SESSION ENDING EXAM – 2017-18
CLASS XII Max. Marks - 70
SUBJECT- PHYSICS Max. Time – 3 Hours.
1) All questions are compulsory. There are 26 questions in all.
2) This question paper has five sections; section A, section B, section C, section D and section E,
3) Section A contains five questions of one marks each, section B contains five questions of two
marks each, section C contains twelve questions of three marks each, section D contains one
value based question of four marks and section E contains three questions of five marks
each,
4) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question of
two marks, one question of three marks and all the three questions of five marks.
You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
SECTION A

1. How does rise in temperature affects viscosity of (i) gases (ii) liquids.
2. Define modulus of rigidity of a material. Give its S.I unit.
3. A Refrigerator works between – 100C and 27oC, removing heat equal to 2000 J from freezer.
Calculate the coefficient of performance of the freezer?
4. Define the degree of freedom . Write the expression for degree of freedom.
5. A progressive wave is given by y(x ,t ) = 8 sin 2π (t – 0.005x). Where x and y in cm and t in
second. What is the (i) wavelength, (ii) frequency of the wave
SECTION B
6. Derive the equation of motion S = ut + ½ at2 for an object moving with constant acceleration
along a straight line by using calculus method .
7. Prove that Newton’s second law of motion is the only real law of motion.
8. A machine gun fires a bullet of mass 50 g with a velocity 1500 m/sec. The man holding it, can
exert a maximum force of 600 N on the gun. How many bullets can he fire per second at the
most?
9. Obtain an expression for the acceleration due to gravity at a depth ‘d ’ from the surface of the
earth of mass ‘M’ and radius ‘R’ . Using the expression, find the weight of a body of mass ‘m’ at
the centre of the earth ?
OR
Three mass points each of mass ‘m’ are placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side’ l’.
What is the gravitational field and potential due to three masses at the centroid of the triangle?

10.State the law of equipartition of energy and prove that for a diatomic gas, the ratio of the two
specific heats at room temperature is 7/5.
SECTION C

11(a) Write the dimensions of a/b in the relations F = a√x + bt2, where F is force, x is distance and t
is time.
(b) A physical quantity X is given by the relation X = mv2/r. If the percentage errors of
measurements in m, v and r are 2%,3% and 4% respectively, then calculate the percentage
error in X
12. Two forces, whose magnitude are at the ratio of 3:5 give a result of 35 N. If angle of inclination
is 60o, find magnitude of each force?
OR
A boatman can row with a speed of 10 km/hr in still water. If the river flows steadily at 5 km/hr,
in which direction should the boatman row in order to reach a point on the other bank directly
opposite to the point from where he started? The width of the river is 2 km.
13. Two masses M and m are connected at the two ends of a inextensible string. The string passes
over a smooth frictionless pulley. Calculate the acceleration of the masses and the tension in
the string. (M>m).
14. A bullet of mass 0.01 kg is fired horizontally into 4 kg wooden block at rest on a horizontal
surface. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.25.The bullet
gets embedded in the block and the combination moves 20 m before coming to rest. With what
speed did the bullet strike the block?
15. State work energy theorem. Derive the work-energy theorem for a variable force.
16. Show that in a head on collision between two balls of equal masses moving along straight lines,
the balls simply exchange their velocities.
17 State the theorems of parallel and perpendicular axes of moment of Inertia.

A ring, a disc and a solid sphere all of the same radius and mass roll down an inclined plane
of inclination ϴ from the same height h. Which of the three reaches the bottom (i) earliest (ii)
latest? Justify your answer.
18. Name the physical quantity which is the rotational analogue of force and give its S.I unit.
Obtain a relation of this quantity with the angular momentum
19. Define escape velocity. Obtain an expression for escape velocity of a body from the surface of
the earth?

Derive expression for the orbital velocity of a satellite and its time period.

20. Show that terminal velocity ‘v’ of a spherical object of radius r, density ρ falling through a
viscous medium of density ϭ and coefficient of viscosity η is given by

21. State Kelvin’s statement of second law of thermodynamics. Draw the block diagram for a heat
engine with an ideal gas as the working substance. Write the expression for the efficiency of
the heat engine. Explain why the efficiency of a heat engine cannot be 100 %.
22. Write the expression of the pressure exerted by a gas in terms of density and r.m.s velocity.
Show that the pressure exerted by a gas is 2/3rd of the average Kinetic energy per unit volume
of the gas molecules.

23.Sunita was waiting at the platform alongwith his uncle for Rajdhani Express. Soon she saw the
train coming towards the platform. She noticed that as the train was approaching her, the pitch
of its whistle appeared to rise and it suddenly appeared to drop as the engine moved away from
her. When the train stopped, Sunita and her uncle entered the train. Sunita discussed this
observation with her uncle. His uncle, being a physics teacher, explain her the reason for the
change in pitch of the whistle.
(a) What are the values being displayed by Sunita?
(b) Name the effect involved in the above observation.
(c) An observer moves towards a stationary source of sound with a velocity one fifth of the
velocity of sound. What is the percentage increase in the apparent frequency

24.(a) A projectile is fired with a certain velocity u making an angle θ with the horizontal. Derive
the expression for total time of flight and the horizontal range. Show that its trajectory is parabolic.
(b) A cricketer can through a ball to a maximum horizontal distance of 100m. How much high
above the ground an the cricketer through the same ball?
OR
(a) Derive an expression for centripetal acceleration in case of a uniform circular motion of an
object.
(b) Two tall building face each other and are at a distance of 180m from each other. With what
velocity must a ball be thrown horizontally from a window 55m above the ground in one
building, so that it enters a window 10.9 m above the ground in the second building.
25 .State Bernoulli’s Principle. Derive an expression for the same. Name a device based on this
principle used to measure the flow of incompressible fluid..
OR
(a) Define surface tension. Derive an expression for the rise of a liquid in a capillary tube.
(b) A liquid drop of radius 1 cm is spread into 64 droplets of equal size. Calculate the energy
expended? Surface tension of the liquid 32 X 10-2 N/m.
26. (a) Define simple harmonic motion. Show that in S.H.M., the acceleration is directly
proportional to the displacement at any instant but opposite in direction.
(b) The time period of a body executing SHM is 2 second. After how much time will its
displacement be half of its amplitude?
OR
(a) What are stationary waves? Calculate the frequencies of first three harmonics in a pipe
closed at one end.
(b) Two vibrating wires A and B are slightly out of tune and produce beats of frequency 8 Hz.
The tension in the string A is slightly increased and the beat frequency is found to reduce
5Hz.If the original frequency of A is 480 Hz, what is the frequency of B
