Essential Questions
v What is human geography?
v What are real world applications of geography/spatial thinking?
v How do geographers describe where things are?
v What are the different type of regions?

By the end of this unit I will be able to…

ü Identify & analyze various kinds of maps, the information they portray, and their uses.
ü Identify different geospatial technologies geographers use to collect data.
ü Identify & analyze various spatial patterns using content vocabulary & the 4-level analysis strategy.
ü Explain advantages & disadvantages of: various scales on a map, & different map projections.
ü Define various types of regions, and provide specific examples within the U.S.

By the end of this unit you should have:

Thinking Geographically (8-10%) Course Content & Skills
Course Topics (Big Ideas) & Learning Objectives à • Essential Knowledge
Ø Introduction to Maps (Impacts & Interactions)
v IDENTIFY types of maps, the types of information presented in maps, & different kinds of spatial
patterns & relationships portrayed in maps
• types of maps include: reference & thematic
• types of spatial patterns include: absolute & relative distance, direction, clustering, dispersal, & elevation
• all map are selective & map projections inevitably distort spatial relationships
Ø Geographic Data (Impacts & Interactions)
v IDENTIFY different methods of geographic data collection
• geospatial technologies include GIS, satellite navigation, remote sensing, & online mapping & visualization
• spatial info can come from written accounts in the form of: field observations, media reports, travel narratives,
personal interviews, landscape analysis, photographic interpretation
Ø The Power of Geographic Data (Impacts & Interactions)
v EXPLAIN the geographical effects of decisions made using geographical information.
• geospatial & geographical data are used at all scales for personal, business, organizational, & governmental
decision-making purposes
Ø Spatial Concepts (Patterns & Spatial Organization)
v DEFINE major geographic concepts that illustrate spatial relationships.
• spatial concepts include: absolute & relative location, space, place, flows, distance decay, time-space
compression, & pattern
Ø Human-Environmental Interaction (Patterns & Spatial Organization)
v EXPLAIN how major geographic concepts illustrate spatial relationships.
• concepts of nature & society include sustainability, natural resources, & land use
• theories of societies interacting with the environment evolved from environmental determinism to possibilism
Ø Scale of Analysis (Patterns & Spatial Organization)
v DEFINE scales of analysis used by geographers.
v EXPLAIN what scales of analysis reveal.
• scales of analysis include: global, regional, national, & local
• patterns & processes at different scales reveal variations in & different interpretations of data
Ø Regional Analysis (Spatial Processes & Societal Change)
v DESCRIBE different ways that geographers define regions.
• regions are defined on the basis of one or more unifying characteristics or patterns of activity
• types of regions are: formal, functional, perceptual/vernacular
• regional boundaries are transitional & often contested and overlapping
• geographers apply regional analysis at local, national, & global scales
