of Medicine, the University of Indonesia in 1988. After graduating, Joserizal
continued his specialist education in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at
the University of Indonesia. He completed his specialist education in 1999.

Humanitarian Activist

On August 14, 1999, Joserizal founded MER-C. The establishment of MER-C

stems from the fire of humanitarian conflict that plagued Ambon, Maluku,
east Indonesia at that time.

University of Indonesia students who are members of the University of

Indonesia Student Medical Team (TMM-UI) were sent to Ambon in April
1999. Joserizal was one of the dispatched teams.

There, they saw an imbalance in medical services. There are those who get
logistical support and medical services properly, but there are those who do
not get it.

Through its mission, MER-C wants to broadcast throughout the world the
values of Islam and humanity. Joserizal assessed that help was given based on
urgency regardless of religious, ethnic and political background.

From this phenomenon, Joserizal and his friends founded Mer-C which
operates in the field of medical emergencies and has a nature of trust,
professional, neutral, independent, voluntary, and high mobility. Not only
domestically, but MER-C's efforts also helped extend and extend
humanitarian assistance to conflict countries, starting from Iraq, Iran,
Afghanistan, Palestine, Thailand, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan Kasmir

In the official MER-C website accessed by CNNIndonesia.com, MER-C has

sent more than 124 humanitarian missions to various regions in the country
including 2 missions to Afghanistan (US Aggression to Afghanstan), 1 mission
to Iraq (USA invasion to Irak) , 1 mission to Iran (Bam earquake, under the
auspices of the Indonesian Ministry of Health ), 1 mission to Thailand, 2
missions to Pakistan Kashmir, 1 mission to South Lebanon (after war 2006), 1
mission to Sudan (Sudan conflict), 1 mission to Somalia, 2 missions to
Palestine (Israel aggression to the Gaza Strip) and 5 missions to Palestine
related with the construction of the Indonesian Hospital. He aslo inisiated
build Indonesian Hospital in conflict area Rakhine, Myanmar.

Joserizal often intervened directly to be a medical volunteer in these conflict

areas. Undeniably, Jose Rizal is the most famous humanitarian doctor in
Indonesia, especially ready to serve in conflict areas.

Because of his courage and integrity as a doctor, he is often asked to carry out
health checks for political prisoners, terrorist suspects, and even foreign
embassies often ask for help to provide a check-up of their citizens in
Indonesian prisons.

The final work has not yet been completed, and his team is trying to uncover
the deaths of more than 700 election workers in the last presidential election
in Indonesia which the government declared a normal death. But it was not
finished until his death.

This brave doctor is hard to find instead, his sincerity and courage often
confront the security forces and political bureaucracy when conducting
missions at home and abroad.

Former Vice President Yusuf Kalla, Minister of Health, Chair of the Advisory
Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council, Prof. Din Syamsuddin, the
Indonesian Doctors Association, politicians, military officials, community
leaders, and many activists were present in praying jenazah in Masjid
Silaturrahim.
