A VOYAGE

THROUGH THE
BRAIN: By: ENTB, RPm

WIDER THAN THE

SKY
The Brain--- is wider than the Sky—
For– put them side by side
The one the other will contain
With ease--- and you--- beside

- Emily Dickinson
THE CASE OF PHINEAS GAGE
HOW DOES THE BRAIN WORK?
 The hemispheres of the brain are involved in dif ferent kinds of
intellectual and emotional functions and responses.
 Lef t brained- logical and intellectual
 Right brained- intuitive, creative and emotional
HOW DOES THE BRAIN WORK?

--- primary motor area is located, control -- primary somatosensory area

voluntary movement in a contralateral (sensory signals such as touch,
manner left controls right and vice versa) pressure and pain)

-- primary visual area

that processes visual
sensations

-- primary auditory
area
 Frontal lobe- primary motor area is located, control voluntary
movement in a contralateral manner lef t controls right and
vice versa)
 Temporal lobe- primary auditory area
 Parietal lobe- primary somatosensory area (sensory signals
such as touch pressure, pain)
 Ocippital lobe- primary visual area, receives signals from
thalamus and processes visual sensations
HOW DOES THE BRAIN WORK?

--- Involved in the regulation

of body temperature,
motivation and emotion.
-- relay center

--- Involved in the regulation

of heartbeat and respiration

--- Involved in respiration,

attention, sleep and dreaming Limbic System
 Cerebrum- consist of the two hemispheres
 Cerebral cortex- wrinkles surface of the cerebrum
 Medulla- involved in the regulation of heartbeat and
respiration
 Pons- respiration, attention, sleep and dreaming
 Cerebellum- muscle coordination and balance
 Reticular Activating System - attention, arousal and sleep
 Thalamus- relay center
 Limbic System- includes hypothalamus, amygdala and
hippocampus
 Hypothalamus- regulation of body temperature, concentration
of fluids, storage of nutrients, motivation and emotion
 Amygdala- aggressive responses
