I started praying for the sick at healing
workshops and we were very surprised to
see quite a lot of people getting better. Then
some years later I was looking around the
Catholic world and I thought we needed in
the Catholic Church what Wimber has done
for the Evangelicals. So I wrote this thing
called ‘The Charism School’ and the first time
we ran it we saw a jump in the number of
miraculous healings. Soon we were running
it all over the world. The healing model we
used was based on what we had learnt
from John Wimber ie the giving of words of
knowledge then in response people receiving
prayer for healing and often being healed.

wheelchair and walked for six minutes
through 17,000 people to the stage to
the ecstatic cheers of the huge crowd.
Jesus is alive!
Some years later I read Smith Wigglesworth’s
book, Ever Increasing Faith. In it there is a
passage describing how at a service for 800
people in South Africa 500 had been healed
by the end of the evening, and I began crying
out to God: ‘Let me see that before I die!’
A couple of months later we ran a service
in Tanzania and there were 1200 people
present. After only an hour and a half 800
had received physical healings.
Faith is an act
This was still using the word of knowledge
model. However the next year I was asked to
lead a massive healing rally and we had only
half an hour for the healing time because the
police insisted that the event closed at 6pm.
I had read that Wigglesworth had prayed
over crowds without laying hands and seen
huge numbers of healings so I resolved to
do the same. I asked people to stand up by
categories eg problems with limbs or ears or
eyes. Then I invited the Christians present to
lay their hands upon these people as I invited
the power of the Holy Spirit to come. I then
simply commanded the condition to be healed
in Jesus name and mass instantaneous
healings took place with uncountable
numbers proclaiming themselves healed
including the blind, deaf, dumb, lame etc. I
started doing this wherever I went and I found
that it didn’t matter whether I was in Africa,
England or anywhere else God did huge
numbers of physical healings.
Reading Wigglesworth was a water shed for
me and took me up another level into what
‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you . . .’ Matthew 7: 7
he called ‘wholesale healing’. It was also a
breakthough for me when I understood that
faith is not essentially a feeling but an act.
I don’t have to feel a surge of faith when
using the word of command for healing.
Sometimes I do but it’s not essential. When
I’m speaking those words of command, I
do so out of obedience because Jesus said
these signs will follow those who believe.
To do that you have to have got over your
concern about what the crowd are going to
think and fix your eyes on the Lord.
I think people often confuse what I call
‘creedal faith’ with the charism of faith.
They have prayed over people who have not
been healed and then in puzzlement said
to themselves ‘But I believe miracles can
happen why aren’t I seeing them?’ People
think that because they believe that miracles
can happen today, they have the power to
make it happen. But it’s not the same thing.
People have been taught poorly about the
dynamic of faith. The charism of faith is not just
knowing this can happen. but the power of God
in us to make it happen.
Being honest with God
The charism of faith is not something you
can muscle up. It is a gift but one we can
pray for. Being honest with ourselves and
the Lord seems to be key. In my journey
there are points I come to when I say ‘Lord I
haven’t got the faith for this level of healing’
e.g. brain damage. I’m just honest with the
Lord and I say ‘Lord give me the faith for
this.’ I get on my knees and I tell the Lord
the truth about where I am and pray to be
taken further and God has answered. But it’s
not only honesty and prayer that is needed,
I also feed my faith by reading the scriptural
promises over and over and watching the
miraculous ministries of others.
Seeing is believing
In the services where most of the healings
take place, we first have a time of praise

including during the week before the
service and went back for more tests the
week after. Before the Miracle Healing
Service her medical documents show she
was blood type AB negative. In the week
after the service many blood samples
were taken and tested in several medical
facilities in the country and all of them
showed that she was now a completely
new blood type, type ‘O’. Her medical
documents state that there is ‘no medical
explanation’ for this. The Lord had given
her a blood transfusion and she was
completely healed. Jesus is alive!

short film of miracles from previous services
to build up faith. Next I get people to repent
and to forgive. We saw a woman get out of
a wheel chair after she forgave her sister
having not spoken to her for 40 years.
Following the service not knowing where she
lived, she tracked her down and they were
instantaneously reconciled.
Sometimes the Lord then gives me words of
knowledge but not always. Following this I
work through categories. The first category is
limbs. I say if you’ve got a problem with your
shoulder, neck, arms, hands, legs and so on
please stand up. Then I say to the Christians
next to them please put your hands on the
part which is not working and then we pray
and call down the Holy Spirit. After a couple
of minutes, usually when I feel a nudge from
the Lord, I speak to those parts of the body
just as Jesus said to the leper ‘Be clean’.
Having commanded the conditions to be
healed I say to the people ‘Now, do what you
couldn’t do’ and people just do what they
couldn’t do before, often in their hundreds.

