CHEMICAL PLANT AND PETROLEUM REFINERY PIPING

SCOPE.
Requirements for the design of piping for all fluids, including: chemicals, petroleum
products, gas steam, air, water, fluidized solids and refrigerants. All piping within
the property limits of facilities engaged in the processing or handling of chemical,
petroleum or related products. Examples are chemical plant, petroleum refinery,
loading terminal, and natural gas processing plant.

EXCLUSIONS.
Piping systems designed for internal gage pressures from 0 to 15 psi provided the
fluid handled is nonflammable, nontoxic, and not damaging to human tissue and its
design temperature is from –20 trough 366 °F. Power boilers and boiler external
piping (B31.1). Tubes, tube headers, crossovers, and manifolds of fired heaters,
which are internal to the heater enclosure. Pressure vessels, heat exchangers,
pumps, compressors, and other fluid handling or processing equipment, including
internal piping and connections for external piping. Piping located on company
property witch has been set aside for pipelines conforming to B31.4, B31.8 or
B31.11. Plumbing, sanitary sewers and storm sewers; and fire protection systems
constructed in compliance with insurance underwriters’.

GAS TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION PIPING SYSTEMS

SCOPE.
Design and safety aspects of operation and maintenance of gas transmission and
distribution systems, including gas pipelines, gas compressor stations, gas
metering and regulation stations, gas mains and service lines up to the outlet of
the customer’s meter set assembly. Included are gas transmission and gathering
pipelines, including appurtenances, that are installed offshore for the purpose of
transporting gas from production facilities to onshore locations; gas storage
equipment of the closed pipe type.

EXCLUSIONS.
Pressure vessels, piping with metal temperatures between –20 trough 450°F,
piping beyond the outlet of the customer’s meter set assembly. Piping in oil
refineries or natural gasoline extraction plants, gas treating plant piping other the
main gas stream piping in dehydration and all other processing plants installed as
part of a gas transmission system, gas manufacturing plants, industrial plants or
mines. Wellhead assemblies, including control valves, flow lines between well
head and trap or separator, offshore platform production facility piping, or casing
and tubing in gas or oil wells. Liquid petroleum, transportation piping systems
(B31.4), and liquefied natural gas piping systems (B31.3).

LIQUID TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FOR HYDROCARBONS, LIQUID
PETROLEUM GAS, ANHYDROUS AMMONIA AND ALCOHOLS.
PIPELINE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FOR LIQUID HYDROCARBONS AND
OTHER LIQUIDS.

SCOPE.
Design of piping transporting liquids such as crude oil, condensate, natural
gasoline, natural gas liquids, liquefied petroleum gas, carbon dioxide, liquid
alcohol, liquid anhydrous ammonia and liquid petroleum products between
producers’ lease facilities, tank forms, natural gas processing plants, refineries,
stations, ammonia plants, terminals (marine, rail and truck). Piping consists of
pipe, flanges, bolting, gaskets, valves relief devices, fittings, and the pressure
containing parts of other piping components. Primary and associated auxiliary
liquid petroleum and liquid anhydrous ammonia piping at pipeline terminals, tank
farms, pump stations, pressure reducing stations, including scraper traps, strainers
and prover loops. Storage and working tanks, liquid petroleum and liquid
anhydrous ammonia piping located on property which has been set aside for such
piping within petroleum refinery, natural gasoline, gas processing, ammonia and
bulk plants.

EXCLUSIONS.
Auxiliary piping such as water, air, steam, lubricating oil, gas and oil, pressure
vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, meters and other such equipment including
internal piping and connections for piping; piping designed for internal pressures
below 15 psi regardless of temperature, above 15 psi if design temperature is
lower than –20°F or higher than 250°F, casing, tubing, or pipe used in oil wells,
wellhead assemblies, oil and gas separators, crude oil production tanks, petroleum
refinery, natural gasoline, gas processing, ammonia, carbon dioxide processing
and bulk plant piping. Gas transmission and distribution piping.
