As defined by Oxford English dictionary, Statistics is concerned with exploring,

summarizing, and making inferences about the state of complex systems. It is derived from the
Latin word “status” or the Italian word “statista,” and meaning of these words is “political state”
or “government.” The development of statistics in Europe was strongly motivated by the need to
make sense of the large amount of data collected by population surveys in the emerging nation
states. At the same time, the mathematical foundations for statistics advanced significantly due
to breakthroughs in probability theory inspired by games of chance (gambling). The history of
statistics in the modern sense dates from the mid-17th century, with the term statistics itself
coined in 1749 in German, although there have been changes to the interpretation of the word
over time.

Statistics may be one of a difficult subject to many but it has been one of the most
important branches of mathematics. It plays an important role in our daily lives. We use
statistics to compare data, research, analysis, thesis or studies. Statistics helps in determining
the existing position of per capita income, unemployment, population growth rates, housing,
schooling medical facilities, etc., in a country. The government even uses statistics to know
what the public needs and wants such as information about land, agriculture, commerce,
populations of their states to assess their military potential, their wealth, taxation and other
aspects of government. Statistics would give us a clearer view of the possibilities or results in
our data collection and it would help us to provide a solution in such problem. The increasing
demand for more and better statistics has brought to the front position the importance of
statistics as a strategic resource for national and international development. They constitute an
essential element in improving the ability of the government to develop appropriate policies,
manage the economy and social development reform policies, monitor improvements in the
living standards of the people and report back this progress to the public using solid evidences.

Today, there has been a lot of advancements in all sectors like economics, political,
social and such which affects largely our lifestyle development. Our life has been so much
dependent on these developments or changes, whether it may be for the better or worse and
that through the study of statistics that we may able to have a clearer vision on what we need
and focus on the things that matters the most.
