BACKGROUND: Computational methods play an important
role in carrying out high end research. These are capable of
handling large systems of equations, different degrees of non-
linearities which are common
in engineering practice. Computational methods can handle
complicated physical situations or geometries which are often
impossible to solve analytically and experimentally unfeasible.
There are many applications for computational methods in
engineering. The novelty lies in the way, such methods could
be applied to tackle important industrial as well as research
problems. The equations describing a physical phenomenon
may be a differential equation, a linear algebraic equation, an
integral equation or any other form.
OBJECTIVES: A researcher must be able to adapt an appro-
priate mathematical formulation and solve it analytically or
numerically. It needs to develop an understanding of various
formulation and solution techniques. Hence, the course has
been designed with following objectives: 1) Review and apply
mathematical fundamentals for modeling of physical systems,
2) Introduce analytical and numerical techniques of analysis,
3) Applying techniques of computational methods in handling
complicated industrial problems and 4) Apart from imparting
theoretical concepts of computational modelling the course
also tends to imparts hands on practical training on ANSYS
and MATLAB so as to help them gaining confidence in han-
dling computational based research problems.
COURSE CONTENTS: Introduction to Finite Difference,
Finite Volume and Finite Element Methods, Advanced Com-
putational Methods, Extended Finite Element Method, Ele-
ment Free Finite Element Method, Computational Methods for
Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer etc. and Laboratory Practices.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Engineering / Science Students,
Researchers, Teachers, Industrial professionals, Research fel-
lows and Scientists in R&D Labs.
REGISTRATON FEES: Registration is compulsory for all
the delegates/participants. The registration fee is non-
refundable and excludes boarding, lodging and meals.

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: A maximum of 40 participants
will be considered for this training programme. Application
will be accepted on first-cum-first serve basis. Participants are
encouraged to bring their own laptop and notebooks for prac-
tice.
VENUE: The workshop will be held at the seminar hall of the
Mechanical Engineering Department, National Institute of
Technology Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh.
Rail Link: Nearest broad gauge train head is at Una
(Himachal Pradesh), at a distance of 80 Kms from Hamirpur.
Una is well linked to all parts of India and journey is of nine
hours from Old Delhi Railway Station. Taxi/Bus services are

Road Link: The campus is situated at Anu in Hamirpur dis-
trict of Himachal Pradesh and is 3 Kms from main bus stand
of Hamirpur on (NH-70). The city of Hamirpur is well con-
nected with the rest of the country by road. Hamirpur is at a
distance of about 480 Kms from Delhi.
Nearest Airport:
1. Gaggal (Dharamshala) about 80 Kms from Hamirpur
2. Chandigarh about 220 Kms from Hamirpur.
ABOUT HAMIRPUR: Hamirpur is surrounded by various
famous temples of historical importance such as Jwalaji,
Chintapurni, Chamunda Devi, Deoth Sidh, Baijnath etc.
Dharamshala, McLeodganj a hill resort is about 80 kms from
Hamirpur. During March the weather is pleasant and tempera-

ture is about 25 C.
SITE SEEING TOURS: Post workshop site seeing tours for
the delegates may be arranged on 08th March 2020 as per route
mentioned below: Hamirpur-Jwalaji-Chamunda Devi-
Dharamsala-McLeodganj and back. An additional nominal fee
may be charged on account of this. A minimum of 20 partici-
pants is required for each excursion.
ACCOMODATION: Accommodation will be provided in
the institute student hostels/guest house on twin-sharing basis
for out-station participants.
CERTIFICATE: Certificate will be given to the participants
after successful completion of the course.
RESOURCE PERSONS: Faculty members of NIT Ha-
mirpur, experts from premier institutes like IITs, NITs, and
from nearby reputed central universities will deliver lec-
tures, followed by interactive practical sessions on the sub-
jects.
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING:
The department of Mechanical Engineering came in to exist-
ence in the year 1986 and served as catering department to
other disciplines. The department started offering UG pro-
gramme leading to four year Bachelor of Technology degree
in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1994. The department
is supported by potential and devoted faculty members. The
research potential of faculties of this department is wit-
nessed through published books, research papers in journals
of both national and international repute and sponsored pro-
jects funded by various funding agencies such as CSIR,
DST, UGC and MHRD. Also, the faculty has the credit of
successful guidance of Ph.D. scholars in addition to impart-
ing teaching to B. Tech., M. Tech. classes of relevant disci-
plines. The department is equipped with ultramodern infra-
structural, computing as well as laboratories equipped with
advanced research facilities.
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY HA-
MIRPUR: The institute came into existence on August 7,
1986 as Regional Engineering College Hamirpur in Ha-
mirpur, Himachal Pradesh, India, it was a joint enterprise of
the Government of India and the Government of Himachal
Pradesh. On June 26, 2002, the institute was awarded the
status of deemed university and upgraded into a National
Institute of Technology. It was awarded the status of Insti-
tute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament along
with other NITs and IITs. NIT Hamirpur has been ranked as
best NIT in terms of infrastructure by the World Bank in
2007. The Institute provide Undergraduate, Postgraduate
and Doctorate Education in Engineering, Sciences & Hu-
manities; fostering the spirit of national integration among
the students, a close interaction with industry and a strong
