Assessment:

In this article the primary focus of the author is on the state of primary care medicine and

more specifically family practice care. The author discusses three main points: the value of

family medicine and primary care, efforts to strengthen primary care, family physician income,

workload, and other key metrics. The article includes many statistical charts that help to

contribute to the overall message of the article. Family practice is a fundamental part of health

care but is lacking beneficial legislature and benefits. The article addresses ways family practice

care is trying to be adapted for the better.

This information presented in the article is relevant to me and my Independent and Study

Mentorship because I am studying under a family practice physician assistant. The article gave

me more knowledge on the topic of family medicine which will be beneficial in mentor visits.

Although, the article was dated I will still be able to apply this information to my learning in my

Independent and Study Mentorship class and to my mentor visits.

The information in this article is all factual and reliable due to its credible source.

Although the information was a little dated due to its date of being written, I was still able to

learn. From the article, I learned just how much the speciality of family practice entails and how
important it is to the society. The article did not change any of my previous information just add

additional beneficial information. The article provided me with secondary research which I can

support with my primary research from mentor visits. Based on today, I can apply that since the

article’s creation date the family medicine specialty has adapted and grown.

The knowledge I have gained from this article makes me question as to why the primary

care speciality is becoming less and less appealing to various medical students. Also, I wonder

what changes have been implemented since the article to help strengthen the specialty of family

medicine. The information peaked my interest to continue researching into the speciality of

medicine. Further, I want to begin to research common problems in the specialty of family

medicine for ideas for my final work. I will use this information, previous knowledge, and future

research to begin creating potential ideas for my final work.

This new information was effective in helping me reach my goals in Independent and

Study Mentorship because it gave me a broader scope of knowledge on family practice. This is

fundamental to my success in class because I will be shadowing a family practice physician

assistant. Having a vast knowledge of the specialty of family medicine before I begin my mentor

visits will help to make learning and observing much easier. The information was all factual and

displayed in an easy manner to comprehend. The author supported all of his context with

supporting factual, statistical graphs which helped enhanced the credibility of the overall article.
