FACULTY OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN II

(BFC32803)
SEMESTER I 2019/2020

PROJECT

This project must be carried out by group of maximum four (4) members only. This project contributes
20% to the coursework mark.

TOPIC: DESIGN OF MULTI-STORY BUILDING

A multi-story building will be constructed in Lot PT32803, Johor Bahru, Johor using in-situ reinforced
concrete structures. An area of 50 m x 30 m has been allocated for the development purpose. As an
appointed designer and structural engineer team, you are ordered to prepare the details of project and
design of the building including a complete report of the following scopes:

a) Illustration of the building in three-dimensional.

b) Description of the proposed building and details of project.

c) Key-plan of floors (ground, typical and flat roof) and layout of column loads.

d) All design parameters (specifications, strength of materials, exposure classes, nominal cover, etc.)

e) Analysis of design actions subjected to all probable load combinations

f) Frame analysis and diagrams of moment and shear force

g) Design of columns, foundations and detailings.

h) Verification of frame analysis and design.

i) Discussion and recommendation.

Duration of design is from October 2019 to December 2019.

Identifier project is FKAAS-2019-TX-19.

Client is Setia Maju Sdn Bhd, Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor.

1.0 Detail of Project:

a) Site: The proposed building will be constructed in Lot PT32803, Johor Bahru, Johor . The location can
be considered as urban area with flat topography, slope > 0.05 and dense terrain.

b) Shape of building: Students are freely to design any shape. The purpose of each area must be defined
based on the specific preferences.

c) Design consideration:

i. The building has lift/staircase which located at the middle/edge area.

ii. All variables and permanent actions must follow the recommendation of BS 6993/ BS EN. Wind
action must be calculated according to MS 1554.

iii. Wind action must be considered in all dominant directions.

iv. Number of floor is five with maximum height of floor is 4.0m. Foundation to ground floor (stump)
has height of 1.5m.

v. The building must be designed in two separate purposes. The first two floors serve as parking
area while the latter three floors as commercial area (office, hotel, shopping mall, etc).

vi. The foundation must be designed according the soil condition in Johor Bahru, Johor

vii. Any relevant assumptions can be employed where ever necessary.

2.0 Report:

a) Report should include all information/parameters, analysis, design and drawing of structure, key-plan
and detailing.

b) Computer drawing using a CAD system is compulsory. Illustration of the building can be produced
using Google SketchUp.

c) Frame analysis can be performed using StaadPro. However, a verification of frame analysis under
wind action must be conducted manually.

d) Analysis and design of structures should be conducted as scheduled, which specified in Part 4.0.

e) A compile report must be submitted upon completing the course. Report must be submitted in
Microsoft Word format (softcopy and binding versions).

f) All drawings of key-plan and detailing must be produced and printed in A3/A4 paper.

g) Prepare an organize report with table of content and separator. Each member must also sign the
Declaration of Student Code of Ethic.

3.0 Assessment:

The assessment of this project will be based on three concepts of cognitive, psychomotor and affective.
Brief criteria of the assessment are:

- Structural system and idealization, concepts and assumptions

- Plan and layout

- Analysis and design

- Detailing

- Report and organization of report

- Professionalism, ethics and creativity

Please refer the evaluation rubric for details of assessment.

4.0 Important Date:

Deadline of preliminary and final reports submission are as follow:

- Week 06 : Plan and layout of building

3/6
- Week 08 : Analysis of frame structure

- Week 10 : Column design

- Week 12 : Foundation design

- Week 14 : Final report (Submission by Thursday, before 3.00pm)

If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A deduction of 15% of
the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the group shall be imposed upon expiry of
the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the maximum mark available from the actual achieved by the
group shall then be imposed of the next subsequence days.

5.0 Warning:

Plagiarism and academic dishonesty can have some severe penalties and repercussions. Student who
involve in this misconduct will receive a zero mark.
