platform.

On Piping Studies the platform elevations given are Top of Steel, this does not
include grating which is 25mm thick and must be taken into consideration for
headroom clearances.

Platforms for access to level instruments on vessels must be sized to ensure

adequate space for operation and maintenance. This is particularly important in
600# and 900# service when the valves are larger. For circular platform details see
Appendix 2.

The internal radius of circular platforms shall be determined from the following
formulae: -
IRP = IRV + PCP + VWT + 75

IRP = Inside Radius of Platform IRV = Inside Radius of Vessel

PCP = Platform Clip Projection VWT = Vessel Wall Thickness
VIT = Vessel Insulation Thickness

Vessel Operating VIT PCP

Temp °C mm mm

Orifice flanges may be placed in either horizontal or vertical runs of pipe, but in the
case of vertical runs the direction of flow permissible is down for wet gases and up
for liquids containing vapour. The minimum rating for orifice flanges is 300#, but
the rating of the orifice taps shall be as per the line class. Orifice plates in ring type
joint specs require orifice carriers.

The minimum straight lengths for orifice meter runs expressed in nominal pipe
diameter D, shall be in accordance with the unbracketed figures for a beta ratio of
0.7 (see table V). Where these figures are not reasonably practicable the actual
beta ratio and/or the bracketed values may be applied, but all such cases must
have the written acceptance of the Instrument Engineer.

10.0 COMPRESSORS

Interstage and discharge piping shall be sufficiently flexible to allow expansion due
to the heat of compression.

The suction line between a knockout drum and the compressor shall be as short
as practicable, without pockets, and fall towards the knockout drum, unless noted
otherwise on P & ID's.

11.0 PUMPS

Pump suction piping shall be as short and as direct as possible, avoiding high
points where pockets of vapour can accumulate. If the suction nozzle is smaller
than connecting piping, an eccentric reducer installed top flat shall be used. If the
discharge nozzle differs in size to the discharge line, a concentric reducer shall be
used.

A minimum length of straight pipe from the last elbow to the suction nozzle (which
shall not include any strainer or stop-flow valve) shall be as follows:

Vertical, close coupled pumps - 11/2 pipe diameters when the elbow is in the
same plane as the pump shaft.
- 4 pipe diameters when the elbow is in a plane at
right angles to the pump shaft.

Single suction pumps, - 3 pipe diameters,

end-suction type

Single suction pump, a) if the suction nozzle is on the top of the pump
top-top connections casing

- 11/2 pipe diameters when the elbow is in the

same plane as the pump shaft.
- 4 pipe diameters when the elbow is in a plane at
right angles to the pump shaft.

P:\6683ln- Page 11 of 30

PIPING DESIGN SPEC

b) if the suction nozzle is a long radius elbow

connected to the pump end cover

- 11/2 pipe diameters when the elbow is in the

same plane as the pump shaft and suction
nozzle.
- 4 pipe diameters when the elbow is in a plane at
right angles to the suction nozzle.

Double suction pumps - 3 pipe diameters when elbows are installed at

right angles to the pump shaft.
- 5 to 10 pipe diameters may be required when
elbows are installed in any other plane. The
avoidance of unequal flow at the impeller eye
requires investigation with this arrangement;
therefore the Machinery Engineers approval
should be sought.

In order to avoid a fire hazard, lubricating oil, control oil and seal oil lines shall not
be routed in the vicinity of hot process and hot utility lines.

12.0 PRESSURE VESSEL PIPING

Piping to columns should drop or rise immediately after the nozzle and close to the
column. For ease of support a number of lines can be routed together, parallel in
one plane.

Piping to and from separators shall interfere as little as possible with the working of
the separator. The following constraints should be observed:

• The uses of valves or reducers within ten pipe diameters of the inlet nozzle are
not permitted, unless noted otherwise on the P&IDs.

• If bends cannot be avoided within ten pipe diameters of the inlet nozzle, the
bend must be in the vertical plane through the axis of the inlet nozzle.

13.0 NOZZLE PROJECTIONS

Vessel Shell and Skirts: -

The minimum nozzle projection for nozzles in vessel shells and from vertical
vessel skirts shall be determined using the Nozzle Standout program, located in A

2. Within a horizontal 21500 mm radius from the outside edge of the stack.
Platforms allowing unrestricted access located outside of this radius shall be at
least 3600mm below a line extending upward 45° from the horizontal (projected
top of the stack) at the end of the 21500 mm radius.

3. Within a horizontal 20 x Do radius (1500 mm min., 10700 mm max) from the

outside edge of pressurised relief or vent outlet piping. Platforms or flat roofs
allowing unrestricted access located outside of this radius shall be at least
3600 min below a line extending upwards 45° from the horizontal (projected top
of the vent) at the end of the determined horizontal radius.

4. Figure 2 is applicable for generalised vents only. Where there is concern for
safety, toxicity, or fire radiant flux, specialised calculations shall be performed
to determine the horizontal radius distance from the vent.

5. The discharge of steam, air or similar non-flammable vapours from relief

valves, safety valves, and continuously operating vents, shall be located to
prevent hazard to personnel.

6. Control houses and switch rooms shall generally be considered to be in a safe

area if located 15 000 mm or more from the nearest source of flammable
hazard. When not located in a safe area, they shall be of pressurised design
with the air intake stack located in a safe area or height.

7. Sumps or sewer boxes under or adjacent to yard racks shall have vents run to
a safe place above the yard and be in compliance with Item 6 of Table III.

8. Distances from furnace to equipment shall be measured from the outside of the
nearest of the furnace walls to the nearest part of the equipment considered.

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This Technical Standard shows the fabrication and shop assembly details of
safety ladders provided in structures for regular operational access/egress.
These details are intended to be issued to fabricators supplying these ladders
and to the field for use in installation.

2.0 DESIGN

2.1 General

2.1.1 The design drawings and data sheets specify the location, orientation, and
arrangement of ladders for regular operational use, special fabrication details,
and any changes to the requirements of this standard.

2.1.2 Single ladder runs for operational access shall not exceed 30 feet (9000 mm)
from grade to platform or from platform to platform.

2.1.3 All ladders, except those located at grade with runs less than 10 feet (3000 mm)
are caged.

2.1.4 For all ladders, access/egress points above grade shall be provided with a
vertical swing, self-closing safety gate that is attached to the handrail post.

2.1.5 Ladders complete with cages are to be fabricated and shop assembled by