We have a sifting system so that those who
have received the greater healings – though
every healing however small is wonderful
– can come to the stage and give a testimony.
When they have finished testifying we praise
the Lord and move on to the next category
which is usually eyes and ears and cancers
and tumors. Then the same thing happens.
Miracles open people to God
After all of that we have an altar call and
we have seen very large numbers of people
come to the Lord for the first time or who
have really fallen away and are in grievous
sin come back to the Lord. The miracles just
open people right up. In Croatia for instance
there was an ardent Communist who was
married to a Catholic but would not have
religion mentioned in the house. He had been
baptized a Catholic but never went to church
after he was seven. He came to the service
after a conversation with his son in law
and seeing the miracles received the grace
of conversion. Since then he prays with
his wife most days and goes to weekday
mass. His wife says he’s a changed man.
When we are in Africa sometimes Muslims
come forward in their Muslim clothes, give
their lives to the Lord and five minutes later
they are singing in tongues. This altar call
is sometimes followed by an opportunity
for people to come forward to the team for
general ministry.
At the end of a service we have a time when
people are invited to hold up before the Lord
the names of their loved ones who are sick
and are not present. I remember in London
a woman held up the name of her father in
India who for two weeks had been in a coma.
When we prayed that prayer the Lord’s grace
reached to his hospital bed in India and he
instantly woke up from the coma. Sometimes
people who can’t attend the service gather
and listen to the service down the phone.
A priest who came to the service phoned
up his sister and she got a group together
in their home back in the village and when
they came to the various categories the
deaf or the lame etc they put their hands on
them and they heard my word of command
down the phone to everybody. Of the 11
people there seven were healed including
the priest’s deaf father and two lame women
who had been carried to the house both of

We always give an explaination about why
some are healed and others not so people
don’t go home feeling unloved. We never
take a collection of any kind at our Miracle
Healing Services so that everyone knows the
Lord’s grace and healing is free.
The poor are a gift.
When there are poorer people present at
a service we see more miracles. The poor
know their need and somehow change the
faith atmosphere. In the same way people
from ethnic minorities in this country,
whatever their financial situation, seem to
have more faith when it comes to miracles.
These groups are a special gift in these
services and act as a kind of lever for us
poor Westerners who have got a bit bogged
down in our rationalism. That is not to say
this ministry is irrational rather, as John
Wimber used to say ‘trans-rational’. Once we
were asked to do a healing service in Estoril,
a wealthy city in Northern Portugal, and I
said to the man who had invited us: ‘There
will be many more healings if there are poor
people present’. So they brought in coach
loads of poor people from the south and
there were an amazing number of healings
among both poor and rich alike. However this
is not to say we see nothing among middle
class white communities for we see the Lord
performing great healings at all our services;
it is just a matter of degree.
The discovery of the charism of faith has
been such a liberation. I just don’t have to
strain. I tell people ‘straining starts when
output exceeds input’. I feel we are coming
into a new season in the supernatural. I
think it will be characterised by faith for the
miraculous, humility and unity, underpinned

by a deep life of prayer and purity. I
remember talking to J John about three
years ago and we both agreed that there had
been a shift in expectation among people. It
wasn’t just to do with what God was doing in
us but what God was is doing in his people.
A few weeks ago Pope Francis said: ‘Strong
prayer is needed, humble and strong prayer
that enables Jesus to carry out the miracle.
Prayer works wonders, but we have to
believe!’
God has so much for all of us to do, so many
privileges to unpack and live out. To be a
Christian is to have been supernaturalised. A
non supernatural Christian is a contradiction
in terms. Supernatural ministry, in whatever
God has called us into, is just part of being
ourselves in Christ. r

Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom
and revelation as you grow in your knowledge of
him, so with the eyes of your hearts enlightened
you may know what is the hope of his calling,
what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance
in the saints and what is the incomparable
greatness of his power towards us who believe . .
