Job Title: Trainee Biomedical Scientist

Band: Annex U Band 5

Location: Eastern Pathology Alliance

Managerially Accountable to: Chief/Senior Biomedical Scientist

Professionally Accountable to: Consultant Head of Department & Service


Manager

Job Purpose:

To undertake training and completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence


registration portfolio within Blood Sciences is required to learn and perform under
supervision a range of complex analyses in Automated Haematology, Chemistry,
Coagulation, Microscopy, Immunology, Autoimmunity & Allergy, Transfusion Science
and Reception Services. To Maintain the Laboratory Information Service on a daily
basis allowing the service users access to accurate and updated patient care test
results. To attain HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist and participate as a
practising professional.

To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service,

Overview of Essential Responsibilities:

Clinical Scientific and Management Responsibilities:

1. Communicates complex service related test information to managers,


consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers

2. Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers
about test results and provide information that is complex concerning
methodologies and service requirements, seeking advice as required

3. Assists in explaining results and reassures the users that the information is
correct after seeking advice when results do not agree with clinical presentation
4. Manages own work on a daily basis in specialised services. Responsible for
processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in
line with Trust and Service polices

5. Maintains as part of a team, complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily


basis and assess fitness for clinical use referring to senior staff as appropriate

6. Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers

7. Able to run daily test procedures on all methodologies to include calibration and
quality control testing and refer to senior staff to sign off as fit for clinical use

8. Fault find equipment and analyser function after formal in-house training

9. Follows policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve
and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust

10. Assist service engineers to repair and maintain laboratory equipment

11. Assist in the development and maintenance of standards as necessary for


continuing CPA accreditation

Training:

12. Participate in Biomedical Scientist training programme

13. Participation in in-house training, CPD, mandatory triennial update course and
completing Trust mandatory training as appropriate

Health and Safety:

14. Follow Health & Safety Code of Practice for the service and ensure spillages of
biohazard/chemical substances are dealt with appropriately

Quality:

15. Participation in internal and external quality assessment

16. Keep up to date with SOPs, departmental and Trust policies

Responsibilities for Laboratory Information Service:

17. Assists in managing and maintaining specialised databases in laboratory


computer systems and patient storage databases

18. Responsible for inputting and amending patient data and results, which
includes other colleagues work

19. Trained to use, retrieve and store patient information on several patient
database systems for access by external and internal users

20. Trained to operate and manage software databases on complex clinical


analysers

Research, Evaluation and Service Development:

21. Use research & development protocols on daily basis to provide statistical
presentations of internal quality control (QC) to assess equipment performance
in line with QC rules (e.g. Westgard)

22. Assist in the evaluation and development of methods to improve the service
and patient care diagnostic tests

23. Investigate abnormal and unusual results by recognised research &


development protocols and or audit to explain the anomalies, seeking advice as
appropriate

24. Assisting in the development of specialised services to include new and


emerging technologies and development of Standard Operating Procedures
(SOPs)

Job Title: Healthcare Scientist (Biomedical Scientist (BMS))

Professionally Accountable to: EPA Network Blood Sciences Manager & Clinical
Head of Service

Job Purpose:

A state registered Health Care Scientist who will specialise in Haematology and
Transfusion Science is required to perform a range of analyses in Automation,
Coagulation, Microscopy, Immunology, Autoimmunity and Allergy, Transfusion
Science and Reception Services.

The post holder will maintain the Laboratory Information Service on a daily basis,
allowing the service users access to accurate and updated patient care test results.
The state registered Health Care Scientist is required to train and demonstrate
methodologies on complex analytical equipment to medical staff, Clinical Scientists,
other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students and medical laboratory assistants (MLA).

20. Assist in the education and training of Medical staff, Clinical Scientists, other
BMS, Trainee BMS, MLA’s and visiting students as required within their
specialised area.

21. Demonstrate ongoing competence to practice by attending courses, lectures,


mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and other training
activities.

22. Train in all specialised services according to the staff rotation programme.

23. To keep up to date with SOPs.

24. To actively participate in an Annual Personal Development review (PDR).

Health & Safety

25. Provide safety supervision & training for junior members of staff and actively
promote safe working practices in all areas of the laboratory service.

26. To abide by the Health and Safety Code of Practice for the Service.

27. To ensure the application of Trust policies where applicable to the Pathology
Services.

28. To participate in an annual Health and Safety review.

29. Any other duties as required by the Service Manager or the Chief BMS
