1. A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly along a straight road for 10 s and reaches
a speed of 40 m s-1. Then, it moves at this speed for a while before arriving at a hill
slope. The driver stops the engine and let the car move up the hill slope freely until it
stops. The distance travelled along the hill slope is 0.5 km. calculate

(1 mark)
b. The distance travelled along the straight road

(1 mark)
c. The deceleration of the car along the hill slope

(1 mark)

d. The time taken for the car to stop while moving up the hill slope.

2. A car starts from rest and is accelerating uniformly at the rate of 2.0 m s-2 for 15 s. It
then maintains a constant velocity for a minute. Then, the brakes are applied and the car
uniformly decelerates to rest in 10 s.

box.

a. Why is it easier to start and stop the empty trolley compared to the one loaded
with the heavy box.

(2 marks)
b. Explain why, when the trolley loaded with the heavy box is stopped suddenly, the
box moves forward and drops out of the trolley.

2. From the figure and descriptions below, explain each of the situations.

a. A brick is tied to a string. A boy pulls the stirng with a quick jerk. Instead of
moving the brick, the string snaps.
