Unit 2 – Algebra Criteria A

Level 1 : Prior knowledge required https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXE8W-AD8pw

Level 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pB7qrQ64xM

Watch the link, given above and attempt the following questions:

Complete the following questions on a tear-out.

A) Factorising by common factoring

PSG/2019-20/Mathematics- MYP Y2 / SS/SL/ Algebra/Homework Criteria – A, B, C, D 1

B) Factorising by grouping in pairs

C) Factorising using the difference of two squares

If the expression we want to factorize is the difference

of two squares, we can simply reverse the procedure.

Criterion C : Communicating Criterion D: Real Life Application

Goal: To do analysis of the performance of the two tennis players.

Role: You are a manager of the sports star Martina.
Audience: People present in the stadium
Situation: Lawn Tennis tournament in which various players are playing on the terms set by
them initially.
Product: The money earned or lost by the two mentioned sports persons.
Success Criteria: Criteria C, D

Situation 1: Sanchez paid $600 to enter a tennis tournament. She would receive $250 prize money
for
each set she would win. She worked out her total profit (p) could be written in terms of the number
of matches won (m) as: p = 250m – 600

a. Use the given rule to complete the table, using correct mathematics.

m 1 2 3 4 5 6

b. Comment on the profit /loss if Sanchez does not win any match.
c. Using the table above, identify the minimum number of matches she must win in order to make
a profit.

Situation 2: On the other hand, Martina was invited to play in a tournament. She charged a fee of
$2000 to feature in the tournament. On the condition that she must pay $400 for every match lost.

a. Find the general rule for the profit (p) left with her after (m) matches lost.

b. Use the general rule formulated in part a, to complete the table:

Matches11
lost 2 3 4 5 6
(m)

Mo money
left/profit
(p)

PSG/2019-20/Mathematics- MYP Y2 / SS/SL/ Algebra/Homework Criteria – A, B, C, D 3

c. Is there a possibility that Martina will lose her money in the tournament and go into a loss?
Justify your answer using correct mathematical strategies and calculations.
d. Plot the linear equation for the 2 players on the graph provided. Choose appropriate scale.

e. Is there a possibility that the 2 sports persons- Martina and Sanchez have same amount of
money left at any point of time? If, yes then find out after how many matches.
f. If Sanchez wins 10 matches in the tournament and decides to donate 100% of the money
earned
to a Charitable Blind School, then calculate the money donated by her. (Show working
neatly)

Criteria B

Task 1: These are the first three steps of the pattern.

1. Apply the observation from the above pattern, draw the figure for step 4.

2. How many matchsticks are there in step 4? _____________________

3. Draw step 6. Also calculate, how many matchsticks are there in step 6.

PSG/2019-20/Mathematics- MYP Y2 / SS/SL/ Algebra/Homework Criteria – A, B, C, D 4

4. Make T-Chart to record “step number” and
“matchsticks(units)”.

5. Write an equation to relate step number s and units u.

6. Also verify your general rule with step number 8
7. Describe the pattern being followed.

TASK 2 : Culmination of S.A - Criteria B, C

Pay it forward- Promoting International mindedness- Students

to choose local to global issues. Using Pay It Forward – method
propose a solution. Children to come up with their idea of
paying it forward, how will it affect /change the world?

Posters can be created. Students can take forward their action

plan.

Culmination – Task : Reflect on the question posed to Trevor, who was in grade 7 like you.

If you were asked to think of an idea, which you think could change the world for the better.

• What would it be, and how would you implement it?

• Write the formula for the number of people reached by you using the plan created.

Students please feel free to collaborate with your peers and come up with your idea of bringing
about a change. Students to try to implement service in action.

PSG/2019-20/Mathematics- MYP Y2 / SS/SL/ Algebra/Homework Criteria – A, B, C, D 5

• Students must take charge and promote an idea / spread goodwill / positivity / spread
awareness/ get people sign a campaign and post it on the padlet link sent through mail by
the subject teacher of their work in form of report with data, or pictures of themselves at the
task too.
• Be creative, thoughtful and think of the change you can bring and have started to bring.

Hope you will enjoy and feel good to see the effect of your idea.
