Improving the internet speed & QOS in KIOT???

Background
Kombolcha institute of technology is situated in Amhara Regional State which is 376 km
far from Addis Ababa. It was established by Ministry of Education (MOE) in 1999 E.C,
and has begun to give services for the students in 1999 E.C. and also a network is a vital
thing to communicate locally and globally this network is designed for both students and
staffs. It gives an internet services for both student and staffs in wired and wireless
system. At the time this service is provide by campus ICT department.

Statement of the problem

 The internet is one of the university services that delivered by department of ICT it
have so many problems. Currently, all activities are performed on not well
organized system). This process of working procedure creates many problems these
are:

 The main and the first cause are poor network design and bandwidth management

 In cause of slow internet connection any one can’t send data to the remote host and
cant copy from remote computer to the local computer

 Problem to access different websites

 It consume more time to download some document from internet example to

download 1GB data it takes more than 8 hours and it fails minimum 15 times when
you download using windows downloader

 That doesn’t have well educated network admin and server administrator

 The DHCP server was not actively authenticate and provide an IP address for new
node

 No one can attend online lecture from difference university’s

 Difficult to make video call
 Depending on the web page or website you are visiting or the download you are
receiving, your Internet connection may appear to be slow

~1~

 Downloading while browsing
 The day or time of day affects the overall speed of the Internet, as well as your
individual connection. When more people are online, servers and Internet
connections can become overloaded and cause delays in the response time because
of poor network design

 A virus or malware infection. Internet speed can be reduced because viruses and
malware are corrupting essential operating system files using up system resources
(memory) that would otherwise be for Internet function.

 Server or website location

 Some of the servers are not functional
 The network may one day attack by DoS.
 The design of a network will affect access speed as much as the number of users
 The number of applications that are running at the same time.
 Another factor affecting the bandwidth experience of your Internet connection is the
number of background uploads and downloads that occur on your computer. This is
most often encountered in software that automatically updates, such as anti-virus
programs or operating system updates. If this is a concern for you, many of these
automatic update processes can be turned off in the settings of each individual
program

 More than 600 user’s access the connection at the same time.

Objective the new network design
General Objective
The general objective of this research is to identify causes of slow internet
connection in KIOT and improve QOS and to fix this slow internet and network issue to
improve QOS. In my research we improve the connection speed by modifying the
network architecture make the backbone of the network fiber optic, use high speed
routers, use more DHCP servers to minimize delay to give IP address for hosts . This
new architecture do by subneting different department in difference LAN by making
physical subnetneting different departments to uses DHCP server, and the other thing
block the websites that uses high bandwidth like YouTube, dire tube, adiss97,
ethiocinima, abisiniya, torrents and other restricted sits during work time from 2:00-
6:00 and 8:00-11:00,the other way to improve the connection schedule all computers
windows and antivirus update after 11:00 clock weekly .

Specific Objective
The specific objective of our research is that:

 Improve the download and the upload speed

 Create reliable, scalable and maintainable network architecture

 Avoid latency during data transmit ion in local networks

 Changing the windows NOS to LINUX operating system

 Make all servers functional

 Add redundancy on the network

 Avoid failure during download

 Allow students, teachers and administrative departments to make video call to

attend meeting and online tutorial

 Allowing students to store their sensitive data on remote server

 Avoiding DOS attacks

Research methodology
Primary data collection

 In primary data collection, we collect the data by the following methods, such as
interviews and Participatory observation.

a) Interview

 This is one of the methods used for the collection of data in which the researcher
has the chance of asking different questions. We will conduct the interview with
the network administrator and different clients.

b) Participatory observation

 This is another type of method for collecting data and information and also it is the
simplest way of gathering data in which we can witness the actual events which
will happen in the server room and observe in my own and friend’s computer.

c) Questioner

 This other type of methods for collecting data and information we prepare an open
end questioner for network admin

Scope of the project

An internet service has numerous roles, but it very difficult to manage it by shortage
of time and educated labor and resource. So that our research will improve the speed
two times from the current have the speed in KIOT.

