INTRODUCTION

Every kind of communication that happens nowadays is possible due to advancement

in networking whether Internet or intranet. A single entity or any multinational

organization always tests their proposed network’s credibility before they can

physically set it up. It allows them to check, correct & optimize their topology for

every possible case. It saves them both the cost & time.

Simulation is an important tool in design, analysis and testing of computer networks.

It allows us to analyze and understand a real network by modeling it using different

devices and links.

Our group was asked by respected Lab engineer to simulate a moderate level of

network topology by using software tools we used during lab. We had an option for

taking any local entity as an example for our model. We decided to simulate the

network model of our university.

The simulation was done on Packet Tracer. We simulated network model for five

different departments of our university. We included only three rooms Seminar Room,

Computer Lab & Library for each modeled department.

This report summarizes the results of network simulation in Packet Tracer. The

objective was to model a bigger network consisting of minimum 500 end devices & 10

small networks (routers).

This report includes screenshots of different stages of modeled network, cost analysis

for the whole network and conclusions from this project.

COST ANALYSIS

We used 10 routers, 30 switches, almost 300 PCs and 200 Laptops for our network
model. The physical setup of such a network would have cost us about $1,11,220 or
Rs 17194550 approximately.
Table 1 shows the cost breakdown of whole project.

Device Quantity Cost ($) Cost (Rs)

Router 10 1,600 2,47,360
Switch 30 7,320 1,131,672
PC 300 (almost) 46,500 7,188,900
Laptop 200 (almost) 55,800 8,626,680
Total = 1,11,220 Total = 17,194,550

Table 2 shows price of a single unit in Dollars ($) and Rupees (Rs).

Device Name Model Cost ($) Cost (Rs)

Router 2621XM 160 24,736
Switch 2950-24 244 37,722
PC Pentium-4 155 23,962
Laptop HP x360 310-G2 279 43,133
