Vegetables to Grow Indoors

Not having enough space for a yard should not be a reason for being able to
start a vegetable garden given the healthy benefits one can derive from vegetables.
Start learning how to enjoy indoor vegetable growing where environment is
controlled, making it easier. Many vegetables can be easily grown indoors such as
herbs like basil, cilantro and catnip which are almost always needed in all sorts of
recipes. Below are more vegetables that can be grown indoors:

• Tomatoes – this plant vary in kind. There are Tumbler tomatoes that
are good planted in hanging baskets or Heirloom tomatoes that are good
for both fresh eating and for making juicy tomato sauces.
• Radishes – while radish is a root crop, it does not need the depth most
root crops require. The round or globe kind may be grown in boxes, pots
or pans.
• Carrots – a beautiful white carrot with crisp and crunchy texture is
a nice addition to gourmet dishes and to salads. They can also be grown
indoors in a deep pot and with enough sunlight. There are round carrot
varieties too that can be planted in boxes.
• Potatoes – surprisingly these tubers commonly planted outdoors
may also be grown indoors in large pots, buckets or plastic sacks that
can serve the purpose quite well. You can roll the top down at the start,
leaving enough space to place compost then gradually roll up as needed.
• Mushrooms – are plants that make an ideal crop at any time of
the year where yields are obtained in just a few weeks. Only the spawn
requires to be watered then they can be left in dark areas of the house
that are draft-free and temperature is maintained at 50-60°F or 10-15°C.

• Beans – among the beans family, those that crop well indoors are
Dwarf broad beans and Dwarf runner beans. Runner beans are ideal, too,
provided you can place the plant in a sunny area.
• Lettuce – these leafy greens are almost always a salad essential and
what better way to make fresh green salad than to pick the leaves fresh
growing from your own indoor garden as needed. Fast-growers are Tom
Thumb head lettuce.
• Peppers – when planted indoors, thin-walled variety (spicy or mild)
grow better than any other pepper variety. Thai pepper or the long Red
Cayenne gives an aesthetic appeal as they grow.
• Eggplants – a 5-gallon container will be enough for one compact-
sized eggplant which thrives better with plenty of sun. In 75 to 100 days
after planting, you should be seeing your first eggplant grow.
• Herbs – as mentioned above, herbs that are very good components
in enhancing flavors from chives to cilantro to parley. You may also add
thyme or oregano. To promote dynamic growth, trim the plants regularly.
