Object :

This document describes how to connect create a End User in server Side ( Web application),
and then how to register ( Client Side)

1. SERVER SIDE / USER AND LICENCE SETUP


Licence should be created at first
Then End User linked to this licence should be created

Server address
http://chartservice.maris.no/

Log as Chart Service“ user Role to create License and then End User

1.1 Create Company


Ships Owner should be entered at first if not already done.

Go to Menu Start/Clients/Companies and fill up form.

Press “Create” to create the company, or save when editing and changing parameter.

1.2 Create Vessel


Go to Menu Start/Clients/IMO Vessels and fill up with 3 following parameters.
IMO vessels will be populated later by Import

1.3 Create License

Select Licence,
Page with List of Licence is open

Then on the top left Select “Create new”

Then Fill up all necessary information for each component as

ENC License : Type should Full ,ID should filled up ( 5 digits + 1 UpperCase letter )
Date to be filled up according to license.

IMO and Call Sign fields will be checked against IMO vessels list in database.

AVCS License : Type should Full ,ID should filled up ( 5 digits + 1 UpperCase letter )
Date to be filled up according to license.

1.4 Create End User


In the end of Licence Window, in End User Frame, press + Add New

Fill up parameters as following :

Then Save End User Information In the End User Window

And then Save End User in Licence Window as below

1.5 Import Holding from MDS


In case the user has already an account in MDS server, and in order to populate his account with
Holdings he might have from before, it is possible to import holdings
- From permit.txt file (ENC collection)
- From ScheduleA.pdf file (AVCS collection)

1.5.1 ENC
In relevant License page, use button “Import Holdings From Permit File

This function will setup Holding as defined in permit file.


It should be used for initial setup from MDS account.
Warning : it will replace existing holding if present.

Select the file and press Import

Operation Status is popped up

Holding for given license can be checked as following :

1.5.2 AVCS
In relevant License page, use button “Import Schedule A” to import AVCS holding.

This function will setup Holding as defined in permit file.


It should be used for initial setup from MDS account.
Warning : it will replace existing holding if present.

Select the file and press Import

2. CLIENT APPLICATION
2.1 Software installation
Default Folders are the same as in MDS :
C:\Digital Service
C:\Mariner Data

Remark : it Is possible to specify different location during installation.

2.1.1 MDS II Clean Installation when MDS not installed from before
Run Installer “DigitalServiceSetup.exe”

2.1.2 MDS II Installation on the top of MDS


Before start, stop both MDS and MDS client if running.

2.1.2.1 MDS Backup procedure


In order to be able to run MDS after MDS2 was installed :

2.1.2.1.1 Backup folders


Copy C:\MarinerData to C:\MarinerData-MDS
Copy C:\Digital Service to C:\Digital Service-MDS

Rename C:\Program Files\MARIS\MARIS Digital Service Client


to
C:\Program Files\MARIS\MARIS Digital Service Client-MDS

2.1.2.1.2 Backup registry ( renaming MDS keys)


Run regedit

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MARIS\Digital Service


Rename “Digital Service” to “Digital Service-MDS”

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MARIS\MDSCli


Rename “MDSCli” to “MDSCli-MDS”

As described below :

2.1.2.2 Compatibility Preparation

2.1.2.2.1 ENC Charts


All files included in C:\MarinerData\publications\ENC Charts
should be deleted

2.1.2.2.2 Paper Charts


C:\MarinerData\publications\paper Charts\ChartList.ctl
should be deleted

2.1.2.3 Run Installer

Run Installer “DigitalServiceSetup.exe” from media.

Paths for ”Digital Service” folder and ”Mariner Data” Folder should be kept as in previous
installation.

2.1.3 MDS previous installation Restore

2.1.3.1.1 Restore folders


Delete C:\MarinerData
Delete C:\Digital Service

Rename C:\MarinerData-MDS to C:\MarinerData


Rename C:\Digital Service-MDS to C:\Digital Service

Delete C:\Program Files\MARIS\MARIS Digital Service Client

Rename C:\Program Files\MARIS\MARIS Digital Service Client-MDS


to

2.1.3.1.2 restore registry ( renaming MDS keys)


Run regedit

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MARIS\Digital Service


Delete

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MARIS\Digital Service-MDS


Rename “Digital Service-MDS” to “Digital Service”

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MARIS\MDSCli


Delete

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MARIS\MDSCli-MDS


Rename “MDSCli-MDS” to “MDSCli”

2.1.3.1.3 Run Software

2.2 Running Software


The 2 Softwares MDSII application and MDSClient for HTPPS connection are located in

Chart Manager.exe in C:\Digital Service\bin

MDSClientApp.exe in C:\Program Files\MARIS\MARIS Digital Service Client

2.2.1 Windows Vista / Windows 7


Both Applications should be run as Administrator, and User should be native Windows
administrator user.

2.3 Communication method setup

Select appropriate method.

Refer to chapter 4 for Email Setup, or chapter 5 for HTTPS Setup.

2.4 Activation
User should be already created in server.

3. SOFTWARE UPGRADE
Upgrade module are available on the server. Dialog will warn user when a new version is ready
on the server

4. EMAIL CONFIGURATION

There is 2 parts :
Email addresses used by application
SMTP and POP server, used for communication when “email mode” is selected.
Most of parameters are located in [EMail] section in Chart Planner.ini file

4.1 email addresses used by MDS application


Menu Settings/Subscription button to open the configuration window :

4.1.1 MDS Server email address


All requests are sent to this email address.

