Over 25 years, I started working as a staff and working my way to my position now as one of the three chiefs. Have you heard the term “kutu loncat”, people who switch jobs from one company to another (job- hopper) for various benefits, such as higher pays? >Of course, I have heard it before. It is possible for young candidates/employees to aim for a higher position, salary, or other benefits as much and as soon as possible. Have you found this job-hopper case in PT XYZ? >I rarely found this case. Usually, new employees in duration 3 to 5 years, they stay to train their skills and after 5 years, they usually perform and try to get higher payment and/or position, or even get another job in another company. If the company sees the employee is very potential, and good in their perform, the company tends to ‘keep’ them. If they are just an ordinary employee, the company might ‘release’ them. My division consists of 4 skilled people from different backgrounds, two reservoir engineers, one geologist, one geophysicist, to There was one of my staff when I was a senior manager, who was really smart and shows a lot of potentials to be a future team leader. After first joining the company, we sent him to join geophysical & geological courses and training, then he joined my team after his second year with the company. He proved his knowledge and technical skills as a geophysicist and surprisingly he also showed good leadership skills. Even though we are working mostly on our technical skills, we also think that it is important for our employees to be able to deliver good soft skills, such as leadership, communication, time management, and others. He was getting an offer to the same job position, with a higher paygrade in another company. He mentioned it to me to get a consultation. Since he was one of my best students, I had to try my best to keep him., so consult him to figure out what were the things he needed at that time. I propose another good offer that works for both sides. Why do you think they wanted to get another job in another company? >They usually feel that their current job doesn’t fit their preferences, they feel that they are not developed into a better person. Sometimes they also have ambitions to get a better position or title, as well as a better salary in another place. What actions would PT. XYZ do to prevent these case to happen in the future? >Since the first time the company will try the best way, from the strict hiring process to get potential and loyal new employees. When the company accepts new employees, they encourage them to set their own goals of the first year of their contract. The company will assess those individual’s performance in achieving the goals. Usually, their supervisor will watch them, assign them to join training sessions and give them marks to their performances, based on the company’s assessment guidelines. For employees with good marks and potentials, the company will keep them to stay by giving them promotions, or gade rising. For additional, since this company’s each division has specific skills to enter, in another company with same position may have a similar requirements and offers/grading in salary, even the people inside the industry also ‘itu-itu aja’. So, if the employee wanted to do a job-hopping to another, with similar position, it might only resulted in bad image for them.
