Think of what you really need to survive? Food, shelter, internet and also, clean water.

Water is a distinguishable part of our planet to be considered living. In fact, it contributes a

massive part of our planet and of our body. Whereas, it made up the 75 percent part of our planet and
up to 60 percent of the human adult. Its abundance makes us enjoy wide range of its uses in our
everyday lives ranging from personal use, household, agricultural, commercial and industrial uses. For
this, water can be equated as essential part for us to live. But this abundance is not always available
when its needed, nor is it always of suitable quality for all uses. Water must be considered as a finite
resource that has limits and boundaries to its availability and suitability for use.

Freshwater is a scare commodity on Earth. In fact, of the world’s 332.5 million cubic miles of
water, only 2 percent is fresh that are mostly locked up in ice and glaciers with 1.6 percent leaving us 0.4
percent of usable water that can be found in rivers, underground, in vapor and locked within cell
structures. On the other hand, growing population of living things threaten this small amount of number
that challenges the water resources engineering institutions.

In line with this problem, the knowledge and skill of water resources engineering must be
adapted. Water resources engineering is a branch of civil engineering concerned about the maximizing
the source of usable water ensuring the delivery of supply meets that should meet the demands of the
current and future communities. Supply and demand in water resources is a delicate and crucial one for
it is concerned about the lives of many people. The availability of usable water has and will continue to
dictate where and to what extent development will occur. Water must be in sufficient supply for an area
to develop.

As an essential need of the human, a statistical information revealed that 1 out of 6 people do
not have access to enough water, which causes approximately 5,000 children worldwide to die every
day from diarrhea-related diseases. And the only way to solve this problem is to gain access to a cleaner
water.

In agricultural sector, the supply of water is also crucial for crops grow with the help of water.
The demand for agricultural water is high but water efficiency is low that also needs attention for the
world that also depends on agricultural sector for living.

There is also existing application of engineering reflected on the construction of dams, pipelines,
canals, water treatment plants that also support the water supply of the community. These posed
solutions also have its own problem when it comes to maintenance that also threaten the supply and
challenges the engineering sector. The world’s water infrastructure is old and decaying that can cause a
trillion of gallons wasted water through leakage or water contamination.

The growing threats of population growth and climate change increases the scarcity as reflected
on the consecutive water interruptions for years. We are also considered threats as consumers and
proper water usage and management should become a habit.

To ensure freshwater security, engineers have developed various solutions. These solutions
include the desalination plants that uses reverse osmosis method using a membrane to separate the salt
and convert it to freshwater.
In agricultural sector, efficient agricultural technologies such as the drip irrigation method that
can substantially reduce the water demand while efficiently supplied.

For industrial sector, wastewater and sewage treatments are also implemented. The recycled
water can be used for nonpersonal uses such as irrigation and industrial purposes

At the end of our every day life, our future is our responsibility and this future lies on this planet
that supply your daily life needs including water. Water supply is also our responsibility.
