1.0 SCOPE
2.0 GENERAL
The minimum size of piping running along piperacks or tracks shall be 2".
Requirements for safety clearances shall be in accordance with Figures 1 & 2 and
table III.
The minimum headroom over main roads and crane accessways shall be
5500mm.
Concrete elevations for paving and point of support shall be in accordance with
table IV.
Stairways should be arranged with the angle of slope between 34 degrees and 38
degrees to the horizontal. Only in exceptional circumstances should slopes up to
45 degrees be provided.
Ladders shall preferably be arranged for side exit. The maximum rise of ladders
should be preferable 6000mm, but shall not exceed 9000mm (see Appendix 1 &
2).

PIPING DESIGN SPEC
Access, as stated in Table II, shall be provided at any item of equipment which
requires regular attention for operation or servicing while the plant or equipment is
in commission and which is located more than 2 m above grade level or another
platform.
On Piping Studies the platform elevations given are Top of Steel, this does not
include grating which is 25mm thick and must be taken into consideration for
headroom clearances.
The internal radius of circular platforms shall be determined from the following
formulae: -
IRP = IRV + PCP + VWT + 75
Table 4.1 above shows values for PCP and VIT for hot vessels.
For layout purposes the bracket spacing for circular platforms will be as follows: -
All brackets shall straddle the primary axes (N-S and E-W centrelines) except for
the 60 degree spacing.

5.0 MANWAYS
The distance between pipes shall allow for the turning of a spectacle blind, if
present.
Operational valves in overhead pipe racks shall be provided with platform access.
This includes battery limit isolation valves. Branch isolation valves, only used
during plant shutdown, do not require permanent access.
Valves shall be easily accessible for operation and maintenance and shall be
operable from a permanent floor level. The operating device shall as specified in
Attachment III
Control valves shall be located at grade or on first level platforms, except when
specifically required for process or operational reasons.
Valves with an extended bonnet, in liquid service from -20° C to -50°C, shall be
installed with the stem vertical or with a maximum inclination of 60° from the
vertical.
Drain valves in liquid service operating below -20°C shall be installed with the stem
in the vertical position. These drain connections should be braced to the process
line.

PIPING DESIGN SPEC
Low temperature service valves having no flow and a trapped gas bubble to
protect the valve seat from the low temperature (such as vents and pressure
gauges) may be installed with the stem in the horizontal position.
Inlet lines to relief valves and depressurising valves shall be self-draining to the
process equipment. Block valves in RV lines shall be installed with handwheel
stem in the horizontal.
All spading positions or other means of positive isolation, e.g. removable spool
pieces, which require access during routine operation, shall be provided with
permanent access.
9.0 INSTRUMENTS
Control valves up to and including 8" shall have a minimum rating of 300# in
process services and match the pipe class (i.e. minimum 150#) in utility services.
For sizes greater than 8", the flange pressure rating shall be the same as the pipe
class. See table 9.1 for list of utility systems.

PIPING DESIGN SPEC
Orifice flanges may be placed in either horizontal or vertical runs of pipe, but in the
case of vertical runs the direction of flow permissible is down for wet gases and up
for liquids containing vapour. The minimum rating for orifice flanges is 300#, but
the rating of the orifice taps shall be as per the line class. Orifice plates in ring type
joint specs require orifice carriers.
The minimum straight lengths for orifice meter runs expressed in nominal pipe
diameter D, shall be in accordance with the unbracketed figures for a beta ratio of
0.7 (see table V). Where these figures are not reasonably practicable the actual
beta ratio and/or the bracketed values may be applied, but all such cases must
have the written acceptance of the Instrument Engineer.
10.0 COMPRESSORS
Interstage and discharge piping shall be sufficiently flexible to allow expansion due
to the heat of compression.
The suction line between a knockout drum and the compressor shall be as short
as practicable, without pockets, and fall towards the knockout drum, unless noted
otherwise on P & ID's.
11.0 PUMPS
Pump suction piping shall be as short and as direct as possible, avoiding high
points where pockets of vapour can accumulate. If the suction nozzle is smaller
than connecting piping, an eccentric reducer installed top flat shall be used. If the
discharge nozzle differs in size to the discharge line, a concentric reducer shall be
used.
A minimum length of straight pipe from the last elbow to the suction nozzle (which
shall not include any strainer or stop-flow valve) shall be as follows:
Vertical, close coupled pumps - 11/2 pipe diameters when the elbow is in the
same plane as the pump shaft.
- 4 pipe diameters when the elbow is in a plane at
right angles to the pump shaft.
Single suction pump, a) if the suction nozzle is on the top of the pump

In order to avoid a fire hazard, lubricating oil, control oil and seal oil lines shall not
be routed in the vicinity of hot process and hot utility lines.
Piping to columns should drop or rise immediately after the nozzle and close to the
column. For ease of support a number of lines can be routed together, parallel in
one plane.
Piping to and from separators shall interfere as little as possible with the working of
the separator. The following constraints should be observed:
• The uses of valves or reducers within ten pipe diameters of the inlet nozzle are
not permitted, unless noted otherwise on the P&IDs.
• If bends cannot be avoided within ten pipe diameters of the inlet nozzle, the
bend must be in the vertical plane through the axis of the inlet nozzle.

Diameter D and are measured from the flange facing of the measuring element,
Except when pipe tapings are used.
3. Also for a Tee, if flow is from one branch only.

5. With gradual change in diameter, preferably not exceeding 30°.
6. Also applicable to reducers and expanders not complying with Note 5.
7. For rectangular Venturi tubes D = W.H and d + w.h.
In which W and H are width and height of duct,
And w and h are width and height of throat, respectively.
8. Values shown apply to Pitot tubes and Pitot-Venturi tubes located at the pipe

1.1 Scope
This Technical Standard shows the fabrication and shop assembly details of
safety ladders provided in structures for regular operational access/egress.
These details are intended to be issued to fabricators supplying these ladders
and to the field for use in installation.
2.0 DESIGN
2.1 General
2.1.1 The design drawings and data sheets specify the location, orientation, and
arrangement of ladders for regular operational use, special fabrication details,
and any changes to the requirements of this standard.
2.1.2 Single ladder runs for operational access shall not exceed 30 feet (9000 mm)
from grade to platform or from platform to platform.
2.1.3 All ladders, except those located at grade with runs less than 10 feet (3000 mm)
are caged.
2.1.4 For all ladders, access/egress points above grade shall be provided with a
vertical swing, self-closing safety gate that is attached to the handrail post.
2.1.5 Ladders complete with cages are to be fabricated and shop assembled by
welding.
2.1.6 Field connections for ladders are limited to mechanical engagement and field
bolting.
