3. (a) A train passes through a station with a constant speed. A stationary observer at the station at

Hz when it leaves the station. If the sound velocity in air is 330 m/s, then find the tone of the
whistle and speed of the train.
(b) Find the characteristics vibration frequencies for the system of masses and springs shown in
the figure. What are the normal modes of vibration?

(c) A thin sheet of transparent material (𝜇 = 1.6) is placed in the path of one of the interfering
beams in a biprism experiment using light of wavelength 6000 𝐴𝑜 . The central fringe shifts to a
position originally occupied by 12th bright fringe. Calculate the thickness of the sheet.

7. (a) Differentiate between Fresnel’s and Fraunhofer diffraction.

(c) Deri8ve the intensity distribution function for double slit diffraction. Find the conditions for
