7. (a) A single core cable has a conductor of diameter 2.5cm and a sheath of inside diameter CO-4
6cm. Calculate the maximum stress. It is desired to reduce the maximum stress by
using two inter sheath. Determine their best position, the maximum stress and

9(a) Explain different methods to obtain 3 wire DC systems. (10 Marks June 11) CO-4
(b) A two conductor distributor has a length of 700m and is loaded as shown in fig. The CO-4
distance being represented in metres. The ends A and B are maintained at 250 V and
255V respectively. If the minimum potential allowable at consumer’s terminal is
245V calculate the diameter of the conductor used. Resistivity is 1.7 micro ohm cm.
(b) A 2 wire dc ring main is fed at A and load is tapped at points B, C and D. The CO-4
distributor length is 400m long and points B,C,D are 150m,250m,375m from point A.
The loads are 150A, 40A, 200A respectively. If the resistance per 100m of single
conductor is 0.04Ω and voltage of feeding point A is 240V.Calculate: i)current in each
section of the distributor ii) Voltages at point B,C and D (10 Marks Jun/July13)
11.(a) CO-4
12(a) A single core lead sheathed cable has a conductor diameter of 3cm, the diameter of CO-4
the cable being 9cm. The cable is graded by using two dielectrics of relative
permittivity 5 & 4 respectively with corresponding safe working stresses of 30kV/cm
and 20kV/cm. Calculate the radial thickness of each insulation and the safe working
voltage of the cable.

(b) A single core cable 1 km long has a core dia of 0.5cm and under sheath dia of 2cm. CO-4
The relative permittivity of insulating material is 3.5. the power factor on open circuit
is 0.5 and the supply voltage is 11kV, 50Hz. Determine
i) Capacitance of cable
ii) Charging current
iii) Dielectric loss/ph
iv) Equivalent insulation resistance. Given ρ = 4.5×1014Ωcm.
