6. Project Description

A. Rationale
Known to be the 3rd class city and the capital of the province of
oriental Mindoro, Calapan City with an almost 142, 214 cannot be denied
to accumulate a pile of solid waste contributing to the toxicity of a
particular land area. Just in Barangay Batino, Calapan City where the
landfill of Calapan City is located, the soil in the area may be saturated
with chemicals or hazardous substances. Later on it will become suburban
home site, unbeknownst to people who may live on it.
Very few people in the city and even in the stated area have been
aware of the bad effect of the substances being released from solid wastes.
What’s consuming their mindset and habit is the continuous contribution
to the accumulating pile of garbage each and every day of their living.
One factor which is missed by many is the awareness of the state of
today’s biodiversity. People lack awareness on the possible outcome of
their daily activities. But this time, this shouldn’t be a hindrance anymore
to take action on the progressive destruction of biodiversity.

Planting of bio remediating plants is a cheap, sustainable, effective

and environmentally friendly alternative that helps remove or degrade
contamination from soils. These plants can be harvested and treated,
removing the pollutants, producing a well-sanitized area.
As a result, an area catering this kind of plants will sustain a living for
others contributing to a healthy biodiversity.
Due to this observation, students from DWCC/ Sci-Tech (Group 4),
decided to conduct this project to give attention and contribution to the
land area of Batino, Calapan City.
Thus, recognition of this project will reflect that Divine Word College
of Calapan is a support in connecting students to the awareness of a
sustainable biodiversity. Taking some initiative and consistent small actions
contribute to a great range of impact.

B. Objectives
Specifically, this project aims:
1. To provide an opportunity for the community to sustain their
living through establishing a nursery and poultry.

2. To promote a sustainable use of managing our ecosystem not

just lessen the problem in our biodiversity but to start a simple way in
protecting our Mother earth.

3. To restore and protect our biodiversity in order to prevent land

degradation, ecosystem imbalance and food insecurity.

4. To promote awareness about the state of today’s biodiversity to

the less fortunate in order for them to withstand their everyday living.

C. Expected Output
The following are the key outputs of the project lunching:
1. Provide a sustainable living for the residence of Barangay
Batino, Calapan City.

2. Better conservation practices and continuous improvement

towards agriculturally sustainable farming methods.

3. Involvement of local community in ecological value and

biological diversity such as nursery.

4. Establish different activities towards sustainability with a better

management in the selected area

5. Engagement of children in different activities concerning

awareness of sustainable living and conservation.

D. Components and Activities

The DWCC Sci-Tech (Group 4) is proposing variety of activities
aiming to restore and protect the biodiversity in a three-month
period of operation which provide long-term benefits majorly
through nursery for vegetables and other plants and through
providing animals for domestication.
A seminar in the chosen community shall be conducted by the
proponents to provide information and awareness about the
biodiversity and the soon to be implemented activities.
Simultaneously, a free mini lessons for kids shall also be conducted
to provide initial/basic knowledge about biodiversity and how to
protect it.
It is expected that planting activities will be the initial
movement of the group then proceeding to the creation of nursery
for vegetables and other plants. Likewise, provision of animals
shall also be made for domestication. Proper maintenance shall be
observed to ensure its long run capabilities.
The additional activity includes clean-up drive which will also be
conducted as part of the three-month period activity.

G. Project Benefits/Impact
• Community awareness
• Social cooperation
• Reducing carbon dioxide levels
• Increasing humidity
• Reducing levels of certain pollutants
• Keeping air temperatures down
• Improve conservation of biodiversity
A major advantage of this project is to help improve biodiversity. The
most appropriate and sustainable solution is to support and encourage
barangays to establish their own garden with emphasis on diversity in tree
species to make the difference in reversing environmental degradation in
Calapan City.
Planting is also a practical way of introducing and integrating
Environmental Education in Calapan. Other barangay in different parts of
the district can also be mobilized and trained fairly quickly, with minimal
logistical/administrative cost implications as we conduct some seminars
before doing the actual planting.
