server, troubleshoot DNS server, maintain AD DS server, organise
User and Service Accounts and monitor Windows Server 2012

OUTCOME :
Able to explain ISO/IEC: 8648 :1988 standard, maintaining server
security using standard SOP, create server maintenance documents
and explain different types of server technical specification.

Step 1 1. Create server maintenance report according to the Server Maintenance List
given for the server maintenance your have done previously.
2. Document your server maintenance report.
3. Make sure list all your references at the end of your documentation. The
references must use APA formatting

Task 2: Analyse Server Maintenance Previous Report


Step 2
1. Analyse server maintenance previous report (Tast 1).
2. Produce an analyzing report for the server maintenance previous report.
Your analysis report is to enabling continual service improvement in critical
systems. Present your analysis in three(3) output:
a. Findings
b. Critical Concerns
c. Improvement Opportunities (you may include budget, manpower and etc)
3. Document your analysis report.

Server Maintenance List


Physical Hardware Checks

 Check hardware termination


 Identify any hardware faults on servers, printers, etc.
 Check functionality of other peripherals
 Investigate any disconnected cables
 Check for any incorrectly connected cabling
 Check for error indicators or lights

Backup & Restore

 Check backup logs for errors


 Verify backup job consistency
 Perform test restore using recent backup Media
 Ensure backup is running as per schedule
 Run a cleaning tape when required

Software Updates & Licensing

 Check for OS updates


 Check for software updates
 Check any third party applications for updates
 Ensure antivirus definition update scheduling
 Check for updated printer drivers
 Ensure product licensing is current & valid

Event Logs & Services

 Check system, applications, DNS, FRS & security logs


 Archive old events to files with appropriate dates
 Troubleshoot any found error events & warnings
 Check for services failing start up
 Check the correct services ara starting up and disable any unnecessry services

Disk Management

 Check disks for data integrity & consistency


 Analyse disk performance and usage
 Check status of RAID configuration if applicable
 Perform & schedule a chkdsk & defragment disks if required
 Check disk capacity
 Clear temp files
 Check network shares and disable any unnecessary shares

Security & Anti-Virus

 Enable and check forewall & router logs.


 Perform penetration tests on network/servers
 Check event, history & virus logs
 Perform security checks on other applications & files if required
 Check scan schedule times
 Check wireless authentification, encryption, access control & logs

 Ensure anti-virus definition updates are occuring

Active Directory

 Check active directory replication


 Check active directory using replmon, dcdiag & or netiq tools
 Check & monitor active directory performance
 Auditand disable and/or remove unnecessary user accounts

Microsoft Exchange Mail System

 Check Exchange event logs


 Clead dead and/or old bad mail
 Check individual mailbox space usage and note down any large mailboxes
 Ensure replication & routing events are successful
 Schedule a database compact using isinteg or eseutil tools

Network Performance

 Check Network Utilization rates


 Monitor any excessive broadcast traffic
 Identify any Network bottlenecks

Miscellaneous

 Check server performance


 Check DHCP, DNS & WINS configurations
 Check WSUS synchronisation logs
 Confirm Group Policies settings
 Check the up-time of servers, switches and routers
 Test UPS battery performance
 Make a hardware profile in case you need to roll back to last known config.
 Test contingency remote access mechanisms
