Energy in Chemical Reactions

A chemical reaction happens when molecules of reactants

collide, during collision, bonds between atoms break and new
bonds form, activation energy is the minimum energy that activates
an atom to a condition in which they can undergo a chemical
reaction, but a reaction can happen only when the collision energy
is equal or greater than the activation energy cause if not the
molecules will just bounce around each other without reacting. In a
chemical reaction energy is either given of or absorbed. When the
energy of the product is lower than the reactants, heat is produced
and its called exothermic, but if the energy of the product is lower
than the reactants heat is absorbed and that reaction is called
endothermic.

Energy is extracted from different sources, the energy around

us causes matter to do work, here are some examples of sources
energy, fossil fuels took millions of years to form underneath the
earth, its called convenience fuel, the chemical energy in these
fuels is transformed into heat and light by the process of burning,
Biogas is produced by the decomposition of organic materials
caused by bacteria. It’s a combustible gas consisting of
methane, next is geothermal energy which is extracted from the
heat of the earth in the form of steam which is used for electricity
next is hydrothermal energy moving water is used to run turbines
and generators to produce electricity, next is batteries, another is
Voltaic cells, they undergo electrochemical processes to produce
energy, a dry cell is a battery in which the electrolyte is a paste,
another type of battery is a lead storage battery that is usually used
in cars, and lastly, a fuel cell is a device that converts chemical
energy from fuel into electricity, they require a continuous supply of
fuel and oxygen to sustain it’s chemical reaction, next source of
energy is Solar cells, they’re photovoltaic cells are used for
powering homes, its solar energy used directly from the sun, and
lastly, Biomass, is a kind of fuel developed from organic materials,
specifically plants and animals, it’s a renewable source of energy
used to generate electricity.
INSIGHT
A chemical reaction is a result of reactants colliding, during
the chemical reaction energy is either released or absorbed, In a
collision, bonds between atoms break and new bonds are formed, but
a reaction can only happen when the activation energy, in other words
the minimum energy needed to activate an atom in order for the reaction
to happen, it can also only happen if the collision energy is equal or
greater than the activation energy, otherwise the reactants would collide
without creating a reaction, they’d seem to be a bunch of balls bouncing
off one another. When the energy of products is lower than the
reactants heat is released this reaction is called exothermic, but if it’s
the opposite and the energy of the product is lower than the reactants,
heat is absorbed and its called endothermic. Energy can be taken from
different sources, here are the following common sources, fossil fuels,
which are minerals taken from the earth, biogas which comes from
decomposition of organic materials, Geothermal which is heat from the
earth, hydrothermal energy from moving water, Batteries which are dry
cells, lead storage battery and fuel cells, solar cells, which is energy
taken directly from sun, and lastly biomass, energy from raw materials
like plants and animals.
