ABSTRACT

Animation is the one of the most leading profession in art industry.

Nevertheless, some people do not have any prior knowledge how

animators are struggling in their time, work place and mood. However, this

study will showcase what are the best and worst working conditions

among animators. As the researchers, our grade 11 and grade 12

animators are being surveyed to know what they are experiencing towards

working in animation. The outcome of this study will help the future

researchers and animators to improve their surroundings, time availability

and mood. First chapter will discuss the background of the study, the

problems to be solved, the limitations, and the reason why the researchers

chose this topic. Second chapter will discuss about the related literature of

the study, it includes the local and foreign study that is related to the

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Animation is everywhere—in our homes, schools, work, and

everywhere there’s a screen. It is the process of creating motion and

shape change illusion by means of the rapid display of a sequence of

static images that minimally differ from each other. Animators are artists

who specialises in the creation of animation. Animation is a very creative

media to express, hence it is being used in almost every field. Working

conditions refers to the working environment, stress and noise levels,

working time, and anything that affects the performances of the person.

Situations including the weather, location, time, and tools can also affect

the animator’s performances.

The AMA Education System provides animation subject under the

technical-vocational-livelihood (TVL) track strand to senior high school

students. Technical-vocational-livelihood track offers Information and

Communication Technology (ICT) with specialisation in Animation and

Programming.

The researchers will determine the effects and the difference

between the best and worst working conditions among senior high school

animators.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This proposed study shows the best and worst working conditions

among animators. It also determines the academic performances of

students. The researchers aims to answer the following questions.

1. What are the effects of the working conditions among senior high

school animators?

2. Is there significant difference between the best and worst working

conditions?

3. Are there significant association between the two types of working

conditions?

1.3 Scope and Limitations

This proposed study aims to prove the effectiveness of the working

conditions among the animation students. The respondents of this study

will be only the grade 11 and grade 12 of Technical-vocational-livelihood

(TVL) track with the strand of Information and Communication Technology

specialization in Animation.

This study and its outcome will be conducted only in AMA Senior High

Biñan campus.

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial mostly to animation students, future

researchers, and parents.

For animation students: it will benefit them to broaden their knowledge

about the two types of working condition in animation, it will help them to

determine their preferable environment.

For future researchers: this might help them with their related literature

and references. It will help them broaden their knowledge and ideas about

their study.

For parents: it will benefit them to have enough knowledge and ideas

for their children’s condition.

1.5 Definition of Terms

The following important terms are defined based on context or how

they were used in the study:

Broaden – expand to encompass more people, ideas, or things.

Motion – the action or process of moving or being moved.

Rapid – marked by a fast rate of motion.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

3.1 Foreign studies

According to Derya Ozcelik Buskermolen (2015), Visual quality had

an effect on representation realism. Participants who were shown visually

refined representations were more convinced that the concept would

behave the same in real life as it was shown in the representation.

Medium had no effect on the quality of the feedback elicited from users;

visual quality did. Participants who saw sketchy representations provided

more elaborate feedback and suggestions and grounded their feedback

on past experiences.

According to Souad Belkhyr (2013) Children’s media products

reflect the cultural values of their producers and the social, political and

economic conditions under which they were produced. Watching an

animated feature, therefore, cannot be regarded as an innocent and

simple act of consumption. It rather involves a complex process of

coding/decoding and appropriating cultural meanings. The relation

between structured patterns of communication under globalization, on one

hand, and the local conditions under which Disney cartoon products are

marketed and consumed in the Arab world, on the other, can be

understood as the main axis of globalized diffusion and local appropriation

of American cultural values and lifestyle among Arab societies. Page 5 of 11

Robin Wilding’s Animation Career Review (2012) The raising of

capital is an entry barrier, particularly for studios that want to produce

theatrical content. Software and hardware are expensive. Venture

capitalists don't see the benefit of films and would rather invest in the

latest internet 'thing' than movies. We need to shape their expectations to

realize the next Pixar or Dreamworks can be created by one single

animated film from a new studio doing well at the box office.

Daron Nefcy (2015) stated that there are a lot of moving pieces to

running a show. She’d say one of the hardest parts about the job is letting

things go. You want the show to be perfect but this is TV and with

deadlines you need to learn to let things go, you can't work on them

forever.

Hannah Nutting (2016) said that animation is a collaboration, and

being an Animation student at Falmouth University is like a big, messy,

stressed out family. Animation has been and always will be a team effort.

At the end of the day, you're all suffering through confusing animation

programmes or sailing through animation tests together.

Staff’s research about Animator Career Working Environment

(2013) stated that most of these artists work in office buildings or in private

studios in their homes. Artists who sit at drafting tables or use computers

for extended periods may experience back pain, eyestrain or fatigue.

While many work a standard 40-hour seek, during busy periods, they may

work overtime to meet deadlines. While self-employed artists can set their

own hours, they may spend much of their time and effort recruiting

potential customers or clients and building a reputation.

According to Martin Castañeda, the rise of animation industry in the

Philippines particularly begin one of the faster growing type of outsourced

work. The Philippines has long been engaging into this industry which can

be traced as early as the 1980’s. Having that established reputation and

with the presence of intrinsic creative pool of Filipino talents, the

Philippines are one of the stronger Asian players in the global animation

industry which greatly contributes to the country’s economic growth.

The Challenges in the Philippine Animation Industry by Sarah

Joson (2012), animation in the Philippines began in the 1980s and

proliferated as foreign organizations based in Canada, Australia, and the

US started hiring Filipino artists who eventually became animators. This

resulted to a talent shortage in the country, one of the key challenges that

local organizations are currently trying to solve. Also, the Philippines lacks

the necessary technology to progress in the field, unlike its Asian

counterparts such as Thailand, China, Singapore, and Malaysia.

According to Republic of the PhilippinesEven a high school

graduate can be an Animator provided he/she has the artistic ability to

sketch/ draw and has good imagination. This is what they call the Entry-

level Animator. However, to be a Key Animator, certain trainings on the

following subject matters will be useful: graphic design/illustration, 2-D and

3-D design, art and design, spatial design, film and video, multimedia and

computer aided design.

Tin Chan’s research “Philippine Animation and Local Artists” stated

that the Philippines animation has finally found its way. Inspired by the

high degrees of sophistication emitted by other countries Filipino artists

decided to try their luck in the art. "ears of hardships and disappointments

never dampened the spirits of our hardworking animators.

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This study is a Descriptive Research about the difference between

the two types of working conditions. The researchers will be using

dichotomous questions for the conducted data to ensure the effectiveness

and difference between the best and worst working conditions among

senior high school animators.

3.2 Population

In this study, the researchers’ target population is 50 random

female and male respondents with age range of 15-19 years old from

AMACC TVL Senior High School students. 10 students will be randomly

chosen from some sections, there are total of 11 TVL sections in AMACC,

5 sections from Grade 11 and 6 sections from Grade 12.

3.3 Locale of the Study

This research will be conducted in AMA Computer College Biñan

and only focuses on Grade 11 and 12 Senior High School students.

The researcher will be using a survey form to collect data from the

students. To describe the profile of the respondents, the percentage will

be computed. Here are the formulas that the researcher will use for the

interpretation of data:

Percentage:

P = F/N x 100

Where:

P = Percentage (%)

F = Frequency

N = Total Number of Population

Weighted Mean:

WM = (∑fx) / N

Where:

WM = Weighted Mean

F = Frequency

X = Weight of frequency
