CHAPTER-1

1.1 INTRODUCTION OF THE INDUSTRY

The Mineral Policy opened the gates of Indian mineral industry to domestic and
foreign investment, much of which was earlier reserved for the public sector. It aims to boost
the country’s exploration and mining efforts and render the mineral industry more
competitive.
Minerals are geological materials which are mined for their commercial value, which
are not fuel minerals and are not sources of metals (metallic minerals) but are used in the
industries based on their physical and/or chemical properties.
They are used in their natural state or after beneficiation either as raw materials or as
additives in a wide range of applications.
The mineral industries constitute the bedrock of industrial development as they
provide the basic raw materials for most of the industries. India produces as many as 84
minerals comprising 4 fuels, 11 metallic, and 49 non-metallic industrial and 20 minor
minerals.

1
India is largely self sufficient in most of the minerals which include barytes, bauxite,
chromites, dolomite, fluorspar, gypsum, iron ore, limestone, manganese ore, magnesite,
sillimanite, etc.

Except the minerals like copper, lead and zinc, natural phosphates, sulphur and crude
petroleum, in which domestic production meets the demand. They are used in their natural
state or after beneficiation either as raw materials or as additives in a wide range of
applications.

Mineral industry is opportunity based challenging investment with high risk. Risk
includes geological uncertainties, technical incompetency, and political stability. These
industries are spending a lot of money on exploration.

The mineral industry sector makes a significant contribution to the local and global
economies and provides employment to millions of people. These industries will provide
many minerals to other manufacturing companies.