 The physical subneting the basic thing to improve the speed of the internet
connection

 Add additional router to the network

~4~
Improving the internet speed & QOS in KIOT???
 Securing the data center by using biometric authentication

 Use fiber cable from building to building connection and use GIGA interface to
connect switches from floor to floor

 By using physical subletting change one 150MBPS trunk in to two 75MBPS supply
one trunk for one router, other for other router that’s make the decrease the load in
one trunk.

 By assigning good maintenance staff check the computers and networks health by
schedule because virus and other background download are the basic thing to make
the bandwidth bottleneck

 Bloke some websites during work time

 Installing best antivirus for all computers and make thus updates scheduled
automatically

 Improve the topology the network

 Securing each computer by software firewall

 Upgrade the capacity of DHCP server

 Connect wireless access points under their correct location and remove
nonfunctional AP to avoid wifi jungle

 Install Firewall before the main internet trunk connected to the servers to filter
malware and other malicious activities

Design approach
We use top down typical hierarchical campus design, distribution blocks use a combination
of Layer 2, Layer 3, and Layer 4 protocols and services to provide for optimal convergence,
scalability, security, and manageability. In the most common distribution block
configurations, the access switch is configured as a Layer 2 switch that forwards traffic on
high speed trunk ports to the distribution switches. The distribution switches are
configured to support both Layer 2 switching on their downstream access switch trunks
and Layer 3 switching on their upstream ports towards the core of the network

Limitation of the research

There are some limitations for this proposal. These are:

 It requires more educated manpower

 It needs big budget

 Difficult to manage red hat Linux operating system

 The cost are very expensive coz ND needs high speed fiber optic backbone

 Am using duplicate numbers of servers and routers

The data center

Location

~7~
Improving the internet speed & QOS in KIOT???
Where are the data centers located?

We r place the data center and servers close to the users and underground of the cisco
building

Power
How are the data center power systems configured?

In new design using UPA to avoid power loss and to control power problems like sparks
power surges blackouts and other problems

Cooling
How is the data center cooling systems configured?

In the data center we use different big cullers to avoid overheating of routers, switches,
firewalls and servers

Security
How secure data centers?

We use a list of security “features”

Physical security:

We use those security mechanisms to protect physically the DC from security treats

By using

 Biometric authentication for server room

 surveillance camera on data centers
 place data center underground of the ICT building

Logical security:

We use

~8~
Improving the internet speed & QOS in KIOT???
 Hardware firewall
 And software firewall

Environmental controls

A standardized and predictable environment is the cornerstone of any quality data

center. It's not just about keeping things cool and maintaining appropriate humidity levels
(according to Wikipedia, the recommended temperature range is 61-75 degrees
Fahrenheit/16-24 degrees Celsius and 40-55% humidity). You also have to factor in fire
suppression, air flow and power distribution

Redundancy:

Is a vital thing in DC we have redundant backbones redundant power supplies and redundant
processor and redundant hard drives server implemented .

Logical implementation

IP addressing

~ 12 ~
Improving the internet speed & QOS in KIOT???
We r using class B IP address coz it serve about 216-2 = 65,534 hosts

Class of IP address on my network

VLAN’s

We r using three VLAN’S named student academic and administrative to meet thus listed targets

 Security – Separating systems that have sensitive data from the rest of the network
decreases the chances that people will gain access to information they are not authorized to
see.

 Performance/Bandwidth – Careful monitoring of network use allows the network

administrator to create VLANs that reduce the number of router hops and increase the
apparent bandwidth for network users.

 Broadcasts/Traffic flow – Since a principle element of a VLAN is the fact that it does not
pass broadcast traffic to nodes that are not part of the VLAN, it automatically reduces
broadcasts. Access lists provide the network administrator with a way to control who sees
what network traffic. An access list is a table the network administrator creates that lists
which addresses have access to that network.

 Departments/Specific job types – Companies may want VLANs set up for departments that
are heavy network users (such as multimedia or engineering), or a VLAN across
departments that is dedicated to specific types of employees (such as managers or sales
people).

DHCP servers

My network have 3 DHCP servers that provide IP address dynamically for all access layer
nodes computers each DHCP servers can serve up to 4000 IP address for both wired and
wireless hosts .

Conclusion

Recently information is leading the WORLD. So, being able to communicate is becoming one of the
basic necessities that any organization needs to have in order to success. Especially educational
