The Garcian Publication Joined 2019 Campus Journalism Seminar-Workshop

Kalio, Aklan – Campus journalists of Garcia College of Technology with its publication The
Garcian felt that they are more enhanced and equipped now after attending the Campus
Journalism Seminar Workshop of the Philippine Information Agency Series of 2019 at The
Grand Hotel, Iloilo City last October 15 to 17.

In line with this, PIA-6 aimed to provide a more thorough seminar-workshop which offered skills
training perspectives in essential journalism techniques including campus paper publication and
page design and lay-out, news, feature, editorial, sports, online and data journalism, and
practical ways to use visual journalism (editorial cartooning and photojournalism) to improve the
skills in the realm of reporting current events and storytelling of student writers. The seminar-
workshop sessions include also the copy reading and headline writing.

PIA-6 regional training officer Leonard T. Pineda I firstly tackled the training perspectives and
core principles of journalism. He provided points for the function of the campus paper.

Various lecture presentations and workshops were also given and facilitated by reputable
speakers. Tara Katherine Yap, Regional News Coordinator-Manila Bulletin, gave a lecture on
news writing. Yap reminded the journalists to always be accurate of how they carry out
information in making news article. She discussed elements of news as well. Lecture for feature
writing was introduced by Columnist/Lifestyle Writer-Panay News, Rhick Lars Albay. Some of
the strategies in doing copy reading and headlining were elaborated by Dr. Ian Espada, the
Chair, WVSU COC division of Journalism.

On the other hand, the lecture and workshop on writing articles, editorial and cartooning were
given and facilitated by the editor-in-chief of Daily Guardian, Francis Allan Angelo. He provided
a step-to-step discussion on the writing and drawing process. Data Journalism was also
introduced by Ted Aldwin Ong, a Writer of Iloilo Metropolitan Times. Some of the strategies in
doing copy reading and headlining were by Dr. Ian Espada, the Chair, WVSU COC division of
Journalism. The CNN correspondent Elyrose Naorbe gave a talk about the essentials of sport
writing. Mary Katherine Villalon, founder of Iloilo mentioned the importance of online journalism.
The lecture on Photojournalism was given by Leo Solinap, Correspondent, GMA News Online.
Solinap introduced some techniques in capturing photos that tell a story behind his success.
Moreover, Dr. Zoilo S. Andrada Jr., associate Professor, UP Visayas, discussed and facilitated
the last workshop of page design and lay-out.

At the end of the 3-day intensive workshop, invited resource speakers evaluated the entries and
numerous awards were given and recognized to those who completed to pass their done
papers after every workshop sessions during the closing ceremony.

One of the Staff writers of The Garcian Publication has given and award for being the Most
Promising Editorial and Feature Writer in Filipino during the said event.

A total of 23 publications from region six, including the two tertiary levels from batch 1 attended
the seminar workshop.
