Prologue (5 minutes)
Narrator (or P.T. Barnum), Charity

Narrator wearing a plain top hat enters the audience area. This is mainly improve as an
effort to “sell” a ticket. You may want to plant an audience member with $2 in case
nobody buys a ticket.

NARRATOR: There is one ticket left for the $1000 raffle - only $2 for the last ticket.

Get someone from the audience to buy it and then draw a random paper.

NARRATOR: You didn’t win.

NARRATOR: (To the rest of the audience - cup hand beside mouth)
They say that there is a sucker born every minute.

Charity enters from off stage and reprimands Barnum

CHARITY: Don’t you know that lotteries are now illegal for people to run and that only
the government is allowed to steal money from people that way. Give that person their
money back.
CHARITY: (Charity makes the Narrator give the $2 back.)

NARRATOR: Well, if people can’t sell false hopes anymore; maybe they can sell false
joy.

Lights fade to dark and they walk off stage.

Scene 1 - Whatever it Takes (10-15 minutes)

Young Barnum, P.T.Barnum, Charity, Division 3

Young Barnum (tattered and poor) finds a windblown top hat and puts in on (kind of like
a Frosty the Snowman kind of moment).

PROP PERSON 1: Throws top hat in from the side of the stage.
YOUNG BARNUM: (picking up hat off ground) Thank my lucky stars! This is a sign for
my future.
Young Barnum puts it on his head and looks into a “mirror” (paper with a silhouette
drawing of a rich successful adult Barnum) and stands with back to audience in the
same pose of the mirror.

SONG 1: A Million Dreams (Young Barnum and with Barnum; Charity optional)
Young Barnum turns from mirror towards audience to sing - option change the words
from “we” to “I”?

I close my eyes and I can see

The world that's waiting up for me
That I call my own
Through the dark, through the door
Through where no one's been before
But it feels like home

0:38 They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy
They can say, they can say I've lost my mind
I don't care, I don't care, so call me crazy
We can live in a world that we design

1:04 'Cause every night I lie in bed

The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make

Turning slightly towards the mirror.

1:41 There's a house we can build
Every room inside is filled
With things from far away
The special things I compile
5

Each one there to make you smile

On a rainy day
Towards audience
2:05 They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy
They can say, they can say we've lost our minds
I don't care, I don't care if they call us crazy
Runaway to a world that we design

P.T. BARNUM Enter stage (from behind mirror? Or just from the side) and sing
together.

2:30 Every night I lie in bed

The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake

BOTH BARNUMS: stand arms over each others’ shoulders

I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make

Young Barnum leaves as Charity enters and puts a jacket on Barnum and sings.
3:00
However big, however small
Let me be part of it all
Share your dreams with me
You may be right, you may be wrong
But say that you'll bring me along
To the world you see
To the world I close my eyes to see

(both singing) I close my eyes to see

Every night I lie in bed
The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
A million dreams, a million dreams

both singing:
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make
6

For the world we're gonna make

Young Barnum walks off at end of song as Charity walks on stage carrying a nice
jacket. She puts the jacket on Barnum while saying her line:

CHARITY: There's still a chance for you …. 'Cause there's a spark in you. You just
have to ignite the light and let it shine.

P.T.Barnum and Charity walk off together arm in arm.

SONG 2: “Firework by Katy Perry” (Division 3 - Grade 1 & 2 holding a combindation of

glow sticks or finger lights and blinking flashlights rods) Students keep the lights hidden
behind their backs and then lift them out and above their heads in unison on “You just
gotta ignite the light” and then wave back and forth.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag

Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in

0:34 Do you ever feel already buried deep

Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you
You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

1:03 'Cause baby you're a firework

Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

1:18 Baby you're a firework

Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
7

You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds

1:45 After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you can open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time, you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light

And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

2:20 'Cause baby you're a firework

Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

2:36 Baby you're a firework

Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em fallin' down down down

2:51 Boom, boom, boom

Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through oogh, oogh

3:09 'Cause baby you're a firework

Come on show 'em what your worth
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you're a firework

Come on let your colors burst
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe awe awe

TREE: (Speaking quickly.) He was born James McGinnes but he soon became an

P.T. BARNUM: I promise that you will be even MORE FAMOUS ... WORLD FAMOUS.

Barnum walks over to other side of stage to meet Charity walking on and they go for a
stroll arm in arm. (Phillip and Jenny step off stage.) Barnum is trying to convince
Charity that new act he is checking out is good for everyone and that the unique
performers will be fine without him there.

There's something breaking at the brick of every wall, it's holding
All that you know; So tell me do you wanna go?
