For the teachers they should implement strict rules regarding of using Cell

phones to avoid distruction in the class.

c. For the administrator of the school they should orient all the students of what

could

be the negative effect of using cell phones if it is not use properly by the

student.
