MATH30-5 Final Exam Problem Set D

1. The compressive strength of samples of cement can be modelled by a

normal distribution with a mean of 6000 kilograms per square centimetre and
a standard deviation of 100 kilograms per square centimetre. What strength
is exceeded by 95% of the sample.

2. The yield of a reinforcing steel bar is being studied. From previous

experience, yield is known to be normally distributed and σ = 3. After
gathering the data for the percent elongation that resulted in the
following percent yields: 91.6, 88.75, 90.8, 89.95, and 91.3. Find a 96%
two sided confidence interval on the true mean yield.

3. It is said that one set order at a local supplier for sand is to have a
mean weight of 85 pounds. A complaint is made that the order they received
was insufficient, and lacking in amount. As one bit of evidence, 25 orders
are weighed and found to have a mean weight of 80.94 pounds. It is known
that the population standard deviation σ is 11.6 pounds. Based on the
available data, what should be concluded concerning the complaint?

4. A semiconductor manufacturer produces controllers used in automobile

engine applications. The customer requires that the process fallout or
fraction defective at critical manufacturing step not exceed 0.05 and that
the manufacturer demonstrate process capability at this level of quality
using alpha = 0.05. The semiconductor manufacturer takes a random sample of
200 devices and finds that four of them are defective. Can the manufacturer
demonstrate the process capability for the customer?

5. An engineer reported on a study by electronic means. He measured the

current in a magnetic winding with and without the electronics in a paired
experiment. Data for the case without electronics is provided in the
following table. Estimate the correlation coefficient and test the
hypothesis. Use α=0.05.

X 0.66 1.32 1.98 2.64 3.30 3.96 4.62 3.28 5.94 6.60

Y 44.2 7.32 12.22 16.34 23.66 28.06 33.39 34.12 39.21 47.47

6. A civil engineer claims that construction delays were caused by the

following: 50% were lazy workers, 31% lack of materials, and 19% are
others. In the observation of the manager, there where 65% lazy workers,
30% lack of materials, and 5% others. Test the claim of the civil engineer
at α=0.05.

7. An article in the ACI Materials Journal (1987, Vol. 84, pp. 213-216)
described several experiments investigating the rodding of concrete to
remove entrapped air. A 3 inch x 6 inch cylinder was used, and the number
of times this rod was used is the design variable. The resulting
compressive strength of concrete specimen is the response. The data is
shown in the following table below.

Is there any difference in the compressive forces due to the rodding level?
