Fire Water Demand Calculation Report Page 6 of 23

1 INTRODUCTION
This document is to provide the basic design information required to engineer the Duport
Midstream Company Limited 2,500 BPD Crude Distillation Unit and 1,400 BPD Naphtha
Stabilizer Unit to process crude into the following products at their facility near Benin
City in Edo State, Nigeria:

 Full-Range Stabilized Naphtha (FRN)

 Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) (Jet A-1 if possible)
 Automotive Gas Oil (AGO)
 Atmospheric Tower Bottoms (ATB)

The simulation model comprises the Full Well Stream (FWS) from Otien-1 into HP
separator, separating into Gas phase and total liquid phase (oil + water). The oil and
water produced are channeled to the feed stock tank.

The LP gas received are boosted in the booster compressor as to meet the downstream
HP gas pressure. The total is comingling before sending to Gas Processing Facility
(GPF).

The gas produced shall be further treated at the Gas Processing Facility (GPF). Dry gas
from GPF is distributed into export pipeline, CNG plant, and Fuel Gas System, at
24MMscfd, 15MMscfd and 5MMscfd respectively.

This report provides the outcome of HYSYS simulation heat and material balance for
the scope limit and export gas hydraulic analysis.

Objective
The fire water demand calculation is aimed at achieving the following:

1. To determine the system zoning of the entire Duport refinery

2. To establish the demand for each zone and identify the largest/highest

demand

3. To determine the firewater storage tank and pumps capacity

4. To ensure the overall safety of the Duport refinery is cover for fire water

suppression system

2 BASIS OF DESIGN

General
This analysis will be based on the Codes and Standards as required by relevant NFPA
13, 14, 15, 16, 20; IP 19D; API publ. 2021, 2030; BS EN 1284 Guidance., and Exxon
Mobil GP 70-01-07

Maximum Risk Evaluation

 It is assumed that only one Fire Zone will be considered at a time.

 Multiple fire scenarios have been excluded.

Based on these considerations the fire water and foam water demand shall be calculated
for the single Fire Zone worst case.

Fire Zone Definition

A fire zone consists of equipment containing hydrocarbons concentrated in an area and

separated from others by space.

Application rate

The following specific discharge densities shall be adopted (IP Part 19D.3 Table D.1):

 Production process: 6.5Lit/min/m2 (on the plan view)

 Vessel protection: 6.1 Lit/min/m2 (on the vessel surface)

 Product Tanks: 10.2 lit/min/m2 for reference tank and 6.1 lit/min/m2 for

adjacent tank(s).

Building/Offices

Discharge is based on sprinkler spread. The maximum area protected by a single

sprinkler does not exceed 13.4m2. (NFPA 13, 2016 8.8.2.2.1)

Maximum Water Velocity

Hydraulic calculations shall be used to design the distribution system. The water
maximum velocity of 6 m/s (NFPA 20, 2016, A.4.16.6) shall be considered in the line
size calculation on the distribution area.

Fire Water Demand Calculation Report Page 9 of 23

Monitor and Hose Reel

The following systems and equipment operating on supply of firewater or foam water:

 Fixed water spray systems dedicated to protecting equipment containing volatile

hydrocarbons
 One/Two water monitors (114 m3/hr each) for general area protection. (GP 70 01
07)
 One/ Two water/foam hose reels (23 m3/hr each) as support. (GP 70 01 07 NFPA
13-1999, 7-2.3.1.3)

Fire Water Line Sizing

Hazen-Williams Equation shall be used to determine pressure drop which states thus:
(NFPA 15-1996,5-5.1.1)

. .
DP . . ;DP< 0.5psi/100ft

.
V ;3ft/s<V< 15ft/s

Where Q = Product flow rate (bpd)

d = Internal diameter of the pipe (inch)

3 FIRE WATER/FOAM SPRAY APPLICATION

3.1 Fire Intensity Control

System design densities, volumes and monitor/hydrant orientation shall be selected

based on “projected equipment area” or “actual surface area”. Regardless of the methods
used, the design for nozzle placement shall ensure that all portions of the protected
equipment’s are effectively covered by the spray pattern of selected monitor/hydrant.

3.2 Fire Water Surface Area Calculation

Calculations determining equipment’s area shall be classified as “projected or plan area”

LxB……………………………………………………………………………Equation 1

See Appendix A for fire water calculations table.

3.3 Minimum Fire Water Feeding Pressure

The fire water system requires a minimum of 7 barg feeding pressure at all points.
However, the fire water pumps shall discharge at 10 barg as to meet the most remote
nozzle or monitor within the network. (NFPA 13, A-10.2.2.1; NFPA 14, 5-7)

3.4 Hose Reel System

Hose reel system will be designing to provide firewater in the administrative building of
the Duport refinery. The spray water system will be supplied from the firewater system.

3.5 Fire Hydrant System

Fire hydrant system will be provided on firewater network (or ring main) round the facility
with branches line to all system to be protected. Foam-water monitor / water monitor shall
be appropriately spaced around the tanks, separators and other risk areas within Duport
refinery. Monitors are essentially designed and installed for providing pressurized fire
water for surface cooling and firefighting. This shall form the main approach to fight fire
on Duport refinery.

3.6 Foam System

Liquid hydrocarbon fire shall be extinguished with a mixture of pressurized water and
Aqueous film forming foam chemical (AFFF). Foam vessel shall be of bladder type. This
DUPORT Energy Park Project

shall comprise of foam proportional (pre-mixer), 3% foam concentrate contained in a

bladder and the pressurized vessel. Figure 1 below shows a typical foam tank.

5.3 Nozzle Calculation and Selection

A nozzle’s effectiveness is based on the size, shape, velocity, and distribution of its
droplets. From the BETE Catalog, a Fire Protection specific nozzle used for: Deluge
Protect offshore platforms, storage tanks, hazardous loading areas, and equipment bays.
The BETE Nozzle N-Type has the following characteristics;

Features

 Simplicity of design

 One-piece/no internal parts

 Clog-resistant

 Three standard pipe sizes—1/2”, 1”, and 1-1/2”

 Male connection

 Factory Mutual, U.S. Coast Guard, and Lloyd's Register approved models

Spray Characteristics
• Two spray cones: an outer, wide angle cone and a narrower inner cone combine to give
full cone effect

Spray pattern: Full Cone

Spray angles: 90° and 120° standard

Flow rates: 3.0 to 534 gpm
