DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING (CEE)
Date: 17 June, 2019 (Monday)
Course No: GS 4253
Course Title: Ecology and Environment

Assignment-1

1. What do you understand by engineering ecology? Why is it necessary to have the

knowledge of ecology for the civil engineers? Give two practical examples.
2. Department of Environment (DoE) of People’s Republic of Bangladesh is going to take a
development project naming Clean Air & Sustainable Environment (CASE), where the goal
is to strengthen capacity to plan, monitor, regulate and implement Sustainable
Environmental Initiatives (SEI) in transport and brick making sectors.
i) What do you understand by sustainability?
ii) As an engineer of that project, point out some specific problems and challenges
where the authority should focus on in perspective of Gazipur City.
3. What are the levels of studying ecology? Using neat sketches, explain those levels.
4. Differentiate among aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration and fermentation with
examples and their corresponding reactions.
5. What are the two vital compounds for the existence of human beings in this earth? Write
down one synthesis process relevant to the production of each of those compounds. Also
mention the requirements for those processes.
6. Define and briefly explain the followings in terms of ecology with proper examples:
i) Population
ii) Genetic Diversity
iii) Habitat

7. What do you understand by the term “self-nourishers” in ecology? Explain with proper
examples.
8. Suppose, some ecology explorers have paid a visit to your locality for exploring different
organisms where they have identified greenish-blue like organisms in the pond as shown
in Figure 1 (enlarged view) and Figure 2 (microscopic view). Write down the possible name
of these organisms. How these organisms gains energy and carbon from its sources and
how they utilize these for their subsistence?

7. What do you understand by the term “nourished by others” in ecology? Explain with proper
examples.
8. Suppose, some ecology explorers have paid a visit to your locality for exploring different
organisms where they have identified presence of bacteria like organisms forming nodules
in a soybean root as shown in Figure 3 (enlarged view) and Figure 4 (microscopic view).
Another interesting feature of these organisms is that, no presence of sunlight is required
for its energy consumptions. Write down the possible name of these organisms. How these
organisms gains energy and carbon from its sources and how they utilize these for their
subsistence?