4.1.2 MDS-Storage email


Address is mds-backup@mds.maris.no

If selected, all Weekly updates are sent to this address for a later downloading :
( can not be changed)

4.1.3 Ship email address


All emails “Answer” sent by server after any request will be sent TO “Ship email address” by
default. ( refer to “Contact MDS” window displayed under)
This address can be selected from menu for Weekly Update also

4.1.4 Manual selection of email address Answer


In case of “Order Request”, it is possible to redirect answer to a different email address, or MDS-
Storage (mds-backup@mds.maris.no) server in case of “order” request. This option could be
used if expected answer is to big for “ship bandwidth” in terms of amount of data.

Above button, it is possible to


select other email addresses or MDS-storage
(MDS-Restore) server in the list

4.1.5 Office email address


Office email address.
This address can be selected from menu for Weekly Update

4.1.6 Weekly Update eMail address


Sending weekly update
 By default the check box "Send weekly update to the address" is checked
ON
 When the check box is ON the weekly updates are sent to the selected email
address which is per default the ship email address
 To select another address click on the small arrow and select the address in
the pop up list
 To add an email address to the list select new
 If MDS-Storage is selected the weekly update are not sent to the ship
but are stored in MDS server and accessible by request.
 If the check box is checked OFF the weekly updates are not sent by email but
are stored in MDS server and accessible by request.

Any of Previous address can be used for Weekly update sending, as mentioned before.

4.1.7 Email size limit


All email providers have a size limit to the email to be sent to the ship. If the email
size exceeds the limit the email is rejected by the email provider
Therefore it is extremely important to enter the email size limit. The MDS Server
always checks that the size of the email sent back to the ship does not exceed this
limit.
When Answer size is bigger that configured value, MDS server will split answer in
several mails.
Example : MDSReply2_0102 and MDSReply2_0202 if 2 mails are necessary.

4.1.8 Answer Validity


Conditions of validity are :
- Sender = chartservice@chartservice.maris.no OR mds-restore@mds.maris.no (NOT
Configurable)
- Subject as “RE:MDS *”
- Attached file matching with file name, structure, checksum generated from MDS server.

If attachment correspond to another account ( password is checked) , “Not Authorized Answer”


is displayed.

Digital Service Log.txt in C:\Digital Service folder report files fetched by MDS client.

4.2 Email for communication - Pop and SMTP configuration

This is parameters for email servers used in “email mode” for


communication.

Right Click on “Check Inbox” button in Email mode to get following screen :

4.2.1 SMTP
Any available SMTP server or server/account can be used for sending request : address “FROM”
is not checked by server. This allows to send Request ( Subject “MDS” and attachment ) from
any “Communication PC.
( Provided by ship owner)

4.2.2 POP
Any available POP server/account can be used to receive answer. Only message as to follow the
rules described in paragraph 4.1.8
( Provided by ship owner)

4.3 POP SMTP Troubleshooting

4.3.1 Common information :

4.3.1.1 Start a Dos prompt

Dos Command window allows to run command like PING, TRACERT ( TraceRoute) ,
NSLOOKUP, and TELNET useful in this situation.

4.3.1.2 PING
Most of email server deactivate ping function, then ping request will not be answered.
Test is not significant if no Answer.
Test is significant if answer

4.3.1.3 NSLOOKUP

NSLOOKUP should be checked for both OP and SMTP if server name is is used on board
instead of IP address.

4.3.2 POP
Login and Password are always required to connect to the server.

4.3.2.3 Step By Step tracking method

Type: telnet "the name of the pop3 server" 110

( 110 is default port for POP)

4.3.3 SMTP
Login and Password are not always required to connect to the server.

-If “Use Authentication” option is OFF and Account requires authentication.

4.3.3.2 Step By Step tracking method

Start a Dos prompt as described for POP, and start Telnet tool connected to SMTP server.

Enter "telnet smtp-server-name 25"

Note There are different versions of Microsoft SMTP or third party SMTP servers, and you may
receive different responses from the receiving server. What is important is that you receive the
220 response with the FQDN of the server and the version of SMTP. Additionally, all versions
of Microsoft SMTP include the term "Microsoft" in the 220 response.

Start communication by typing the following command:


EHLO test.com

5. HTTPS CONFIGURATION
It is nothing to do with HTTPS configuration except select the HTTPS mode in main page in
MDS.
However, for Windows Vista or Seven, it could be that Certificates Installation has to be done
manually if PC do not allow automatic installation.

5.1 Problem identification


When MDS Client log windows do not pass first step, click link to “Details”:

5.2 Check Maris Certificate installation

5.2.1 Create Certificates Management Console


Open mmc windows with “Run” and mmc command

Select Add/ Remove Snap in in File menu

Select Certificates and press Add to complete the list.

Select Computer Account option

And then Local computer option, press Finish

List is modified

Press OK to validate

Use Menu “File” option “Save as” to save Certificates Management Console options.

Close window and press Yes in order to save options :

5.2.2 Check MARIS certificate presence


Run mmc, and open newly created Management Console (CertificatesManagementConsole.msc
file)

Check presence of Maris Root certificates in path described as following :


Console Root/ Certificates( local) / Trusted Root/ Certificates :

If absent, this is the reason of connection problem.

5.3 How to install Maris Certificate

5.3.1 Save MARIS Certificate on the PC

In Internet browser, enter following address :


www.maris.no/maris-ca.crt

Popup Window is opened :

Choose Save and save in a temporary folder file maris-ca.cer

Open mmc console as described before, and select Action/Import :
