18th/19th January 2020 PEACE SUNDAY – 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
Today we pray for PEACE in our world. We
support the work of all peacemakers,
especially PAX Christi, that International
Organisation working, for Peace, Justice,
Reconciliation and non-Violent Resistance.
‘Note that prayer at the end of St Paul’s
letter today: “May God our Father and the
Lord Jesus Christ send you grace and
peace”. This is our prayer today too’.
It’s interesting that today we have a
reading from St John’s Gospel (even
though we are in the Year of St Matthew).
It is explained in the General Introduction
to the Lectionary: “On the Second Sunday
after Christmas, the readings are about the
mystery of the INCARNATION “(95). John
in his Gospel leaves no
doubt about the fact
that Jesus is the
Messiah. He is the
Saviour of the world;
the Word made flesh:
‘the lamb of God that
takes away the sin of
the world’; ‘ he will baptise you with the
Holy Spirit and fire’; ‘Yes, I have seen and I
AM THE WITNESS that he is the Chosen
One of God’.
Some people at the time, thought John the
Baptist might be the Messiah or Moses or
Elijah returned. In the Qumran area near
the Dead Sea, there was an Essene
Settlement, a Community. John the Baptist
may have been part of that community or
at least was influenced by them. They had
a sort of ‘monastic’ style life and were
eager to live by the Torah – the Law of God

as found in the first books of the Old
Testament. John the Baptist now had to
convince his own followers and those who
come to him for baptism at the Jordan ,
that he was NOT the Messiah, but only a
witness pointing out the Messiah, Jesus.
Since John was baptising before Jesus
appeared, it would seem, that he was
superior. That is why John spoke: “A man
is coming after me who ranks before me
because he existed before me. I did not
know him myself, and yet it was to reveal
him in Israel (and us) that I was baptising
with water”. John introduces Jesus; he
gives him the public stage to begin his
ministry.
In other words, Jesus the ‘Word made
Flesh’, the Son of God, existed from
eternity in God the Father.
We are now deep into the mystery Of the
INCARNATION! And not only that, but
through our Baptism we are at the very
heart of this mystery.
We too are invited to be witnesses. Last
Sunday on the Feast of the Baptism of
Jesus, we were able to renew our Baptismal
promises; we made our profession of faith
in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. WE
promise to try to live out that reality in our
lives. This is what it means to be a
Christian, a follower of Christ. Every time
we sttempt to do good, to forgive, to show
compassion, spread the Word of God … we
are being witnesses to Jesus.
